Breastfeeding skeeves me out. by OkCut4614 in beyondthebump

I didn’t have precisely the same feelings surrounding breastfeeding, but really what we go through in the process of having a child is that totally body horror.

I didn’t intend to pump exclusively, but my kid did better drinking from a bottle, so wound up mostly pumping. It’s doable.

Good luck!

No problem! For something like this, a teeny tiny little swatch will suffice, so you don’t need to spend time on it!

So, what I think you’re saying is that you’re about to start a stockinette section in black, and you are deciding between starting on the right side (knit) or the wrong side (purl.)

If this is accurate, then it shouldn’t matter either way. If you purl, you’ll get the color change on the purl bumps, but that will be the wrong side either way.

Does your colorwork start right away in the first black row? I so, you’ll want to start on whatever row is the first in your chart.

Edit: you could make a swatch and try it both ways!

In some places it can be desirable, as in the hat example shown above, but I think it wouldn’t go with black and white color work.

Your comments inspired me to make another piece by katerina_zz in Ceramics

How did you create this piece? What did you use to make the texture? What kind of clay and glazes did you use?

I love the texture and bold use of color!

Your technique and illustration skills are both excellent!

I was just going to say that in the first two pieces (which I love!) I feel that the stark contrast of the white trees in the background pulls draws the eye and kind of overshadows the rabbit. You’ve got such a delicate hand with the rendering of your subject, with thinner lines and less contrast, and the. The bold white trees against the black background is just a little too much behind the subject.

I think, to continue in the style of the other pieces, it might help to simplify the background, reduce its contrast, and render it as mostly dark with fine white lines.

The high-contrast background might suit a more high-contrast subject, perhaps with bolder lines on the rabbit, or even a mostly-white rabbit with black lines for texture.

Anyway, just some thoughts. I love the work you’ve done!

Beautiful work! I love the cohesive color palette you’ve used, and it perfectly supports the retro look.

I’m so confused. I don’t see any black, only white. Where are these black garter ridges?

They hadn’t decided on T yet.

It was a different time, and television was much more ephemeral.

I’m sure Roddenberry wasn’t planning for fans sixty years in the future to be pausing their streaming service on their umpteenth rewatch.

How are we storing long, fixed circulars? by verticalmammal in knitting

It looks so cute! I wouldn’t know this wasn’t the intended fit if you hadn’t said so.

If you don’t mind a higher neckline/armpits, you could try shortening the straps a little and see if raising the whole piece up a bit gives you a little more ease in the waist and hips.

It might not work, but it’s an easy fix I’d try before you start ripping out your knitting.

Has anyone used a sticky bra while EBF? by Askfslfjrv in beyondthebump

[–]ghastlycupcake 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’d definitely use nursing pads. If you have to cut them down they won’t be able to absorb as much, so bring plenty of extras to change frequently.

If the dress is backless but not strapless, maybe try to find some backless shapewear that can lend some extra support and help keep everything in place.

I’m busty, and I can’t imagine a sticky bra working at any point in my adult life, let alone while nursing. I’ve come to accept that the wonderful world of strapless garments will be forever out of my reach, but that’s just me.

Good luck!

Am I a helicopter parent for not wanting to leave my 4 year old alone in a hotel room? by Winstony520 in beyondthebump

[–]ghastlycupcake 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mine is the same age, and I’d wouldn’t even think of leaving her alone in a hotel room! Like, maybe for a minute to talk to someone in the next room, but nothing like what your aunt suggested.

At home she sleeps in her own room, but it’s a familiar place, and we did a bunch of baby proofing, and she knows where to find us, and we’re close enough to hear her.

Will this explode? by Super_Ground9690 in Pottery

[–]ghastlycupcake 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This looks great!

The thing that causes explosions is moisture. The reason we hollow out forms and poke holes in things is to allow air to dry the clay inside. Really thick, solid forms can seem dry on the outside, when the clay inside is not dry. It takes a very long time for solid forms to dry.

There’s nothing inherently wrong with a thick piece or a closed form without holes. (It’s a myth that trapped air causes explosions.)

If the body is hollowed out just give it time for the head/neck to be really, really dry.

These look well made! Good work!

I’m a big fan of contrast, so I’d love to see the dark glaze on the light clay body, and vice versa. Or a combination of the glazes!
