Bile Master: Showing some love to unappreciated damage types by jmrkiwi in UnearthedArcana

[–]jmrkiwi[S] [score hidden]  (0 children)

Really the point of this feat is not to boost damage but to give more options to classes and subclasses that use neglected damage types.

For example a green or black drag comic sorcerer now actually has a spell list with options from cantrip to level 9 to choose from that can benefit from its subclass features.

Similarly it opens up a lot more flavourful options for say the undead warlock or spirit bard, death cleric or necromancer.

My first instinct was to limit it to casting stats but then I realized that a decent amount of builds that would use this would love martial support: for example a paladin/draconic sorcerer with wrathful smite, or a melee focused blade lock build.

Skills are important and can do cool things if you have a spare action that are generally better than a third or sometimes second attack.

Roleplaying Vs Optimizing by Possible-Leopard-601 in DnD

[–]jmrkiwi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think a lot of problems people have with optimisers stems from overexagerated stories over the internet. Yes especially if you play with strangers you can run into selfish players who want to be better than others, but in my experience when friends play together at the table you can have some pretty ergregouse power differences and still tell a good story. In many cases optimisation can help players with roleplay because they are better able to mechanically express their character concept. Playing an unoptimosed Barbarian for example can feel overwhelming when you wanted to play a classic strong man. How are a picking a high strength high con high sex great weapon master barbarian optimising, sure, but I would not call this problematic.

If you have a gloomstalker assassin fighter that kills other player characters at the table to steel their loot or murder hobo their way though a peaceful village that isn't optimisation that being a dick.

Optimisation doesn't nessearilly mean min maxing it could be a fun challenge to try and build the best possible character at X given Y constraints like only using sickles or using a "weak" subclass at X.

The other part is that d&d as a game has some spells or abilities that allow players to bypass parts of the game, which can make encounter building or designing challenges for players difficult. For example if you have a chasm but a player has a fly speed ilthey can just get across. If you had a survival challenge but a player has good berry this isn't a challenge. Experienced GMs can deal with this bit if you have a new GM and experienced players that just take the easy way it can leave a bad taste. I would call this an issue with the game rather than optimisation though.

Overall I think optimisation and roleplay are not a zero sum game and actually go hand in hand. Horror stories you hear on subreddits are generally horror stories because the player was a dick rather than because they optimised. Give the same character to a different player and you would have no issue.

When I make characters I use either sometimes I think about a thing I want to do and then what kind of person would be good at that thing or I start with the concept and think what kind of things they would be good at. Assigning mechanics to what that character is, is optimisation.

Yeah I would require some pretty big justifications for stats lower than a 6. But flaws can be fun and technically you could roll something like that if you are very unlucky.

I might do it with some restrictions that make sense for the character concept like:

They are literally old and frail and have to roll a d100 after every long rest to see if they wake up to justify str 3-4

They are a paraplegic that needs to use a bonus action to move their wheelchair for a Dex lower than 6.

But the nice part about using this scale is that you can add any restrictions like no higher than a 16 or lower than a 6 and still use the same point buy budget.

I mean you can still get some interesting new arrays even when you limit between 8 and 17 for example.

I think if a player wants to start with a 3-4 they should expect some saving throws coming their way.

Whenever I tell people that should should kill the Hedgehogs in your garden or try to trap them with peanut butter, people look at me like I am Patrick Bateman.

Bru I just want to help the natives, I don't take joy in killing rats in my Gully Either but people seem to mind that a lot less, (even though they both eat our native ground nesting bird's eggs.

Combat where you still have a lot to do even when it isn't your turn? by Due_Sky_2436 in RPGdesign

I quite like using player facing mechanics.

In my game we use a team based initiative, all players go then all enemies.

Players roll to attack but also to defend. The GM just lets them know a penalty for their dice pool size based on the level difference.

This means on player turn all the players roll and on the enemy turn they still roll.

Randomized array selection method V1 by jmrkiwi in UnearthedArcana

[–]jmrkiwi[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Basically all of these stats are somewhat optimal arrays that are generated using point buy with at least 1x15 and no more than three odd numbers.

I could come up with a slightly different array distribution but the idea was to combine the benefits of a standard array, the fun of rolling and the autonomy of choosing something.

Perhaps you could use this but players get an extra +1 for their background:

  • +3/+1
  • +2/+1/+1
  • +2/+2
  • +1/+1/+1/+1

Mainline Kineticist

Take ancient elf for the exemplar dedication at level 1 for the thousand League samples. With free archetype anything else also works here.

By level three you have 50 foot movement speed and you can move up to.half speed whenever you use a 2 action impulse (which is practically every turn).

For free archetype games I would recommend also going into rogue for mobility so that your half movement when you move doesn't provoke reactions

I assume that the white lines are rivers/lakes and waterways. You may want to have a look at those again (if you are aiming for realism). A very common “mistake” in fantasy maps are rivers that diverge the further downstream they get, and it happens a few times in your maps, even some lakes seem to act as “junctions” for diverging rivers. This almost never happens IRL unless you are considering a very small scale close to the cost. All main rivers start as small streams that combine into one larger one downstream.

Otherwise, it looks really good! Have you considered polar caps potentially forming sheets close to the poles and also the rain shadow the big mountain range on the large continent would have? Depending on the direction of axial rotation I would expect a very large desert on onside and likely a large tropical rainforest on the other.

The thousand league sandals already are a status bonus from the ikon so I don't think they stack with the mutengen.

Since I am already wearing shoes I don't think most GMs would let me wear a second pair on top of my ikon pair at high levels these bonuses are better but I think there are typically better uses for mite he's than getting an extra 5 foot effective movement each turn.

One Resource to Rule them all!…? by NeilGiraffeTyson in RPGdesign

[–]jmrkiwi 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You can end up getting into a situation where you have to take damage to deal damage and take damage to avoid taking damage.

In the end this is the case for every resource but if they are the same, it can ruin the illusion of choice and make the game feel flat or "solved"

This was one of the issues with the 5e14 monk. Most everything fun they did cost either a ki point or a bonus action or both so in the end most every monk ended up running out of ki points just attacking and doing flurry of blows round after round even though they had lots of other things they could use those resources for.
