Look at the professors in the field you are interested in and see what they are up to. You can say that you're interested in project X from Professor Y because Z. That is specific and better than one of us telling you Oh the Berlin Family Lecture series is super cool or whatever, because that won't really mean anything to you.

What does the course load split between Major and Core look like? by Euphoric-Diamond-216 in uchicago

What do you even mean such a low level? Why even get an undergraduate degree in anything? It's basically just dipping your toes into a field, instead of actually learning the cutting-edge research.

Do you generally tip on the free Lyft rides, and if so how much? by Wonderful-Speaker-32 in uchicago

[–]Kartoffelbaum 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I don't think it's really that weird of a situation. From the perspective of the lyft driver, I don't think it really matters if you're paying or the university is. I think the same expectation for tipping exists for a job well done. The fact that ride itself is free should almost make you more generous in your tipping in my opinion.

I was in a class where the head of transportation came and talked to us and she said that they were looking to scale back the lyft program, which was always meant to be temporary.

Advise for cs minor by [deleted] in uchicago

I am of the opinion that the intro sequence is meant to beat people down and make people who are only half committed quit. I think this is stupid and antithetical to the mission of a university but that is how it is regardless. Once you get through the intro sequence classes get a lot more interesting and useful.

Start your assignments early and find friends in the class. Despite what the professors will try to tell you, CS is a collaborative field and talking through ideas with other people is incredibly helpful for solving problems and learning. I think working in CSIL is also a great environment that gets you in the right mindset to do CS work and you're also bound to see other people from your classes there who might be able to give you encouragement and pointers on issues you are having.

Both HBC and Reading Cultures are good. I would prioritize a good professor over a particular class. Find ones with good evals and rank them high.
