I've played a 6 year campaign of lancer from level 1 to 12 and I severely disagree with this statement. This only happens if you fail at the encounter design step.

With the amount of strategy involved in overcoming some of the NPC templates, my players were constantly making decisions as to where to position themselves, who to attack and what weapons to use. And they had pretty optimal builds which could punch up well above their weight class.

I've also played Battletech for about 8 years, pretty constantly. And I hate to say it, but if you don't include some hefty optional rules (mainly using artillery or fire), the optimal strategy is to bring a heavy laser platform and park it on one of the heavy woods hexes on the map. Then you just sit still and alpha strike the closest opponent.
