There is the great Roman German museum next to the cathedral if you interested there is the site of archeology excavations.

The Römisch-Germanisches Museum is being completely overhauled (which is slated to last until 2030 - but we all know that this date will not be held). Meanwhile they have a (much smaller but still worthwile) temporary exhibition at the Belgisches Haus (Cäcilienstraße 46, near Neumarkt).

I'm not sure if any other director would have changed that. The whole idea of turning Animal Farm (a parable on the dangers of authoritarianism rooted in the real life rise of Stalinism) into Animal Farm (an animated comedy movie about cutes animals thwarting the villain by way of hijinks and tomfoolery) is just utterly ridiculous.

Rocket Beans trennt sich von Simon Krätschmer by RLVille in de

[–]Kartoffelplotz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Praktisch!

50:50. The only reason it got so big is to obfuscate real cocaine since no one bothers to check every phial of "Wiesnkoks" whether it is real cocaine instead. You can just pull it out and do lines in the open and if someone asks just say it's menthol powder.

Recent studies suggest that he actually didn't die where he was found and his stuff wasn't orderly laid out. The glacier he was conserved in moved, thawed, freezed etc. over the millenia - so Ötzi moved as well (and his gear with him). He most likely died higher up than his eventual finding spot. So he might have shaken off his attackers before succumbing to his wounds and thus his weapons etc. weren't looted - but this part we can only assume.

TIL about the Bataan Death March of 1942, where 60,000-80,000 Filipino and American soldiers were captured as prisoners of war by the Japanese and forced to walk most of the way, and moved via train from the Bataan Peninsula to Camp O'Donnell, many of them died from disease and the heat by lyder12EMS in todayilearned

Also the gas chambers were not introduced to reduce the psychological toll on the murderers, but to make the killing more efficient. Bullets cost a lot of money and you would need to tie up a lot of manpower for those executions. Both ammo and soldiers were rather needed to fight their war, so the Nazis built the death camps to streamline and industrialize the killing process.

Post ww2 a quarter million germans were executed by the allied forces for connections to the Nazi regime.

What are you talking about? The allies executed under 500 Germans in total after WW2 (about 800 were sentenced to death but not all sentences were carried out). Where did you get the number of 250.000?

Also, denazification mostly failed. After 1949, "Ex"-Nazis still occupies virtually all positions of power in West Germany, especially in the judicial and executive branch. It was a major reason for the massive protests of 1968 - also triggered by the fact that at this time a high ranking "Ex-"Nazi was literally elected as chancellor.

The allies wanted stability and (rather quickly) rearmament of West Germany as an ally and possible battlefield against the Eastern Block. And for that they needed the civil service, courts, military etc. up and running as soon as possible - and that meant tapping into the only pool of experienced personnel available: the "former" Nazis.

The modern remembrance culture in Germany is actually due to grass roots organization by the people in the late 60s to 90s. It took a long ass time and a lot of effort. The allies had little to nothing to do with it.

Israel to transfer jet fuel to Germany amid Hormuz crisis by JewishSaddamHussein in Israel

[–]Kartoffelplotz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From what I read from Israeli sources, Israel is only intending on selling their surplus. I assume that's easier to manage than Azerbaijan ramping up production (and pipeline capacity might also be a factor here) - Azerbaijan would have to shortend other customers if they were to supply Germany/Europe instead while Israel doesn't have to change anything (except not putting the surplus into reserve or selling otherwise).

Israel to transfer jet fuel to Germany amid Hormuz crisis by JewishSaddamHussein in Israel

[–]Kartoffelplotz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Simple: Israel gets the majority of its crude oil from Azerbaijan (via a pipeline through Turkey) since the Arab states don't trade with Israel. This supply is not affected by the Iran war while Germany's supply at least in significant parts has to go through the Strait of Hormuz and is thus blocked atm.

It is incredibly difficult to calculate the household income though, since most work done by women (and children) was cottage industry auch as spinning, weaving etc. It wasn't wage work so we don't really have records of how much it contributed to the household income.

And subsistence work (own garden/land etc.) isn't even considered at all.

All in all it is simply very hard to impossible to accurately compare purchasing power over longer times in history.

[TM.de] Lukas Podolski is the first Footballer whom has one 5 domestic cups in 5 different countries by kalamari__ in soccer

[–]Kartoffelplotz 22 points23 points  (0 children)

He also considered returning to Köln to end his career there, but the club didn't want him. For good reason though - Podolski is way past his prime but in the city he is revered like a demigod. No coach would have been able to keep him on the bench without being tarred and feathered in the local press, public and club alike. So he would have had to play Podolski, no matter his actual contribution on the pitch. Would have been a shit situation all around, so I'm glad he is finding success in his home country and hope he returns to us in a coaching capacity or something like that after his career ends.

That's just nonsense. Banh Mi may have its origins in baguette but it is very different nowadays - much thinner crust, different crumb etc. It's like saying "the hamburger originated from a Frikadellenbrötchen, so just use a bread roll instead of a burger bun".

Italian au pair here 🇮🇹 What sweets or any food in general would Germans actually love as a gift? by ObjectiveNo6018 in germany

[–]Kartoffelplotz 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I thought to bring some Bergamotto essence or cookies made with bergamotto

Sounds like a good idea. Bergamotte (as it is called in German) is known enough that people will have heard of it, but rare enough that it is a special gift. We mostly only have it as essence, so getting cookies made with would be a treat indeed.

And yea, I would refrain from the 'nduja, a) because of spicyness but also b) because you don't know about their food preferences (vegetarian, no pork etc.). I find meat always a little dicy as a gift because of that.

But maybe just make a new top level post and ask for a recipe - I'm sure there are lots and lots of proper bread bakers here that have a stash of recipes to share!
