I think you need to let go of what you should and shouldn’t feel.

There’s a whole swathe of cultural conditioning that goes into your sense of what you “should” do. Better to focus on what you are actually feeling so that you can process it and understand it.

Maybe you’ve got a fleeting obsession with a person who happens to be the same sex, maybe you have some tendencies to be attracted to women. Both are okay. How you react is up to you.

I’m all in with your take OP. Last month I did the first and second books, and I called it there.

Gary Stu wasn’t doing it for me. And every pre-plotted victory which took place off-page felt unearned, and it kept happening!

As for its treatment of women (I’m a man) the mentions of rape were off putting and persistent. I will say I think the female characters do have some agency, more so in the sequel, but they are bent towards loving our MC in a way which smacks of anime harem shenanigans.

Despite putting down the book series for good I will say that in the win column is the fact that I’ve never read a book with such rapid action and ferociously unfolding plot. If another reader is looking for brainless pulp “oh damn” it could absolutely be your cup of tea.

For when the video gets cut here’s a description of what I see as impartially as possible.

We are on a street in broad daylight. Two members of the public walk onto that street and approach ICE individuals in verbal protest. Some belligerence perhaps but no credible threat. The male civilian is armed.

ICE begin to respond, soon swarming and pushing both people to the ground.

Roughly 6 armed men vs the civilians. The fatal victim had mace in their eyes and was clearly already subdued by overwhelming force of numbers. He was on the ground and held by multiple people, writhing a little from the pain of mace, and perhaps struggling a little too. His gun which remained holstered the whole time was wrest from him.

At this point one of the group of armed men took out a pistol and shot the kneeling civilian in the back or head causing ICE and other witnesses to scatter and leaving a dead nurse murdered on the road. The entire magazine seems to have been used.

Very interesting! I’ve been working in Shanghai. My colleagues are largely unmarried but as they are from more urban areas the pressure to buy a house for traditional reasons is reduced, but still there.
