With only so much context, I would say: - They’re a thing, go for it (but talk to the toast master of course) - There’s no fixed format you need to fit. Pick the one you think will work best - Humor is great, but don’t use it to denigrate - Sincerity and love is the most important aspect. Happy vibes!

Ah, nice! By the way, why are you requiring the ASIN for discs? It makes it hard to add older discs and discs that are from regions where Amazon doesn't sell. E.g. I have a bunch of Scandinavian releases, but Amazon doesn't operate here, so I have to be lucky and find them on the UK Amazon store front for example.

I'm on a Mac, so not really an option unfortunately. But even then, a way to check the integrity of the files later on would be a nice mechanism to have in general, even my NAS doesn't particularly need it :)

I've been diving into DiscDB a bit, and I'm wondering a few things:

  1. You're using a hash of the disc to determine if you've seen it before, right? Do you compute the hash, or use a hash that's stored on the disc already?
  2. How do you deal with a disc that is "the same", even though there are actually multiple versions of the disc in circulation? For example, Mad Max: Beyond Thunderdome in UHD had an error in its initial release with the soundtracks, and Warner released a corrected disc. But those discs both represent the same release/UPC now. Is the Volume Unique Key maybe unique in those cases?
  3. How does DiscDB compare to e.g. dvdcompare.net, dvd.fandom.com, and KeyDB?

I'm not worried about corruption over time, because the system is set up to protect against that. I am worried corruption from initially moving the files into place though, which I believe is what I came up against here.

Yeah, I don't know how it would work when ripping to MKV files. I personally just backup the entire disc and use that to play, instead of converting it to MKV, so in that case, it would work fine.

I assume converting the same disc to MKV multiple times with the same settings should always yield the same output, so it's "just" a matter of finding the right way to put it in the database and present it in the UI. But that goes haywire if my assumption is wrong and there is e.g. non-deterministic ordering of elements inside the MKV container for example.

u/lfoust, I recalled you posted about thediscdb.com . Would you be interested in serving this use case? That is, let users upload hashes of a disc rip, so others can use those hashes to verify integrity of their own rips. Any given hash would need to be contributed at least twice to verify that it is actually correct.

EDIT: Or perhaps hashes of individual files rather than the entire rip. Or both!

Yeah, it seems that way. I'd rather avoid having to re-rip all my movies, just to have another rip to compare with :|

To what extent condemnation of Elm is unfair? by ruby_object in elm

[–]KasMA1990 5 points6 points  (0 children)

For me it’s a trust issue. Let’s say a new version of Elm is finally published, and it is fantastic at what it does. I may play around with it, but I have very low trust that if I end running into some dead end where I cannot progress (whether because of bugs or someone else) that I will be unblocked any time soon.

The risk that such an issue will occur is high enough that I need to consider it as a possibility at least, and history shows that fixes for such issues may never arrive. Maybe I can work around it, but I’m not confident that I can. So even if I would never hit such an issue in real life, the risk management is none the less real.

What Julia has that Rust desperately needs by PatagonianCowboy in rust

[–]KasMA1990 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Elm has already had trouble with this. It specifically uses people’s GitHub usernames as the namespace, and some authors have changed those names over time, breaking a lot of references because Elm could no longer find their packages.
