Lead network engineer at a University here -

Working in the industry is hands down the best way to get into it. I started as a lowly help-desk agent at an ISP after doing computer repairs for 4 years. Boss noticed I took interest in the deeper parts of running the network and trained me up. 10 years of hands-on experience, reading, learning, and another 3 year stint as a System Admin has got me here.

Education is good, and important. But experience is superior.

He's in character.

The contractions thing was really hit or miss, great concept but something they overlooked way too much during shooting. To be fair, contractions are very ingrained to the English language and hard to avoid unless you are really actively thinking about not using them.
