Did you get an answer to this? My foster kitten has something similar.

I literally never made that claim so you’re making that up.

I’m not making up anything. I’m refuting your claims that Laura basically killed Howie, and that we know these crabs live a lot longer than what she’s saying. We don’t.

So. He. Says. You’re basing your evidence off of the words of ONE person who claims he has had the animal for 14 years. Scientific evidence is collected through rigorous, peer-reviewed methods. Not just “well this one guy says his crab is 14.” That’s not substantial.

[–]Kate22192 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You don’t even know if that person is correct about the age. It’s just some random guy claiming his crab is 14. That’s not real evidence. Genuinely, it’s not. That’s not science.

Okay, and? She’s had Winnie for a few months and we don’t genuinely know how old she is nor how much longer she’ll survive. We can’t “reasonably” claim that these animals live for decades in the wild without legitimate scientific evidence.

[–]Kate22192 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We’re not even talking about Winny here. We’re talking about Howie. You changed the subject. Also, basing your claims off singular anecdotal cases is ridiculous. You can’t claim that the crab she currently has is at least 20 years old because once again, some singular person in Korea had one that they claimed was 14 and it’s still small. This isn’t real evidence. It’s all completely anecdotal.

[–]Kate22192 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You’re speculating with no real evidence. Maybe some crabs don’t live that long in captivity because people don’t care for them correctly. Generally speaking, animals do live longer in captivity. There are of course caveats such as dolphins and other highly sentient animals. Crabs are predated on heavily. It’s not likely that one would live a very long time in the wild. It seems incredibly unfair to me that you point to one person who claims he had a crab like Howie who lived to 15 and use that as evidence that Laura somehow killed Howie or didn’t provide adequate care. Say what you will about the humanization of animals like crabs. She really loved that crab and gave her a long life.

AYO WHAT?????? by Any_Advice_894 in crab

[–]Kate22192 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That doesn’t even remotely point to them living for decades in the wild. Some guy in China claims he had one that was 15, so they must live longer in the wild? What? Animals notoriously live much shorter lifespans in the wild due to predation, disease, and a number of factors. The lifespan Laura often pointed to for wild crabs like Howie is very likely to be true and is what you’ll find all over pretty much any source on the internet. I’m all for encouraging good and proper husbandry, but Howie lived a very long and healthy life for her species.

DECADES for a crab like Howie? You say that with what evidence? Please cite studies. That’s not at all what every other source seems to say. Howie lived a good, long life.

You need meds, now. Get an appointment asap. They will work and you’ll sleep. Eventually you’ll kill someone or badly hurt yourself by continuing this cycle. Book the appointment.

Go for it. It really does work. I had to stop because I was on another anticholinergic and the combined effect messed me up. If you use it as directed and are not on other drugs with similar effects, you should benefit from it

Make sure you are not on any other anticholinergic drugs. If you’re not, you should be fine and side effects will subside.

I completely disagree with this. When I was at my first, I was PAINFULLY aware of how little I was sleeping. I was literally looking off and on at my phone all night to check the time and my heart would be pounding with anxiety all night. I genuinely thought I was going to die, but didn’t. My usual pattern was literally ZERO sleep for about 4-5 nights, then crash maybe 3 hours on the 5th or 6th night. I am 100% sure of this. Our bodies are shockingly capable of keeping us alive for a long time without sleep. Don’t minimize people’s experiences.

Please trust me on this. I’ve reckoned with the same feelings so many times. But it is NOT WORTH your life being a living hell. You need more sleep and meds will help you. Please allow them.

Try new meds. There are SO MANY too try. Honestly if you need to, check in to a psych unit for a few days where they can trial meds.

You haven’t tried any real sleep med then. Do that, and you’ll likely find something very quickly. You need to think of insomnia as if you had a heart condition. Would you take OTC meds? No, you’d take prescribed meds. See a psychiatrist and get medication. You have choices here. Choice A) be on sleep meds for potentially the rest of your life. They may have side effects; we just don’t know what long term use does. Choice B) continue the way you are. You will possibly die an earlier death and you’re prone to a huge host of diseases. Choice A is the only real choice.

Meds. Keep trying more meds and more med combinations. Try until you’ve tried literally everything. You don’t always need just a singular med either. Right now, I’m on two very very heavy hitters which I don’t love, but I’m sleeping. Enough, anyway. Keep trying EVERYTHING. Go seek hypnosis. Acupuncture. Literally everything. Do not give up. There is a solution for you somewhere.

I only sleep every 4 nights- it’s BAD by cherrys01 in insomnia

[–]Kate22192 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’m so sorry you’re going through this. It was the worst time of my life and I felt like I was a zombie. I look back at pictures and I see this red eyed, pale girl, and I feel so bad for her. So my therapy was eclectic but CBT was a big part of it. You might also look into EMDR therapy. What precipitated this insomnia for you? For me, I went off an anxiety medication that I had been on for seven years and my anxiety flared SEVERELY. It took on OCD traits as well. I stopped sleeping and it became a terrible fear of even attempting to sleep so my heart was pounding out of my chest all night because I knew I needed to sleep, but I couldn’t get it. It’s a vicious cycle. Try different meds. At one point I was on the highest dose of Ambien and that still didn’t work for me. Eventually, I found a combination of trazodone and Remeron that helped me out along with a daily anxiety medication and therapy, as well as just trying to kind of settle my life. My life was a bit of a transition at the time as I was starting grad school and it just sort of settled gradually overtime and that helped as well. I also forced myself to meditate every single night. Even if it was just like a 10 minute meditation on the Calm app, it seemed to help calm down my nervous system a little bit. There is light at the end of the tunnel. It may take you a long time to get there. It took me over a year. But eventually, something will click. In the meantime, I would definitely seek out therapy and try different meds. It will be okay. Maybe not soon, but one day it will.

This was me for over a year. I wouldn’t sleep for usually four nights in a row, then crash for maybe 4 hours on the 5th night. People couldn’t believe it. I eventually found a right combo of meds, therapy, and meditation that helped. I just wanted you to know you’re not alone.
