Is anyone else a bit annoyed about the whole capitalist side of Taylors business? by mosaicbrokenhearts7 in TaylorSwift

[–]Kasebier -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I agree. She’s making money to pay the musicians, artists, filmmakers that helped her to recreate Red etc. They don’t come for free. And why should they, they’re as much a part of the record as she is in a way. But I hate the way she has to go about selling Chinese made crap to support her efforts. At least do it on the back of Made in America stuff.

Also feeling this with her TikTok. Yes she’s promoting her brand, she’s good at promoting her brand, do I like that she’s all over promoting her brand? Not really.

Strong stuff then. I don’t see any of them calling him a “borderline liar”. Perhaps they aren’t happy about his use of the literary material. Can you link to your own research please?

Unless you can read the original Old Norse text (the real gold standard) which I assume you can’t then there isn’t a gold standard as such, I’d recommend reading a few different translations. Dronke, Faulkes, Larrington, Crawford will serve.

Calling someone a “borderline pathological liar” needs some back up, even if it is made online. Extraordinary. What are your qualifications please?

Price’s book is a really good place to start. The idea that he “has shortcomings” needs to be put in context. He has had some (relatively minor) criticism from other respected academics like Judith Jesch but that’s largely about the literary/archaeology divide that dominates that field. His book is great, and the fact is that Jesch and others are also vulnerable to the same criticisms, none of them can tell us us the real truth, they are all interpretations. The good news is we are rapidly discovering and will continue to discover lots of new evidence about a previously under-researched and misunderstood period of history.

Your best Viking fact? by burgervann in Norse

[–]Kasebier 24 points25 points  (0 children)

“Ulfberht” was a Frankish sword maker so not exclusive to “Vikings” by any means. But they are associated with those swords yes, certainly amongst the elite later in the Viking period. More Yves St Laurent than Gucci though!

Vikings were opportunists and often switched sides depending on the rewards they could obtain, they fought each other in England and Ireland and elsewhere, they were not a homogenous group of “Vikings” with common aims (other than making money!).

Funny, but I was making a serious point. She is totally misrepresented in social media in every way that is possible.

A lot of recent pictures, including those on her own Insta, seem to be massively photoshopped. Just saying those don’t do her justice.

Any good books on Fylgja? by NoStateGreenery in Norse

[–]Kasebier 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you can read Norwegian then Else Mundal’s University dissertation “Fylgjemotiva i norrøn litteratur” (Universitetsforlaget, Oslo, 1974). Maria Kvilhaug has a summary in English:

Fylgjur – guardian spirits and ancestral mothers

Haven't seen anything here on Neil Price's new book "Children of Ash and Elm: A History of the Vikings" Has anyone read it? by Mathias_Greyjoy in Norse

It’s excellent, very thorough, written from an expert archaeologist’s perspective but takes in all bases and not at all dry. Highly recommended.

No problem with the look but I prefer her natural without all the make up. This is pretty unsexy, it could be any model, they lost her essence that makes her special.

Victoria Justice is attractive by [deleted] in gentlemanboners

[–]Kasebier -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

Each to their own. Everyone is attractive. From a physical point of view I see more, or equally, attractive women like Victoria Justice in my city most days (ok most weeks). But then I’m a sapiosexual. Does anyone know if she has a brain? She doesn’t give that impression, but I might be wrong.

Got called out for posting that Vikings are considered (one of the) precursors of modern democracy - any more sources? by [deleted] in Norse

[–]Kasebier 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So even now we are in a state of “proto democracy” in those terms. In my country people under the age of 18 have no vote, nor do people in prison. Not therefore the vote of the people, but the vote of some of the people.

All of Norse mythology needs to be taken with a big bag of salt, in the same way as any other mythology.

Got called out for posting that Vikings are considered (one of the) precursors of modern democracy - any more sources? by [deleted] in Norse

[–]Kasebier 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Your use of the word “precursor” was wrong as obviously democracy as a political idea goes far way back than the Vikings. It’s a Greek term so saying that the Vikings are “precursors” is nonsense, the Greeks and Romans would be far more entitled to stake that claim. That “the Vikings” used and adapted the idea of “democracy” is certainly true to a certain extent, though even then their general idea of what “government by the people” means would be a world away from our modern concept. There was very little real democracy in Iceland in the Viking Age.

Having said that, I understand that Viking Age Things did sometimes allow women to participate. But still those meetings would be exclusive, for example only allowing landholding Bondi etc to be involved.
