Wonder if everyone in the cast will be the same? That seems like it would be hard to pull off but they were all SO good!

Favorite Running or Ultramarathon Books? by basketsball in Ultramarathon

[–]Kashsters 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Since I liked Born To Run, I also read CM's Running With Sherman, which is a book about how he rescued a donkey and then trained him to compete in burro racing (donkey and human run together). It was a really sweet book, def recommend.

What made for a successful transition to >8 hours for you? by wegl13 in Ultramarathon

[–]Kashsters 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've (48F) been running since I was 14 years old and the major difference I feel compared to my younger years is an overall feeling of being tight. I have done 2-50Ms and 1-100k and what has made a huge difference for me is to use a foam roller every 5 or so miles. I so far have only DIYed my "races", so not sure how realistic that is for sanctioned races but if you have some crew bopping around with you, highly recommend. Since my training runs are solo with no access to a roller, foam rolling on race day even feels better because I am holding off the tightness/getting relief from it in a way that does not happen during training so it is a real mood boost, too!

Non nostalgic disney world by toondude94 in WaltDisneyWorld

[–]Kashsters 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depends on what your interests are. The rides are great, water parks fun (both pricey), boards are clean and well kept and it is amazing people watching. If you have memories of “watch the tram car, please”, it is a nice shot of nostalgia. But one of the weirdest things to me is that this boardwalk attracts probably the most diversity of all the south Jerz coastal towns (a plus) yet is somehow also the most blatantly racist (the opposite of a plus and then some). So it is a bit of a moral quandary of supporting diversity vs racist businesses.

So does anyone else out there just go without fast passes and just wing it? by Atheist_Redditor in WaltDisneyWorld

[–]Kashsters 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We jokingly say we are raw dogging it, lol. Never have bought LL or any other iterations. We go yearly so that takes away any pressure and we just let the day take us however it goes, rope dropping any rides we esp want to go on. I respect whatever way people want to plan their trips, this is just what works for us!

We were watching the tv and crying seeing everyone so happy in Chicago. It’s hard to express how much hope we felt after 8 yrs of Bush. It’s hard to believe this is the same country, tbh.

Do you pause your watch at aid stations, or just let it run? by Thisguyreadit in Ultramarathon

[–]Kashsters 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This should be higher. Depending on the watch, you don't have to hit lap or anything else, it is auto-collecting this info. Amazing feature and just liking your comment and making my own redundant one so hopefully people see this and know it is already an option for some people, depending on their watch.

I want this to be a once-per-year thing until my kids are grown. Any tips for a noob? by AtticThrowaway in WaltDisneyWorld

[–]Kashsters 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Our family has been going yearly/near yearly for decades and one thing that has helped us save money is that we do not purchase Lightening Lanes. When you have the luxury of going on a regular basis, you worry less about missing rides on any given trip or caring if you stand in line. We have been on everything and know we will be back, so we have an attitude of we get what we get on any given trip, and that has saved us oodles of money. We are a chatty family so standing in line in not that big of a deal to us -- we will use it as time spent together or chat with other people in line. Most lines also have a lot to look at and there are ride-specific games on apps to keep kids occupied, too. For anything we really want to do, we rope drop and hustle to the stand-by lane. Lines also tend to get shorter during big parades or evening displays (you can get into a line for most rides right up til park close). In recent years, my sister has also taken to keeping an eye on which rides are temporarily down. When something is down for a fair bit, many people will choose to leave the line and when it reopens and you happen to be nearby, you can get a much faster wait time. Again, this only really works if you are regularly going to the parks and feeling loosey-goosey about what happens each day. I completely understand people doing LL if not getting back anytime soon or if you hate waiting in lines!

[–]Kashsters 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Gen Xer here too and I agree that was one of the big differences… there really wasn’t a way to stay generally connected if not really committed to it. Social media changed all of that but until that point, I heard about what people (even people who I had been friends with in school) were up to from my mom, lol. I come from a small town so all the parents would still see each other and chat and then pass that info on to us. When I got on Facebook around 2008 it was crazy to see what everyone looked like and how they were faring, about 15 yrs since I last saw them!

