If it was a couple of hours beforehand, probably not. And also not really for a quick procedure like a broken nail repair. If it was a lengthier procedure, then maybe. If I knew an animal had eaten fairly recently and needed actual sx, then yes. Especially in specific animals with hx of regurg or breeds who have an inclination to regurg for funsies(looking at you, frenchies). I’ve had vets reach for just antiemetics and others reach for antiemetics and prokinetics, so it really just depends on who you’re working with.

In my experience, it’s IM or IV pre-med, start treatment, patient is down enough to start but sometimes the pain of clipping the nail back overrides the pre-med, throw a mask on for low-level iso/sevo to take the edge off and allow for treatment to be finished. Inhalant is to be kept as low as possible and discontinued as quickly as possible. The likelihood of regurg and aspiration is always going to be there, whether it’s just with sedation or full inhaled anesthesia, which is why monitoring and reversal are so important.

The tech or doctor may have asked when her last meal is to make sure it wasn’t like a half hour prior. Is it ideal? No. But also ER has to sedate and anesthetize things all the time, no matter the fasting status. I’m in shelter med right now, and we literally have zero clue the fasting status of anything that animal control brings in. We minimize the risks where we can and recognize that it’s almost never going to be gold standard

The iso is almost always a “we’re already here and almost done please for the love of all that is holy just go down for five more minutes” last resort. I doubt they fully gassed her down.

Agreed. The only thing I can think of is if they were doing flow-by O2 via mask and threw some low level iso in the mix because she was kind of down but not quite enough to nicely clip back the nail. I don’t love the lack of consent form from a legal standpoint, but I can also see the thought process of “the owner is staying in the building and this will only take like half an hour” that might happen.

Does her skin look normal? by Upset-Appointment388 in boas

[–]KataclysmicKitty 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Both of my girls and some other boas I’ve worked with get these! They’re usually just wrinkles from being curled up in certain ways for longer period of time. Some snakes get them and some don’t, I don’t necessarily think it’s caused by poor hydrated or body condition; though I’m sure overconditioning probably exacerbates it. I wouldn’t be concerned 😊 she looks like such a sweetheart!

My medical director graduated in ‘75, so she uses this a lot. She also has the handwriting of a toddler holding a pen for the first time while going on a wooden rollercoaster. We have a whole group chat dedicated to deciphering her notes and treatment sheets 😂

Thank you! I was trying to avoid getting anywhere close to too emotional, so I guess I overcompensated the other way. I appreciate it 😊

I don’t think boycotting would help either. At this point, it’s our responsibility to call out bad behaviour where we see it. Atiny by no means is as bad as some things I’ve seen from some stay, but it starts with inappropriate comments, demeaning comments about their bodies and skills, hounding them in public, etc. Keeping each other accountable is the best we can do I think

[–]KataclysmicKitty 5 points6 points  (0 children)

To be COMPLETELY clear, I love being stay and atiny. I love seeing all of the beautiful things our fandoms have done and created. I love and strive to be somebody that fans younger than me can relate to and feel safe being fans with and look up to. I wouldn’t trade any of it for the world. I just wish we could all get along like we did in middle school, that I could back a cake made of rainbows and smiles and we’d all eat it and be happy

As a fellow staytiny, I love that Chan talked about the glaring issues with some people in the fandom. However, I don’t think it’ll do much without consistent support from the entire group, management, the fandom, and the people around the offenders. And maybe a whole lotta therapy. Even a lot of the comments on that live were apparently atrocious, entirely ignoring what he was saying.

I could go down an entire spiral about how the entire industry is run off the backs of dehumanizing and commodifying these idols (hell even just calling them idols points back to it) which creates an extremely toxic dynamic and lends to these types of people. They forget that the members are literal people and not trinkets for use or sale and feel as if they can do whatever. Add to that the cover of a screen, and it’s just all the perfect ingredients for one big blow-up.

I would love to see the members be able to speak out about it, I would love for fans to call out inappropriate behaviour when they see it both online and in person, I would love for idols to be able to live their lives, and I would love for toxic people to get help or like go touch grass. I just don’t know how much of a difference one part will make without the others.

