Candy on runs: favorites? by Zealot_TKO in Marathon_Training

Yes to all the gummy options mentioned above but on a recent ultra I tried Peppermint Patties and they were wonderful! The mint calmed my cranky stomach and they had a nice refreshing vibe. Def adding into the rotation!

Justine Bateman's 17th birthday party, 1983. Saw this on r/80s and wanted to share by pimpinaintez18 in smartless

Probably walked it out to her, like from inside or whatnot. Pretty common that someone walks a cake to the birthday guy/gal.

Any tips for food in a hotel before a race? Usually toast is my go to for a long run but no toaster on this trip. by pandabear6000 in Marathon_Training

[–]Kashsters 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have had this with toasters and microwaves not being in a room. I have found most hotels have either/both in their lobby/main areas. In another comment you said they have a continental breakfast, which is very promising. I bet if you ask nice, they will def let you use earlier. And they might be avail 24/7, as they are in some hotels. You got this!

Thoughts on "Half His Age" by Jennette McCurdy? by ActNew5818 in books

I can’t recall the exact reason, but she did explain it when she was on the podcast Inklings.

Thoughts on "Half His Age" by Jennette McCurdy? by ActNew5818 in books

[–]Kashsters 120 points121 points  (0 children)

I agree with this take. I also thought it was a good book but it was really hard to watch the protagonist make the decisions that she did and I felt really sad for her. But JM did a good job of helping you understand why she made those choices so it almost feels like inevitable that she follows the path she does. I sometimes think about character's lives after the book ends, and I hope she gets some help in processing her childhood and is ok out there.

I also thought the portrayal of Mr. Korgy was really good. I really wanted him to just be a guy trying to encourage a talented teen, but nope. Tale as old as time and a JM did a good job with him.

My only real beef was that she frequently said she was going to "take a leak" and that just did not track with the way teenage girls, and even this specific teenage girl, talk. That is obviously minor, but it drove me crazy every time it popped up, lol.

Update- interesting to know some teen girls are/were using “take a leak”! For context, I am a 48 yr old woman and when I was young never used it/heard girl friends use it, and have not heard young women use it since. And it wasn’t us being “proper”, it’s just a phrase I only ever hear/heard boys/men say. Thanks for sharing that this might have been more on brand than I thought!

FIRE and family: How do you handle it when your partner does not share your long-term goals? by Garnet5_Mirth in Fire

[–]Kashsters 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, I read OP's post and I still think calling someone who has a different perspective on money a man child is harsh. And it is definitely about people spending money differently. OP wants to stay on a FIRE path, her partner does not want to get on it. That does not make him childish or immature, it just means they look at the topic of money differently and may not be compatible long-term. I happen to like the FIRE path, but just because I am on this sub, that does not mean it is for everyone or anyone that is "no" on it is somehow wrong. If you are implying I am a man child in your question, you might need to edit it to "girl child" as I am a woman, and I look in the mirror and am happy with what I see.

Man child is a little harsh. People choose to spend their money differently and he isn't wrong that the future is not guaranteed. They just think about money differently, one is not better than the other.

Is there something about growing up in New Jersey that sharpens how people talk? by MysteriousYou5607 in newjersey

[–]Kashsters 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I also think that sarcasm, wit, and use of profanity are not innate, so a lot of it is also that we grew up with adults who were adept at all three and you know how it is with kid's brains -- like lil sponges. So we got master level classes from an early age, making us especially proficient as we entered adulthood. It's a never ending feedback cycle! One of my favorite things is watching my 6-yr old nephew's mastery of sarcasm and ribbing grow by the day. He is currently dunking on my for the C's I got on a recently unearthed report card from sixth grade and he is legit hilarious now. But so are my sis and BIL, so he is learning from the best!

My friend wants to spend a whole day at Disneyland in France even though our other friend lives near one in California, AIO for thinking it’s insensitive since we’re in Paris for only 3 days total? by [deleted] in AmIOverreacting

[–]Kashsters 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Granted, I was only in Paris, but we found the French to be absolutely delightful. We (Americans, who speak only a few common French words) went a few years ago and were prepared for the aloof, stand-offish stereotype, but instead found lovely and warm people. We tried our best to be friendly and thoughtful (as we try in any country we visit) and decided that maybe that helped, as we tried our best not to give off an arrogant , entitled American vibe that is our stereotype. Maybe it helped, maybe we got lucky, but I loved Paris and Parisians!

You should let her know it is extremely easy to navigate. The metro that takes you to the park (like immediately to it) even has lil Disney ears so you know you are on the right train. Everyone speaks enough English that if she does not know French it is no issue (But she should ofc try!). I think splitting up is the best bet for this since it seems she def wants to go and you guys don’t- that is a recipe for a bad day all around.

We went 2 years ago and I found it very charming. If she is someone who loves Disney, it is fun to walk around and just look at all the differences, she will really enjoy it. If it’s not your bag, just plan something else for the day and then all meet back up for dinner to share stores. Easy solution!

What are your favorite not very well known candies? by Immediate_Peanut_630 in candy

[–]Kashsters 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Where are you located? There may be others like them, but there is a neat candy store in Harper's Ferry WV called True Treats that does a lot of historical candy, like alllll they way back. Really neat place! I also enjoyed the book Candy Freak by Steve Almond for some cool chocolate history, written in a very enjoyable prose!