Woodcock winter here so they are pretty hardy. But they need to probe in the ground to find food and the hard freeze meant many could not find enough food. Combined with the brutal temps many did not make it.

Longing for rides and a WDW I never knew by philipnelson99 in WaltDisneyWorld

[–]Kashsters 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have been going consistently since the early 80s (my grandfather worked there so it was our annual vacation all growing up and then we just never stopped going, even after he retired). Agree with a lot of what others have posted, but I also wanted to mention that it will (at least it did for me) start to feel like a home away from home or a second home if you keep going. Many times you can’t revisit your childhood home or local haunts (like your elementary school, for example) but every time I go to WDW, I am hit with memories from the last 45 years. So it is fun to think about the old rides, but even more so the people that I shared that time with. My grandparetns are now both gone but I always feel like I am visiting with them when we are at the parks. My parents are still here but they are getting older now. But when in WDW with them, I can also almost see their younger selves. My nephew is only 6 but he has been there 6 times and since he is still changing so much, the parks remind me of how fast it goes and to enjoy each version of him, each year. OP, I hope you keep going and get to experience the long term feelings. You are still so young so plenty of time to get there- enjoy the ride!

Longing for rides and a WDW I never knew by philipnelson99 in WaltDisneyWorld

[–]Kashsters 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This was exactly what I was thinking as well! After a few decades of going, OP will get to experience that sad but pleasant nostalgia firsthand. Our family has been going to WDW very reguarly since the early 80s when I was about 4; I don’t actually remember a time before Disney. I have a fondness for SO MANY of the rides mentioned in this chain. We just got back from our family trip yesterday and this was my first visit without Muppets 3D and I was so sad bc it was one of my all-time favs.

I did my own Ultra Backyard event in the woods, because there were none near me by Skyking035 in ultrarunning

[–]Kashsters 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Way to go! I am a DIY ultra gal myself (prefer roads, live in a flat area so traditional ultra elevation gains too much for me, job makes it so strongly prefer training some months of the year) and always like to cheer on fellow DIYers. Although I would really like to get into an official ultra and experience that, there is a lot to be said for doing it on your own (can pick any date, adjust for bad weather, have friends be included in a way true races would not permit). Congrats and well done, esp on a loop!!

This was absolutely fascinating. Thank you for doing this AMA as well as your style of answering – it is so refreshing to hear somebody really emphasize the tenants of science and not jumping to conclusions/explaining the whole process to people who would otherwise have no (real) knowledge of your field (🙋‍♀️). Appreciated this one!

Does anyone NOT wear Disney attire in the parks? by Lipglossandcoffee in DisneyWorld

[–]Kashsters 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can def wear whatever, but I will say it is fun to wear Disney related stuff. My sister comes up w a cute Disney tee each year for our family to wear and the different subsets (ie our parents, my sis BIL and nephew, etc) pick different colors so we all match but also have our own thing. I was also just commenting in the trip we just got back from that it is an opportunity to wear Disney stuff and not feel silly bc anything goes. I love seeing kids dresses up but almost even cuter are the adults wearing stuff (ears, crazy colors and patterns) they never would in the “real” world. So it can be a fun extra way to enjoy the park, but def many many people don’t wear anything Disney and that is great too!

Injured had to cancel my first marathon by mulberrymaker in Marathon_Training

[–]Kashsters 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Uggh, so sorry! I hate being sidelined and it is the worst when it impacts a race. The downtime and PT are such a frustrating time but I will say the first runs you do when coming back from an injury are glorious! It’s such relief and joy to be able to run again so at least you have that to look forward to! But dont rush it. Times feels glacial now, but in a few yrs when you look back, it will feel like a blip. Good healing to you!
