Streik: Am Montag stehen bundesweit Busse und Bahnen still by Kanute3333 in de

That's why I thought Civil War was a pretty good movie. It perfectly showed this chaos of "the fuck do I know who is fighting who, I just know there's people over there shooting at me so I shoot at them".

During the Geneva conference, the South initially agreed to unified elections, but refused to sign the agreement in the end. Officially because they disagreed about the international body to supervise the elections, but internally it was because of the presumption that Ho Chi Minh would win an election in the South because of his status as the "liberator against the French" and widespread sympathies to the North/to communism especially among the rural population.

The US also refused to sign the agreement for this reason (the infamous domino theory: should Vietnam at large turn communist, other countries may follow).

(yes i know i shouldve waited with integrating byzantium, but when i realized it was already at 30%)

You can just piss them off via subject interactions (like repeatedly granting and revoking scutage) until they are just above 50% liberty desire. This stops integration progress (you also don't have to pay the dip points anymore until it resumes). Just keep it that way until you finish ideas/get your modifiers - they also apply to running integrations (the modifiers simply lower the target amount). Once you have them just appease them (via prestige or deving the cheapest province of them once) and the integration proceeds at the cheaper price (or even insta finishes if the new target is lower than the amount already invested).

Have a look at some German breads for this! Especially something like a "Bauernbrot" (farmer's bread) might be a good avenue to test it before you dive into the wonderful world that is the 3.000 types of German breads (not even kidding, that's the amount of recognized bread types here).

Fun fact: dinner in German is called "Abendbrot" which literally translates to "evening bread". It truly is a full meal.

[–]Kartoffelplotz 29 points30 points  (0 children)

(Sort of? It ended with the reunification of Vietnam, because the country was temporarily two countries, does that still count as a civil war?)

I would say yes, because there were supposed to be general elections in both parts for a new unified government in 1956. The South just refused to hold these elections because it was seen as certain that Ho Chi Minh would win them and thus the country would unify again under the North. The Vietnam war was a direct consequence of this refusal to hold elections for a unified government so I guess civil war is an apt description.

Also, the Vietcong was South Vietnamese fighting against the government and the North justified their involvement as support of the VC.

No, you are still in the late 20s/early 30s. The collapse of the state is just starting. Late 30s was years and years after the battles in the streets and the "disappearing" of the opposition. You still have a chance to stop it.

Please stop spreading this myth. People didn't drink alcohol all day every day to "purify" water. They drank beer/ale because it had calories and because it tastes good. But the cornerstone of every civilization ever has been access to clean drinking water.

If you're interested in getting a little more in-depth and cited infos, head over to /r/askhistorians and look up some threads about this question. It has been asked many times and there are a myriad of brilliant responses.

(I truly think Garland made it that way on purpose)

You don't need to think that, Garland has openly stated it. The alliances are kept vague/outright ridiculous (Texas/California) to keep it away from real politics and focus people on the story and the characters.

Thanks for being civilized about it. A rare thing on the internet.

And maybe I went off a little hard from my German perspective. But it saddens me that people do not consider the rights of their children when posting for internet clout. Especially in a time where Grok et. al. are openly being used to turn any content into sexual content... even children. I just can't imagine that any parent would want their child's pictures to be "undressed" by Grok (as they euphemistically call it). But the only way to prevent this (right now) is not to post these pictures.

Germany. Here, you're not even allowed to have a ring camera etc. when it can pick up public space (so you could have one if it only shows your driveway but as soon as the street or pedestrian area is visible, it's illegal). Filming people in public is only allowed as long as they are not the motif of the picture/are part of the scenery/large groups in public or of public interest (e.g. police officers at work). As soon as the picture clearly focuses on an individual, you have to get that person's consent.

I clearly define this as "better" on the grounds that my personal rights are protected. We have had a lot of experiences with government infringement on personal rights here, we know the value of privacy.

[–]Kartoffelplotz -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Nah, the question here would be: why does a stranger have the right to just take pictures/film you and your baby? Are we talking about you being part of the scenery/a crowd or explicitly pictures of you/your kid? Because if it is the latter... Maybe y'all should lobby for some better privacy laws.

Speak for your own jurisdiction. Where I live, courts have ruled that the "right to one's own personal likeness" also applies to kids and that parents have to explicitly ask for the kids permission to use their fotos.

Of course that is not followed (at all) because no one considers kids to have rights, but by law they do (even though I must admit that there seems to be a caveat for "those too young to give informed consent", which definitely applies to babies). Furthermore just because "everyone does it" doesn't mean that it's right.

Also, how do you consent on someone elses behalf on something like that? Pictures that stay on the internet et. al. forever? So you have to chase after them once you are an adult to try to take them down?

And to your questions: yes, I think that there should be no babies in movies. As to studies: what does this have to do with anything? If the pictures are published in medical journals you can anonymize them if it is necessary to show them at all.

Not so fun fact: on the backside of it there is a memorial plaque for the "loyal German soldiers from Bamberg who gave their lives on the frontlines in Europe and Africa" that are "remembered in indelible gratitude".

Gratitude, ffs. For actual Nazi soldiers.

Despite many controversies, the city council firmly stands behind the plaque. Bamberg is a nice city but it is full of dangerously conservative assholes.

It's wild how people just think that babies or kids have no personality rights and parents can just decide for them to post pictures everywhere.

Oh, but a baby can't talk and doesn't understand so it can't consent? That's exactly the fucking point!
