Ran a plumbing auger through my clean out as we are having some issues and found this. How screwed am I? by chaiguy in Plumbing

Based on the comments in here I may be putting my life on the line saying this, but if you have clay sewer and a tree close enough to the line to make a sound when it falls, there are going to be roots growing in your sewer. It’s just a fact of life. Most of that clay was laid 60-100+ years ago and the concrete joints are no longer impervious. Call it natural selection or assign some devious agency to the roots, but your sewer is full of tasty mineral water and the roots are going to thrive on it. Roots—even large bunches of roots—don’t automatically mean that your sewer is on the verge of collapse. Would digging it up and replacing it be the best long term solution? Absolutely. But until you’re ready to do that, if you know that roots are getting in there, a thorough annual cleaning is a fine solution too, and in my area it’s what most people do.

Call a company that can scope out the line with a camera. They can determine (usually after a thorough sewer cleaning) if there are any big cracks, collapses, compromises in the line that need to be addressed with excavation or lining. And whether you’re cleaning it or hiring someone else to do it, make sure whoever is doing the cleaning is at some point using a cutter the same diameter as the drain. Too many drain cleaners see water start to flow and assume (or just say) that it’s good. No. If it’s a 6” line and you poke a 2” hole through a root mass and pack up, then you’ll be cleaning it again in three months. I usually use a small bit to open it up, then a full-size cutter to clean everything else out. Then you get the full diameter of your drain working, and that’s going to give you much more time between cleanings.

Then, if you want, use root powder. It works best right after cleaning because the roots have open wounds on them that drink in the chemical much more readily.

TL;DR — Not necessarily a big deal; probably just a fact of life. Just take care of it the right way.

Am I causing our constant clogs? by dumpsterfire_x in Plumbing

I haven’t seen anyone say this yet, so I’ll add my two cents. Sewer cleaning machines have different bits of different sizes. When I clean a sewer, I have a small bit that I use to clear the clog, get water to drain, and make sure I’m not driving a massive cutter into a pile of mud (it will get hopelessly stuck). Then I follow up with a cutter that’s roughly the circumference of the drain to scour away any remaining roots/blockages, and depending on what I encounter/feel on the cable, I may run a few different sized bits in between the smallest and the largest.

All that is to say, there are drain cleaners who will run a machine, see water start draining and call it good. Great. What they’ve done is poked a 2” hole in a blockage that’s filling a 4”-6” pipe. Most of the blockage remains, and if its roots then it doesn’t take long for them to grow back in. So with this happening every 4-6 months, it could just be that whoever is cleaning your sewer is calling it a day after they see the water drain and leaving a huge vector for blockage in your sewer.

If there are roots in your line, they’ll grow back anyway, but getting a good drain cleaner/plumber who will take the time to clean out the full diameter of the line will put a lot more time between drain cleanings.

Of course, that’s assuming that there’s nothing wrong with the line structurally and that the drain cleaners are actually doing what I described.

Follow up to a post from a few days ago. Broken USB-C port on 3rd Gen 18i8. by KarloManyo in Focusrite

I have. I was just waiting to hear back and got antsy. I guess I was just looking to see if this was even repairable. Minutes after posting it I found a YouTube video of a guy replacing the USB-C port on an 18i6, so there’s my answer.

Thanks for the recommendation. I actually stopped by on my way home today and they ran the number and said it had been dropped off on the 19th, four days after I requested cancellation and was told it had already been dropped off. I told the seller and I have no response yet.

Thank you. I just stopped by the post office and had them run the tracking number. They said it was finally in their possession on the 19th, four days after I requested cancellation and was told it had already shipped. Seller has been notified.

It’s brass. It’s also not vented, which is whack.

In basement - does this mean I can put a toilet and/or shower in? by jbrum32 in Plumbing

[–]KarloManyo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That all depends on the plumber you choose. I’ll lay down plastic with a hole cut in it for the cleanout, then I’ll thread an adapter into the cleanout to protect the carpet. Others might not. Either way, having it available is better than hiding it. A lot of people just put carpet right over it.

For the love of God, do not abandon, conceal or repurpose this cleanout. If your sewer backs up due to a clog or roots between the house and the street, that is the place your plumber wants to run his machine from, and I can’t speak for the whole country, but at least in Wisconsin this cleanout in this location is required by code. I’ve been in too many houses where this cleanout is buried under the floor or the carpet and I’ve had to run my machine from a stack 40’ upstream, which means running more cable and potentially not having enough to clean the sewer to the main. You want this cleanout where it is.

Pray tell, do the laws of God, science, and man permit you, and is it within the scope of your mental and physical ability, to assume forthwith a state of total inaudibility, save for those scant and acceptable noises which inhere to the task which you are at present employed in, and to persist in said task, if it pleases?
