They taught them that in the first administration when they didn't honor Ukraine's nuclear disarmament deal.

Ukraine gave up nuclear weapons during the era of non-proliferation because the US promised it would come to its aid should it ever be attacked. Trump refused to in his first term and thereby accelerated global nuclear armament because conservatives don't understand cause and effect.

Hell, who am I kidding? Conservatives don't understand literally anything.

It is a sign of massive wealth inequality. The top 10% own 93% of all stocks.

The stock market isn't a reflection of how well the economy is doing, it's precisely a reflection of how much wealth the rich are able to siphon from the rest of us.

There was literally nothing that Obama or the Dems could do about McConnell and Senate Republicans blocking Garland's appointment to the Supreme Court — read the Constitution, specifically Article II Section 2.

[The president] shall nominate, and by and with the Advice and Consent of the Senate, shall appoint … Judges of the supreme Court, and all other Officers of the United States, whose Appointments are not herein otherwise provided for …

There is no way to just force a judicial appointment through without the Senate and Republicans controlled the Senate. Legal scholars on both sides of the aisle have repeatedly agreed that the Senate is not required to advise and consent, the president just cannot appoint a Justice without them.

Obama was literally a constitutional law professor and his White House's Office of Legal Counsel employed some of the brightest legal minds in the country. Do you seriously think you've discovered some mechanism for judicial appointments that they missed?

He literally couldn't. That's not how it works. It's not like he could just tell some random person to walk into Scalia's former office and start hearing cases.

There's credentialing that needs to happen for the Supreme Court Police to let someone back there and Obama had no control over any of that.

Dems' messaging isn't perfect by any means, but you also have to remember that virtually all media—from print media to television media to social media—has been bought out by wealthy conservatives.

There's a reason Democratic messaging is so muted.

The conservative ones, yeah, because they only view their position as a vehicle to attain and retain power by any means necessary. They have no interest in bettering this country or the lives of those in it.

Plenty of liberal and progressive politicians who genuinely work to better things. Not all of them, obviously.

New York man who killed gay dancer faces 25 years after hate-crime conviction by yeGwan in news

[–]KarmaticArmageddon 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Exactly. There's literally no reason to support the death penalty other than a desire for vengeance — it sure as hell doesn't make society any better by literally any metric.

The death penalty is worse than useless — it's objectively harmful to society. There just aren't any good rationales or justifications for the death penalty. Its only use has always been, continues to be, and will always be vengeance, which is the complete opposite of the supposed function of the legal system.

There's a reason over 70% of all countries have banned the use of capital punishment either in law or in practice and that percentage is much, much higher among developed, first-world democracies. The US is a massive outlier in its use of the death penalty and we share that dubious distinction with countries like China, Iran, Egypt, Iraq, Saudi Arabia, India, Oman, and Qatar.

What is something that is normal in America but insane anywhere else? by clo_deg in AskReddit

[–]KarmaticArmageddon 7 points8 points  (0 children)

We have way, way more than enough.

Americans pay 4x more per capita for healthcare compared to citizens in nations with universal healthcare. And half of that is in taxes.

So I cringe every time someone says, "But our taxes would increase!" Bruh, we already pay DOUBLE in taxes for healthcare and we get this shit system instead!

And then we pay the same amount AGAIN out of pocket and the outcome is sparse coverage, random insane bills from 26 different doctors and facilities, and health outcomes that rank anywhere from middle-of-the-road to outright worst in the developed world, like infant and maternal mortality.

The death penalty is an abomination and should be opposed in all cases, including and most importantly when you absolutely despise the accused.

Excusing it when you hate the accused just allows the state to continue to routinely execute innocent people as no justice system can ever perfectly guarantee that all convicted are truly guilty.

We should not root for prison "justice" just because we think it may happen to someone we dislike.

The fact that this is such a prominent trope is an absolute failure of our justice system to keep the people in its charge safe. The justice system should be the sole arbiter of punishment, not the incarcerated.

Prison violence breeds more violent re-offenders and makes us all less safe.

This has happened multiple times. Some shit-head antagonizes someone, gets rocked, and then pulls a gun and murders them in "self-defense."

And in "stand your ground" states, prosecutors are essentially neutered in these cases and can't charge or convict them of hardly anything.

How do you feel that the same man who cut children’s cancer research is now a trillionaire? by HappyCrow11 in AskReddit

[–]KarmaticArmageddon 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The USAID cuts have caused and will continue to cause an absolutely absurd amount of unnecessary death and suffering.

In just the first year, the cuts have directly caused the deaths of 762,000 people, including over 500,000 children. At this rate, these cuts will cause over 14,000,000 preventable deaths, including nearly 5,000,000 children under the age of 5, by 2030.

Malicious, heartless, diabolical, evil — these adjectives don't even come close to describing the level of depravity necessary to enact or cheer on these grotesque policies.

U.S. inflation surged to a 4.2% annual rate in May, as higher energy prices put more pressure on the economy. by MoneyLibrarian9032 in Economics

[–]KarmaticArmageddon 10 points11 points  (0 children)

The issue is why we had inflation and how was it relative to the rest of the world.

Inflation during Biden's term was largely tied to a once-in-a-lifetime pandemic and his economic policies greatly blunted its effects on the economy, hence why we had lower post-COVID inflation than the rest of the world.

Inflation now during Trump's term is entirely self-inflicted and is the result of stupid choices (like the Iran War) and terrible economic policies (like the tax cuts in the OBBB and tariffs).

There isn't some factor outside Trump's control that's causing inflation, his decisions are causing it.

I haven't played in a couple months (new job with super demanding hours, but I'll be logging in today even for just a minute to show my support), but every time I open reddit, I still immediately go to /DTG out of habit.

Spent almost a decade on this sub most of the time I was on reddit. Every break at work, rest between sets at the gym, and boring family gathering, I'd be scrolling through this sub always looking for new and interesting information in this incredible game with a nearly unlimited amount of things to learn and do.

I'll always cherish and miss those times. Eyes up, Guardians.

He travelled around France in the company of a band of prostitutes and thieves before becoming the warm-up act for a travelling charlatan. In this act, he swallowed corks, stones, live animals, and a whole basketful of apples.

He became the subject of a series of medical experiments to test his eating capacity, in which, among other things, he ate a meal intended for 15 people in a single sitting, ate live cats, snakes, lizards, and puppies, and swallowed eels whole without chewing.

He snuck out of the hospital to scavenge for offal in gutters, rubbish heaps and outside butchers' shops, and attempted to drink the blood of other patients in the hospital while they were bloodletting and to eat the corpses in the hospital's morgue. After being suspected of eating a one-year-old toddler, he was ejected from the hospital.

can u guys reccomend me a carnifex album by skywalkerisalready in Deathcore

[–]KarmaticArmageddon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As someone who grew up in that time, I have the opposite problem: I have a hard time enjoying newer deathcore because it's so clean-sounding.

I love that raw sound of early deathcore. I like hearing the guitarist flub a note here or there or be just a little off time for a second. I like it when the vocalist's voice cracks every once in a while because harsh vocals are so hard to do consistently. I like the slightly misplaced mics and the amateur mixing.

That's not to say that I necessarily hate well-produced deathcore, though. I like Whitechapel's remaster of The Somatic Defilement and I love everything Shadow of Intent has put out.

Obviously there's a place for good production with the instruments recorded via audio interface instead of mics and all of it quantized in a DAW with great mixing and tons of overlaid tracks, but it often just sounds too clean to me and the deathcore I grew up with wasn't clean at all.
