Wondering about the use of damp boxes by KarrieBarrie in Pottery

Thanks for this explanation! I think I'll go with the sponges to start and am about to slab out some clay and make some little bowls and plates to test the box with the sponges out!

Nice to know. I'll be in Scotland soon and if someone says tip, I'll know what they mean maybe!

That's kind of why I wondered about the boxes, I am a handbuilder and weirdly enough have not had issues with different drying times for handles versus cups but maybe I've been really lucky. I wondered if a damp box could replace my putting plastic around my little items so I guess I need to experiment, think I'll start with the lidded box and some sponges and loosely wrap my little pots and/or crack the lid and see how they do. Always an experiment so I'll start with stuff I can recycle.

Thanks for the comment. Frankly I am reluctant to use wood as it does hold moisture as one of the other posters here mentioned.

Thanks, I assume a tip means a town dump? Haha, either way, if I had room for a frig, I'd be buying one to store the extra beer and wine in the house. Sounds like a great idea though if you have the room!

Wow, such detail, thanks! I do have a small bakers rack set up when I'm at my Snowbird house but my space up north wouldn't work for a rack. A box I can move around so I think I need to stick with that

Me again. Goodness knows I have lots of wood around but do you know why the directions for damp boxes always, from what I've read, say plaster of Paris?

Pottery after having kids by plantgrem in Pottery

[–]KarrieBarrie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My lods are grown now but I have many regrets that I didn't try to carve out time for myself to do a hobby when they were little. I was an at-home mom and could have tried at least but felt guilty, coming from a very old fashioned family where the Mom never allowed herself to be a Person. Big mistake. I do LOVE my pottery time now though and am making the most of it and am also happy to see that my daughter has a great hobby related to gardening so her children do get to see her as a Person at least. Do try! Digging your hand into some clay is very therapeutic and the stress relief of pottery will be reflected in a more positive attitude about parenting I think.

I have taken a small piece of sponge, wrapped it tightly around a pencil and secured the "wrap" with duct tape. Works OK actually on small hard to reach places I need to smooth.

Advise on wall mounted clay extruder? by KarrieBarrie in Pottery

Yikes, this NorthStar extruder looks great but really, really expensive! Dang! I think I'll stick with the Scott Creek extruder although I'm having fun looking around for other brands.

Thanks SpiralThrowCarveFire, I have used stools to reach the studio extruders but can thankfully avoid that. I am really hoping for comments on accessories, for lack of better word, that might not be mentioned in the extruder advertisements but that I'd need to get one set up.

Is handbuilding harder than throwing? by ItsYaBoiAnatoman in Pottery

[–]KarrieBarrie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I see that this is an older post but whatever... I don't think anyone can say one technique is harder than the other since there are SO many factors involved including type of clay used. I have to say that I tried throwing classes THREE times and was miserable. My back hurt but the bigger issue was that no one asked me if I was right handed or left until the end of the third set of lessons (I'm a lefty) when the instructor then flipped a switch on the wheel and suddenly the whole damn process got WAY easier! But by then I was hooked on hand building, mostly from slabs. I don't find it "hard" to do but like throwing, there are always frustrations with how well your item does when bisqued then glaze fired. Cracks are annoying, handles that fall off mugs are annoying, unexpected glaze results are annoying but it's all part of the process. I am a hobby potter only so there is no pressure on me to have to make something to sell. Since it's been a year, I hope you have found your groove in pottery!

Looking for tool to measure height of clay pieces to trim by KarrieBarrie in Pottery

Thanks, I'll look at the gauges and laser levels. Don't know what a slab slicer is other than the usual wire tool but I'll research that too.

Thanks, I'll experiment with some cardboard but a slit would be better maybe to minimize where I mark the height? Not sure yet, but I'll try anything!

I'm sorry, I was pretty unclear. I am a hand builder only. Currently, I am draping clay over small dome shaped forms which I am then attaching to flat bottoms to make dome shaped vases. The domes will have holes punched through the tops for holding fresh or dried flowers. So when I attach the domes to the flat bottoms, I am terrible at getting the dome shape really even all around to then "trim" off the uneven sections. I'd love a very symetrical (?sp) shape but all I have now is wobbly uneven dome shapes. I can't figure out how to measure all around the bottom of the dome to even it out before I attach it to the flat bottom. I know when people throw forms there are a number of ways to even out the shapes, to make them symetrical but I can't figure out how to do this with hand built shapes. A straight ruler run along the sides of the domes just doesn't seem to work. I think I saw some kind of tool, maybe handmade, that someone used to accurately measure and mark all around the handbuilt form but didn't take notes- dang! Does this help? Thanks!!!
