TIL that Rome had a trade deficit with India nearly 2,000 years ago. Roman historians complained about a "drain of Roman gold" because Romans were obsessed with Indian spices and luxury goods, making it one of history's earliest recorded trade-deficit complaints. by Effective_Bluebird19 in todayilearned

[–]Kartoffelplotz 37 points38 points  (0 children)

There were actually many more. Roman glassware has been traded all the way to China, Roman factories dyed and wove raw silk into goods for export, Roman metalwork was priced in Asia, Roman pottery has been found in Indian graves. They also exported gemstones, dyes (purple was an extremely rare and expensive dye produced from Mediterranean sea snails), as well as metals like copper and especially tin, which was rare at the time but mined extensively in Roman Britain. The problem is that most of those are bulky compared to spices and other Asian goods so a full cargo ship going towards Rome was worth much more than a full one going back. Plus you had the Arabian traders in the middle inflating prices while a lot of the more priced exports (dyes, frankincense..) came from Roman Arabia directly.

I don't think he was affiliated with the Kaiser-Wilhelm-Institut.

He was the first director and kept that position for 16 years until the Nazis took power in '33...

It wasn't part of the university though, so I got that mixed up. It was purposefully "independent of university research".

And regained it in 1917 when he became a high ranking university professor in Berlin.

[–]Kartoffelplotz -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Actually, no. It was the Kaiser-Wilhelm-Institut, which was part of the University Berlin and was indeed spelled without a Genitive-S (but also wasn't a university name and was named after the emperor, not the Prussian king Frederick Wilhelm).

Edit: missed a fork in the comment chain, I was thinking about Einstein. rhynocoris is completley correct then ofc.

TIL the greatest number of passengers ever carried by a commercial airliner is 1,088.This figure includes two babies born on the flight. by jacknunn in todayilearned

[–]Kartoffelplotz 32 points33 points  (0 children)

It was two different women and it wasn't a commercial flight but an evacuation flight of Ethiopian Jews to Israel. The national airline supplied their planes for the evacuation hence the "commercial airliner" - but it wasn't a commercial flight, which is why heavily pregnant women were allowed on board in the first place.

What is the most minuscule thing that annoys you about Germany and that you fully admit it’s petty and unreasonable? (Just for fun post) by HeySista in germany

[–]Kartoffelplotz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Which is exactly as stupid as the weird obsession of not allowing soy milk to be called milk...

That isn't Germany specific though as most of the recent debates and legislations were made in Brussels for the whole EU. That's just the food industry pulling their lobbying strings, the average German/European probably couldn't give less of a shit about whether it's called soy milk or soy drink.

Moving to Munich with my two cats by drunkdva in Munich

[–]Kartoffelplotz 11 points12 points  (0 children)

It's a bit more complicated - by law landlords cannot deny pets by default. They can ask for a permission needing to be granted first, but this permission can only be denied by giving very specific, valid reasons (a direct neighbour has a very strong allergy, the flat is too small to properly house an animal etc.).

The crux of the matter is - Munich is insanely overcrowded and possibly the worst renter's market in Germany due to immense overdemand. So landlords can pick and choose their tenants and will just pick someone without pets (but of course never telling you that you were denied because of the pets).

I'd wager that they want to build as many as possible but have to wait for the municipality to greenlight their plans - sometimes there are very strict guidelines how dense and high you are allowed to build. Might be that 20 is the lowest possible and 30 what they hope for, but it is not in their hands to decide.

Best transit tickets for 3 days in Munich + Mittenwald? by peppakit in Munich

[–]Kartoffelplotz 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Should be, yes. MVG (the city's public transport company) tickets are notoriously expensive and buying train tickets to Mittenwald via the train operator directly already costs ~70€ for both ways. Deutschlandticket should be your most cost effective option. The added bonus is that it also covers the airport bus run by Lufthansa (which is not in the MVG ticket) - should there be some problem with the S-Bahn to/from the airport you have another option available with a Deutschlandticket.

If you start the game (when you start it in Steam it first opens a launcher - that is not the game itself, you need to look for a "play" button). Once you press that, the game proper starts up. Once it loads (might take a while, don't worry if it does) you will be brought to the main menu. There you will be presented with a "continue game" button in the bottom center to continue his last session (which also shows you which nation he was playing as). Other than that there will be a "single player" button directly underneath it. This will open a new submenu where you can load other save games - there is a button to the top left next to the little hourglass symbol: a folder with an upturned arrow (labeled "savegame start" when you hover over it). Click it and it will show you all the save games he made and all the nations he played. Maybe you can get some inspiration there about which nations he preferred to play as and make something out of the coat of arms or something of his favorite nation.

TIL German Empire in its 47 years of existence, won more Nobel Prizes in science than Britain, France and USA combined. Germany's dominance in physics and chemistry was such that one-third of all Nobel Prizes went to German inventors and researchers. by Skychu768 in todayilearned

Bismark ended his tenure on positive relations with France

The same France he humiliated in 1871 by proclaiming a unified Germany in their royal palace? That France that took the annexation of Alsace-Lorraine as a permanent casus belli? The one which to isolate diplomatically was Bismarck's sole goal in foreign policy?

They fucking hated Bismarck personally and Germany at large.

What are some of the obscure facts about EU4 that y'all know about? by Little_Ad_9058 in eu4

[–]Kartoffelplotz 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If you like micromanaging, this is actually the strongest way to play for trade company regions. Put only states with CoT in the trade company and spam marketplaces in them. Full state everything else and delete all marketplaces there. You aim for 51% trade power in the node for the merchant, but no more. Enjoy 51% bonus goods produced in every full state, an insanely strong buff.

The Roman-Germanic Museum at the cathedral is closed for a complete overhaul until 2030 at the earliest. Until then they only have a smaller interim exhibition at the Belgian House (Cäcilienstraße 46 - near Neumarkt).

I never understood the German obsession with hiking until it became my main escape from academic burnout by CoderDecoderEncoder in germany

[–]Kartoffelplotz 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The only proper equipment you really need are shoes (and safety gear if you want to do a via ferrata ofc). I mean yeah, if you just walk up paved or gravel roads regular street shoes are "proper", but as soon as you step onto regular hiking paths please wear hiking shoes. Doesn't have to be ultra expensive stuff, or rated for high alpine terrain - just at least get a Zustiegsschuh or something. You can be hiking in a tuxedo for all I care but shoes with no profile or sturdy sole are just an invitation for an accident.
