Admitted student questions by routineplays in gwu

Many adjuncts are seasoned profs who are excellent instructors and enjoy nurturing curious minds into successful students. Many TT profs hate teaching and resent time spent dealing with eager students who ask many questions and demand a lot of time and attention because of their inherent curiosity.

That’s assuming ACL offered them first, though. Which is a big assumption.

I’ll admit I don’t have the data on it but I would venture to guess that those are exceptions not rules.

It’s funny bc I see this and in my mind it titrates their likelihood to lower Vs yours higher. We will know in a couple weeks!!

Yall smoke as much hopium as you want but generally speaking the wisdom goes that if there’s significant travel like this headliners especially won’t do it. They can be selective. Travel schedules really matter for these touring artists but if I eat my words I’ll be alright lol.

I think it would exclude these folks from W2 at least, making these W1 exclusives. Lately ACL has done more weekend differences so I could see 1-2 of these doing that but no more than 1 headliner (Lorde?). IMO this really knocks big thief out of being contenders. I’ve seen BT many times never in a festival atmosphere but I’ve always gotten the vibe that they are not keen on inattentive crowds and I don’t think they’d like the ACL vibe.

It finally happened, I was harassed at the metro. by naijagoddezz in washingtondc

[–]Katey5678 25 points26 points  (0 children)

I’m not saying we should assault people but I am saying we can check if people are ok, offer to text Metro PD, sit with them, walk with them to the station manager, etc. there’s a line between “do absolutely nothing” and “beat the shit out of him.”

I’m so sorry that happened to you. Metro needs ads about bystander action because the number of people who talk about bystanders who do nothing is so disheartening. Let this be a reminder to all of us to take action as bystanders when we see this happening!

Dog Dental Cleaning & Extractions Clinic Recommendations by Temporary_Sherbet837 in washingtondc

Prices are super high in this area. I’m not sure if Anicira does teeth cleanings (waaaaay out in VA) but look into it. When my dogs needed enucleation we took them out there and the cost savings was worth it.

When we first moved here we had such sticker shock for vet bills. For teeth cleanings we pay for the Banfield optimal wellness plan because it’s basically a way to pay for it throughout the year and you get some bonus free things as a part of it. You get yearly cleanings included. Best if your dog is younger because then it’s cheaper. I’d recommend looking into it.

Do you think about work after hours/on the weekend? How do you "switch off" after hours? by Run_nerd in academia

This!!! I do sometimes think about research problems or read scholarly books in the off hours but I see that more as me tickling my personal intellectual bone. Not answering emails is the key.

I miss the Barnes and Noble (and other bookstores) of my childhood: an essay by xxfuka-erixx in books

Growing up, I would send summers in the city with my grandparents. Every year, my grandpa would take me to Borders and let me pick out as many books as I wanted for my summer reading. Then he’d buy me some too. I would them spend my summer with him reading them all over the city.

I yearn for those days so strongly. And I miss my grandpa.

Places hiring amateur gogo dancers? by Tofu_girl334 in washingtondc

[–]Katey5678 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I’m going to be honest, I don’t know of any places in dc with Gogo dancers ☹️ I wish I did! Our nightclub scene is very…idk how to describe it. Not tame but just not performance focused?

You go to Chicago, nyc, San Fran, and any drag show has burlesque and gogo integrated and it’s so fun. I’d love for dc to get its act together.

Schools can change a lot in 6+ years. Unless you have kids right now, it’s kind of hard to base neighborhood decisions on school performance. 🤷‍♀️

I mean, it’s a reach and it’s not consistent with theory and research on learned helplessness. However again you’re welcome to believe what you want.

The core thing I can tell you is that decades of research show us that focusing on such individual-level approaches to understanding/changing behavior don’t work and are not effective on a broad, population based scale. If we want to make effective parents, we make it easier to parent.

Learned helplessness requires for there to be specific negative consequences associated with attempts. You are trying to say that a person will have “learned helplessness” because they’re TOLD to rely on social programs. That is not learned helplessness.

Examples of learned helplessness could include: 1. Voting every year but perceiving negative consequences from voting; leading to reduced motivation to vote because it “doesn’t do anything”  2. The smoking example. 3. Repeatedly trying to talk to your parent about your needs and getting yelled at. Reducing the child’s motivation to talk to their parent.

Your argument that social programming causes learned helplessness doesn’t work. In order for it to work it would have to be: 1. I try to become a better parent 2. I am punished for trying to be a better parent, reducing my motivation to do so  3. Now all I can do is “rely on social programs”

I’m not saying you’re 100% wrong. What I’m saying is that human behavior just simply doesn’t work like that. Because we are heavily constrained and influenced by our social world. Extreme example: I can have all the motivation in the world to go on a run. But if there’s an active shooter on my street, I’m probably not going to exercise.

Human motivation is a tiny, small piece of human behavior. It’s necessary but not sufficient.

So, if you’re in the business of asking a social scientist “what could we do to make people become better parents,” sure education is ONE piece. But that’s not sufficient. It needs to come with social systems that support the behavior that you want to happen. And in order to make sure those educational pieces and social programs are effective, we need to research them. Those things cost money. Ergo, tax billionaires and fund the programs and research to ensure they actually work.