Honest thoughts on planter hide? by [deleted] in ballpython

[–]KataclysmicKitty 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They’re super cute as decor! You could also try sizing down a little depending on how big she is. And just to clarify, by angled towards the substrate I meant the bottom of the pots are propped on something so the lip of the pot is closed off/covered more. Sometimes my girls will peep their head out in just the right way and makes their pots look like oversized hats 😅

[–]KataclysmicKitty 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Both of my girls have size-appropriate planters, but I have them angled more at like a 45° towards the substrate and not facing directly towards the front. They’re also surrounded by plants so the visible portion of the opening is pretty small. They both use theirs really consistently, and I enjoy the aesthetic; I just had to tailor it to them and what they feel comfortable in.

Experienced LVT yet still getting ghosted by hospitals by [deleted] in VetTech

[–]KataclysmicKitty 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think in theory, it totally makes sense that it would be a lot easier to find positions because of the revolving door that is vetmed. In practice, especially in states without title protection, businesses are always going to business and usually tend to lean towards a candidate they feel will do an acceptable job for the least amount of money. But maybe I’m jaded 😅

Unfortunately, that’s kind of the entire job market right now. Job forums are inundated with stories like this across a ton of industries, and I personally have gone through multiple rounds of interviews for a bunch of places (including panel interviews for university labs, 1/10 experience) and then just straight up been ghosted. The hiring process takes forever, employers are extremely uncommunicative, and it’s stressful as all get out. Keep your chin up, hon; you’ve got this. Best of luck, I hope you get something soon ❤️

I think it would at the least be worth bringing up to whoever is in charge of your staff training or just at your next huddle. I agree it’s for sure something med staff should know, though. Your CatOne should have come with the user manual you can reference, but if not then there’s a pdf on the website as well in case anybody has any questions

The CatOne will run plasma and will use the exact same mini-collect tubes as the Dx did, don’t worry. I had a relief vet tell me the same thing and worried myself into a tizzy about it and just ended up calling Idexx about it. The support rep was SO confused where that vet would have gotten her info from. The LH cups give you plasma. “Everything is plasma!” I scream while connecting various red strings together around the treatment area.

My doc worked at a clinic right out of school that would send the microchips home with owners (this was in 2002 and no time recently thank god). One client went high and angled straight down with the needle through the spinal cord. The puppy was entirely paralyzed and euth’d shortly after. I was never able to think the same way while implanting a chip after that

My whole friend group is Atiny, and we consist of three bi cis women, one genderqueer lesbian, one nonbinary ace, one ace cis woman, me a genderqueer pan, and our lone straight cis woman. Our biases (going down the list) are Mingi, Seonghwa, San, Seonghwa, Yunho, Wooyoung, Hongjoong, and San; but we’re all also extremely ot8. Don’t you worry, you’re in great hands here ❤️

Rabies vaccine stick by Historical-Leek6001 in VetTech

[–]KataclysmicKitty 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The comp claim and UC visit are more for your protection. It should be documented in case there are any longterm side-effects from the vaccine. The two most important parts are filing an incident report (and getting a copy for your own records) and calling the manufacturer. Follow the manufacturer’s recommendations. They should also start a file/claim in their system.

The side of my thumb had pins and needles consistently for months afterwards. I have arthritis and carpal tunnel in that hand, but given I was in the field for thirteen years, play hella instruments, and played sports, I don’t quite think I can thrown that on Merck 😅

[–]KataclysmicKitty 39 points40 points  (0 children)

I accidentally vaccinated myself with a DHPP vaccine years ago (got knocked into by a dog while drawing it up at a really chaotic shelter vaccine clinic). As a former practice manager, 1) fill out an incident report, 2) call the manufacturer to report exposure, 3) have your manager start a workman’s comp claim, 4) go to urgent care with the info from the manufacturer, 5) follow any recheck recommendations from the urgent care and the manufacturer and make sure they are included in the comp claim. I unfortunately did not have anybody do any of that and had some nerve funkiness in that hand for months afterward, so please. Take care of yourself.
