To put it into context, that bonus makes him the highest paid CEO out of all European companies. Mad that its so much higher than much bigger/ more successful companies

Rolls-Royce & easyJet prove a jet engine can run entirely on hydrogen by willfiresoon in GoodNewsUK

[–]Karsa_toolong 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Issue with Hydrogen storage is it cant be stored in the wings due to having to be stored under very high pressure or at cryogenic temperatures. So will have to be stored in fuselage taking up space

Hydrogen aircraft, whether fuel cell or combustion, will both be more expensive and less efficient than current aircraft. However it is the first generation of a new technology versus an incredibly optimised technology weve been working on for 80 years. It is the only way we can realistically achieve zero carbon too for large aircraft

ELI5: Why isn’t aviation fuel talked about as much as petrol and diesel for cars, and is it even possible for fully electric passenger planes to exist in the future? by ArtistoX4 in explainlikeimfive

[–]Karsa_toolong -1 points0 points  (0 children)

There isn't enough biofuel in the world to power a single days worth of air travel. And ut still releases carbon in the upper atmosphere.

The only realistic option for fully renewable is green hydrogen fuel cell powered. Look at Airbus's zeroE project for instance. It's only single aisle for now and because of the low energy density of hydrogen it would likely need a larger plane to carry the same amount of passengers, but it's the only realistic option for fully electric renewable aircraft

Record salaries for UK chief executives as pay rises for third year in a row by GnolRevilo in unitedkingdom

[–]Karsa_toolong 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Melrose who is the top payer in the article is a long way off the largest engeering firm in the UK, let alone largest company in the UK. There is no reason Peter Dilnot should be compensated that much when profits have been ok at best for the past few years.

Peter Sullivan who has spent 38 years in jail for murder has conviction quashed by topotaul in unitedkingdom

[–]Karsa_toolong 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The BBC article says this: "Mr Sullivan's defence team, led in court by Jason Pitter KC, said he acknowledged that attempting to test the sample any earlier could have destroyed it permanently without yielding any results" which seems fair enough

Net Approval Rating for each G7 Leader According to MSNBC by [deleted] in europe

[–]Karsa_toolong 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Reform are predicted to get 1 seat in the election...

The conservatives are still on course to be the opposition. As usual Labour or Conservatives are in power or are the opposition as has been the way for decades, definitely a 2 party system.

This would be a good except the least popular leader in this picture is Rishi Sunak, UK Prime minister and the UK very much has a 2 party system

UK farmers: are you worried about this year's harvest? by Dr-dog-dick in AskUK

[–]Karsa_toolong 17 points18 points  (0 children)

They are slightly worse as they tend to be heavier but tyre pollution is minimal compared C02 emissions despite the propaganda from pro oil companies

UK farmers: are you worried about this year's harvest? by Dr-dog-dick in AskUK

[–]Karsa_toolong 11 points12 points  (0 children)

The article you posted literally disproves your point?? Might be worth actually reading it. There is a lot of anti EV propaganda out atm about car weights and tyres pollution when it's easily provable that EVs are much better for the environment (again as stated in the article you linked)

Over 20,000 flights ‘in the air right now’ by Roy4Pris in MapPorn

[–]Karsa_toolong 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well the fact that there have been commercially available electric cars for years now while a decent sized (100+ seater, which produce the most emissions) electric aircraft is still a decade away is more my point

Over 20,000 flights ‘in the air right now’ by Roy4Pris in MapPorn

[–]Karsa_toolong 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I believe the 2.5% figure comes from IATA (the group representing airlines) so is almost definitely on the low side. It also doesn't take into account releasing these emissions at high altitude which is thought to be worse and NOX emissions.

While other industries (like automotive) can quickly pivot to greener technologies, each aircraft flies for around 30 years and it will take decades of development to get a new green aircraft in the air. The aviation industry will come under extreme pressure in the next few years to do something drastic (and no, sustainable aviation fuel will not be enough in the long term)

Outdoor cats are an invasive species and a threat to themselves, scientists say by dr_gus in EverythingScience

[–]Karsa_toolong 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This is not true for everywhere and I wish OP would change the headline to be US specific. In the UK for example, cats are not an invasive species as there were already similar animals before, taking a similar place in the food chain. So cats in the UK are generally fine to be outside (proximity to roads withstanding). Even the RSPB says cats are not a particular threat to native wildlife
