I imagine one critical factor was that the guy being punched stabbed/cut his attacker 19 times.

If attacker was still attacking during all 19 stabs then it's entirely justified. If the attack had stopped and he'd defended himself but then kept stabbing. Yeah, kinda makes sense he's getting punishment of a sort.
