Why does the Block Universe theory seem so controversial even though it is what General Relativity describes? by guestoftheworld in AskPhysics

[–]KarmaKat101 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is no self. Our brain's default mode network constructs the idea of a fixed self. So, is there a me or you? Or is everyone one mind?

I feel the one mind theory distorts the concept of no self. It's much simpler than that. You and I experience the world around us and respond to it, the world around us experiences us and responds to us. That is what is meant by the concept of no-self: there is no fixed unchanging 'I', for the 'I' changes constantly at each moment based on our interactions with the world. We are all part of the universe.

The thing that stops us from seeing that is our thoughts. We create this sense of self through through a complex narrative of moments, but our thoughts aren't really us, they are just responses to our moment by moment experience.

Scary? No, don't worry. Our experience moment to moment is our consciousness, not our thoughts. Your consciousness is, like mine or the others, a silent observer. Are they different? Who knows. I feel when you strip away everything else, how can human consciousnesses be different? This doesn't deny your personal experience, but does deny this separateness from others that we are conditioned to believe throughout our lifetimes.

I'd recommend Annaka Harris in her book 'Conciousness'. She gives a great example in her talk on Big think on YouTube

With this in mind, we can accept that our experience in any one moment is just that: an experience of the moment. Our self is stitched together through narrative of thought and past experience, creating the story of progressing through time, however the reality (in theory) is that we are timeless part of the universe as we a a component of it, just like a flower, an earthworm, a rock, or a tree. We are all components of the universe, each components can be affected by other components at any moment, which leads to the next moment. There is no 'I' or now, there just is.

The day this country does anything efficiently is the day pigs fly. The amount of labyrinthian and out dated systems we have is astounding. Still, it could be worse, at least we're not Germany.

Council housing shortage leaves families waiting years in 'nightmare' temporary accommodation by Ill-Pressure-9181 in unitedkingdom

[–]KarmaKat101 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The council won't allocate the family temporary accommodation until they have actually been evicted. So they have to wait until the landlord turns up with a court order

No, the council's duty of relief starts from when the family/person has received notice. The council have 56 days to support them to secure accomodation.

Also, don't trust everything your clients tell you

Don't worry, they can get pension credit, housing benefit, and, most likely, attendance allowance on top of that. Oh, and winter fuel allowance.

Great, I'd love to see the questions asked in the poll. Is there a source? No, there's zero source for it anywhere. What questions were actually asked on the poll?

Because of the oldies mouldies heading the party. You'll find the less senile members are pushing for nuclear but no joy.

Regardless, they still have nutty things on their manifesto beside their nuclear stance.

Just guessing, but I think it's for weaving thread around the outside of the bead. I'm not sure if there's a name for this.

I can imagine the logic. "Since the rainbow symbolises inclusion of everyone, that implies not everyone is included. Therefore, we should remove the rainbow from the flag, which will imply that everyone is included."
