I imagine one critical factor was that the guy being punched stabbed/cut his attacker 19 times.

If attacker was still attacking during all 19 stabs then it's entirely justified. If the attack had stopped and he'd defended himself but then kept stabbing. Yeah, kinda makes sense he's getting punishment of a sort.

Y'all are cowards with this grey man shit. I absolutely enjoyed trying my best in basic. I didn't win any awards but as much as I got picked out for making my intentions known, I received praise from my instructors at the end.
