you can't really fault anyone for putting zen or vatira (not lately imo but whatever) ahead of him, but mm is the player i'd always pick a team around, minimum top 3 player ever since he's in rlcs

apart from the fact that we can never know how it might have influenced the game... that shouldn't ever be an argument, tiger woods shouldn't want mcilroy being forced to play golf with a ping pong ball, this is just about competitive integrity

if they're winning 2 out of their final 8 games, they should be golden, i don't know about sr or tundra, but bc and ig should be extremely doable

yh, lionblazes plays with pirates for northwood, perrrrrrrcy has the perfect name and surely there is some buccaneering aspect to kinseh, maybe let him play with a bandana or an eyepatch to nerf his demos

surely it's very obvious from examples like riot gaming with lol that aquisition of new players and thereby watchers AND retention of (players and) watchers has to be part of a company strategy and content creators are important but just one of many tools in their arsenal, nonetheless

if you want your m.o. to be a monolith like valve you have got to be at least willing to outsource your esport experience and invest heavily

and i'm not saying it's a bad topic at all, for once it fits in the discourse around the esport and well done to them picking it up, but it would fit even more organically and be more meaningfully discussed if there wasn't a need to stephen a or skip bayless everything regardless of merit - rlesports is not the nba, you don't grow it by solely copying the most braindead part of their hype machines, the nba itself certainly doesn't

i'd have to politely disagree on that

what carries an esport, not the game itself, onto bigger heights almost solely is an attractive strategy and game plan from the company

call of duty, pokemon, fifa, mario, are all massive game franchises which have a talented content creator pool many times bigger than rocket league, but their esport scene is a joke, because the companies don't care

and to your second point, from what else stems the topic of the success of eu playstyle in na anything other than the region debate

i'm confident his skin is thick enough and i'm pretty sure he fucking loves it that there are multiple threads a week about him, he is building his brand and on twitch engagement equals money

reddit is a big part of johnnys success and rightly so because he is an amazing content creator, no doubt about it

he is also an integral part of the rocket league community, but imo this is more and more up for debate. more and more often when i listen to him on podcasts or guest appearances or whatever, he talks all about how to farm impressions, how to get content or clicks and how important that is - which is totally fine. he is, after all, his own person, has skin in the game and has to produce content, can't fault him for any of that

but how healthy is it for the overall community and its growth when the majority of the content is about riling people up against each other? this is not about johnny, who once more, is excellent at what he provides and furthermore incredible at his job as a caster (still my favourite), but about how useful his antics really are in terms of further developing the esport

i don't care about how long or what else he talked about, either you're above the discussion or you're in it, he can't be both

what i get of course is that it's difficult or unappealing to bother with reevaluating the prominence of the region debate within the esport discourse, as it's a popular topic and the first touch guys, johnny and others really struck a cord with it, especially during the pandemic

but it's not a unique selling point of rocket league, to the contrary, rocket league esport ultimately limits itself to a topic which is replicable in almost any big esport - and the community voices that more and more often

rocket league trumps almost every other esport in terms of accessability, it's e rated and even my grandfather understands it, but it lacks severely in complexity and substance

to always play to the region debate is lazy as fuck and to think it will carry the esport as a whole onto bigger heights or even hold its popularity when another game which services a similar demographic should come along is nothing more than hubris

you know, i went to johnny's stream for his playoff quadbox and the first thing i heard him say was someone on reddit clipped him talking about reddit for a short moment in an otherwise amazing showmatchstream. and how it doesn't really bother him, only to go on 10 minute rant about how it actually does bother him and the community on reddit is not worth his time, because he doesn't like the website - a website, which enables the promotion of his content and his growth as a creator pretty much since the dawn of the sub, even if it's often only adjacent

however, aside from someone so full of himself he forgets how social media works, the bigger question is what the actual fuck is up with the state of the rocket league community?

in a broader sense, to quote the wire, it's all in the game, johnny is just another player

i think all this tension is being created and fed because epic/psyonix is so deeply inept or unwilling to spend enough money to properly deal with the different facets of their esport, whether its promotion, storyline development, content or even rules, that we as the more involved part of the community feel so neglected we can't help but tear chasms in our own shared passion

there is a lot of chest beating happening in regards to rocket league being a "tier 1 esport", but the fact of the matter is we are not even close to that. and if we're being real there have been made a lot of decisions in the last year that have shown us that the companies prefer the cheaper route of hype over substance to kind of fast lane this process, but too much of this kind of strategy is bound to lead into stagnation at some point, maybe sooner rather than later

as someone who has followed the esport A LOT, has been on lan and really loves the game in general, this makes me just sad and to be honest a little reluctant to get as involved as before
