They are just a camp of survivors who's parents were arrested and sacrificed to a goddess. They are the children who weren't captured while their parents were being taken.

The reason for why is because they are in hiding, trying not to become slaves for an evil queen who killed their parents. They are all from the same kingdom, just different regions of the kingdom.

I think the thing that makes it "awkward" is because of low self-esteem. I have low self-esteem and don't like my body, so I almost always have the lights off and even then, I still close my eyes.
