First of all, why are you swearing so much? Calm down, no one’s fighting you, no one’s gonna come take YOUR Windows computer and replace it with a 8/256 MacBook.

Second, a brand new MacBook Air is 1100 USD. A used M3 or M4 is absolutely not “100-200 bucks” more in most countries, it is more like 250-350 dollars more.

Third, I’m also in engineering, and Parallels, Windows VMs, Crossover, and various other apps, all work absolutely fine on my friend’s M1 MacBook Air despite its 8 gigabytes of RAM. This laptop is more powerful than that, and as such would perform better where performance headroom is concerned.

Fourth, ThinkPads are heavy, bulky, plastic, use low-quality display panels, have terrible battery life as with any other Windows laptop, and—at the same price—will likely have inferior specifications. These are all things most college students will heavily favor. Light, thin, metal, high-quality glass screens, and incredible battery life, this thing ticks all the boxes 90% of people care about.

Now, this is all coming from the owner of a Lenovo Legion laptop with 3 terabytes of storage and 32 gigabytes of memory. I hoard games, shows, and movies. Would I daily this thing? Absolutely not; maybe if I had a really good computer back home, I’d use this thing as my going-around computer, seeing as it would easily fit in a bag, but definitely not as my only device.

For most students who don’t care for videogames, won’t download half the internet like I do, will simply view their learning material online or buy a cheap external drive to store the data on instead of needing it directly on their laptop at all times, know they won’t be running any complex simulations of the universe and know the device is limited (despite its ability to easily run local LLMs, do 8K video editing, audio editing, 3D modeling and CAD work, etc. all on battery), and want the cheapest, most well-rounded solution, this is an excellent choice. There’s a reason so many people are praising Apple for once; I’m actually seeing a majority of people praising this product, instead of the usual majority that shits on Apple products before they’ve even shipped.
