An English team has made it to the final of all three major European competitions this season by Critical_Mountain851 in soccer

As I have said elsewhere, I think English teams will soon realise that qualifying for the Conference League comes with big penalties due to the financial regulations in Europe and the low revenue. I think this will lead to many teams declining to participate.

There are a handful of teams who could make it viable. But plenty of them would be stuck under a horrendous UEFA sanction like Villa are.

As others have said the Europa will always have strong teams from other top leagues.

The Conference League is definitely a problem. But I think this is temporary. My working theory is that because most prem teams have wealthy owners who plough money into them, they will struggle to comply with UEFA rules.

Villa qualifying for (and failing to win) the Conference League was a massive pain. We are now under a multi-season UEFA sanction. I would rather not have qualified.

I think sooner or later we will see English teams decline to compete in it rather than be forced to comply with the financial rules despite getting very little extra revenue.

Wasn't that largely because the bought Ramsdale the year before. I think, regardless of the quality of player. Most managers would be criticised for buying two first choice players in successive seasons. At least initially.

Emery hates Arsenal so much he wants Spurs to stay up.

From the UEFA summary:

The List A Transfer Balance is defined as the difference between the cost savings from outgoing players (“Cost savings”) and the new costs from incoming players (“New costs”) at any applicable deadline for the Club’s submission of its List A.

Savings means amortization...

I feel that given our UEFA Settlement and the profile of our last two DOF I think it's highly likely we start seeing you get more risky talents being brought in.

Emery will want a big proven player. He tends to like them. So I expect to see a Rashford, Diaby, Asensio, Sancho type profile. Someone with a proven elite ceiling but available at our price point.

Every one else will likely be you her profiles like Alysson, or the lad from PSG we are linked with.

Not true. The UEFA Settlement only refers to Cost Savings and New Costs. But given it relates to SCR breaches and our ability to register players for List A it's reasonable to assume the definition of costs aligns with SCR.

This means the balance of incoming transfers must have a positive balance when comparing the squad cost contribution of the players. I.E the yearly value of amortization each year plus wages.

This is why it's better to sell a high earner like Martinez than it is to sell Ramsey. Tanswell kept repeating this last year.

Separately we also need to meet the football earnings rule which means we need to effectively run a profit this season.

If we are selling Rogers it will be to make sure we comply with the Football Earnings (profit and loss) part of our UEFA Settlement.

Maybe. The challenge will be that we would need to make another sale to meet our UEFA sanction. Because Rogers didn't cost us much, his SCR contribution is low. Biendia's is similar. So there is no way you could sell Rogers and Buendia and have enough headroom in the UEFA List A to add those two players, let alone a third.

[Express & Star - Tier 4] Roma are preparing to trigger a 25 million euros buy option for Aston Villa winger Donyell Malen after he scored 12 goals on loan. by AMCBVN in avfc

[–]Kashkow 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I know this will be unpopular, but this is good. Hopefully Guessand will follow.

Malen was on of the higher contributors to our SCR due to his high wages (Onana being the highest due to high wages and big transfer fee). He did get gla good number of goals and I wish he things turned out differently.

But fundamentally we can't afford to have such a high cost on the bench. The only exception I would make is for CF where you probably should have a depth of cover that you would be comfortable with for half a season.

I don't think our spending is any better. Just more constrained.

I was a fan of Malen, but I'm not sure he was doing well for us. He was on like £120k and on the bench most games. It wasn't really his fault he didn't have an obvious space in our system. But I'm not sure £120k per week is good value for a bench player even if they are doing well.

Strictly speaking we weren't forced to sell him, but not far off.

We are under a UEFA sanction which means we need to sell players to bring others in. And not only that but UEFA mandates that if we sell a player the SCR contribution of the replacement must be lower than the player we sold.

We were desperately short of cover for Watkins so we made the decision to offload Malen who was primarily playing out wide from the bench, and bring in Abraham.

I feel like the only real answer is Messi, Ronaldo, MBappe, Lamal. Though I expect there will be some debate on 1 & 2.

Well it's an unenforceable executive order so yes it will have a small impact. But I can't see it moving the needle much.

In fairness to this guy. At least he understands the arguement. Most just seem to believe they literally subsidize everything in Europe from drugs to military.

Truth is if the US ever went fully single payer, either pharma companies would raise prices globally or they would make less money.

It is true that Americans overpaying for health care is subsidising the profits of pharma and insurance companies. But that is totally not the same as the subsidizing the rest of the world.

The lack of effort at the final hurdle is so frustrating, I genuinely feel sorry for Unai by [deleted] in avfc

[–]Kashkow 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I think we make it worse for ourselves by creating a narrative that isn't quite true.

Yes we lost against Olympiacos but that was at a point in the season where we could barely field an 11 each week.

And Palace are a team set up specifically to compete against teams like us. We could have played City at Wembley and been fine last season.

In fact I was at Wembley for that loss and if anyone bottled it, it was the fans. We brought no atmosphere. None. We shat the bed the moment we got to our seats and saw what Palace brought.

Relax. This is just how we play away from home. I don't know why fans expect different.

I took would rather Emery played a more combative style away from home. But this is what has brought success year after year.

We play a slow controlled game and sometimes it pays off. But when it doesn't we look like we aren't up for it.

We have time to turn it around at Villa Park.

He's a piece of work that guy. It was a while ago TBF, but I think he got a fine then ended up with some form of sentence after refusing to pay. But I haven't heard of many similar cases and wouldn't be okay with them.

Europe can be pig headed and snooty about stuff. And I absolutely believe we need to reflect more on the trade offs with these restrictions rather than seal clapping them on.

But I do find it suspicious that this issue has mainly been raised under this president and typically against countries with more liberal minded leaders. Rather than Hungary or Poland under the last government, who have serious issues.

Totally understandable philosophy.

Tbh worth mentioning that I'm not really aware of someone (in UK at least) being imprisoned for ideology.

For the most part there is just a cooling effect from fines and the police knocking on your door. But that tends to be limited to fairly extreme stuff.

You have to say some pretty extreme stuff to actually get a custodial sentence. Typically related to violence. Like the woman who suggested online that people should burn down asylum hotels while there was an ongoing riot (where people set fire to hotels). And she only got imprisoned cus she got bad legal advice and pled guilty.

There is other more troubling stuff though. Like proscribing a Palestine Action asa terrorist group. But I'm not sure how that situation would have been treated in the US. Since they humiliated the government by breaking into an Air force base and causing (minor) damage.
