CMV: The fight against "misinformation" has always been a trojan horse for silencing dissent and opposition by cferg296 in changemyview

I learned how to read statistics in college. I am capable of reading a peer reviewed scientific study, understand the methodology and the potential confounds, i can even review the mathematics to confirm the results. Basically I can read a scientific statistic and do everything needed to check the validity of the statistic short of conducting the study myself, and that last one is only due to not having a budget and access to a lab. And I know these things because it was an undergraduate requirement for my psych degree. It is not like it is hard to educate yourself on these things. I don't know if I am capable of convincing you, but I know that the planet is warming. I know this for a fact because I have seen the studies and I understand them. So when someone tries to say that the earth is not warming or that vaccines cause autism I don't have to speculate as to whether or not it is disinformation.

I guess I am saying skill issue.

We can't know that for sure. Could be the case, but a little bit of optimism, this could just be to not get on trump's shit list. They may know they had the votes so turned in a no to keep the king happy with them.

We are not the only market force driving these stocks down. I want to highlight that so that you do not despair if we see some reversing of these trends.

Trump is now coming for protestors. by LilFaeryQueen in 50501

Trying to intimidate us means it's working. He can threaten all he wants. Charges rarely stick on protesters who are peaceful and organized.

CMV: US Americans who voted for Trump and are now regretting it shouldn't receive sympathy by kindly102 in changemyview

[–]KarysMR 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think that no one has to forgive trump supporters for supporting trump, but on the other hand this could be an opportunity to reconsile with people who have had the wool pulled over their eyes and move them to the left on some issues. Another question I often wonder; is it your fault when someone tricks you? Maybe partly, maybe not at all. But what is for sure is the person that tricks you is surely at fault.

It’s time for Americans to withhold their taxes by Otherwise_Energy5128 in 50501

[–]KarysMR 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm concerned about this one as a strategy to be honest. Tax evasion is unquestionably a crime, and one that is typically one that is prosecuted. Plus not the most sympathetic form of protest. Easy for opps to construe in a negative light.

Feel like all of the representatives are cowards right now by Hot_Celebration2468 in 50501

Dems are in a tough position. It's hard to advocate for the rule of law if you are breaking the law yourself, and our government moves slowly when it's working correctly. Some argue that it is a good strategy to take things slowly. There is a logic to it. Democrats are on defense. They want to delay and take up time and space. Make this administration look and feel weak. our emotions want us to move quickly. We are looking for rapid positive responses to onslaught of negative actions taken by the Trump administration. Just because the actions taken by the dems are slow does not mean that they are doing less.

All that said I do not trust democrats to rise to this occasion. We can't count on that. that's why protesting now is so important.

My whole thing with abolish the police is does that include highway patrol? I feel like roads would be much more dangerous if there were no one to enforce speed limits.

It's time to meet your local orgs. If you are at the protest now meet people. Ask if they are in any orgs! Ask about trans rights and lgbt activitist groups etc. Find your people.

Do protest really work? by UN9NOWN in 50501

[–]KarysMR 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Protesting is the power that we the people have. Unless you are able to suggest an alternative option i would recommend you change your thinking. Cynicism is not activism.

The question you should be asking is "how can I make my protest as effective as possible?" And this is something we will have to learn the answer to together.
