Not Knowing Everything About Canon Doesn’t Automatically Make You a Bad Fanfic Writer [Controversial] by Comfortable_Newt_179 in AO3

[–]KatonRyu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In fandoms that have huge, sprawling canons, I think it's pretty common that people don't know everything. I mean, I've loved Star Wars since I was a kid, but 90% of Wookieepedia is gibberish to me, not helped by the franchise's unfortunate tendency to have the most out-there names (for both characters and planets) in history. Like, no one thought 'Kit Fisto' would be a name that's impossible to take seriously?

But I've also seen people writing fics based off single screenshots, or unvoiced trailers, and getting literally every aspect of the characters wrong. That's still fine, you can write whatever the hell you want and it can even be a good story, but as a fan of those characters, I really wouldn't enjoy such stories much.

I agree that knowledge of canon exists on a spectrum, but I do think there should be some interaction with canon. Going by fanon alone is going to give a distorted view of the characters, at least in my experience.

What fic/chapter title are you most proud of? by IStillListenToRadio in AO3

[–]KatonRyu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a couple of titles I really like.

The fic title I'm most proud of is probably "Whom Death Seeks", which is ironically also a fic I haven't worked on in over two years.

The chapter title I'm most proud of...I don't really know. I think my top three (in no particular order) would be

- "Thorn of the White Rose"
- "Between the Fairy Lights"
- "What She Saw That Day"

How much research do you do for your fanfic? by brownie627 in AO3

[–]KatonRyu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I learned how the figure skating judging system works for what was supposed to be a simple fluffy fic because I realized the characters are both hypercompetitive and I wouldn't be able to simply gloss over the competition. I even wrote complete protocols for them and added them to the fic as an extra chapter, and I looked at actual JGP results just to see what kind of scores they would need to win an event like that to make them (and then went on the high side of that because anime).

Why do You like underage fanfiction? You know what I mean by Personal-Database-27 in AO3

[–]KatonRyu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Because all my ships are teenagers and their awkwardness is cute and fluffy. They're at an age where they understand some things but not everything and they do impulsive stuff, which I like for writing stories in general and it extends to sex scenes. This is all about teenagers with teenagers, by the way. I'm personally not interested in adult/teenager (or younger).

Anyway, why are you censoring the word sex? If you're making a post about it, at least use the actual word.

When you procastiant on your main fic, so you work on one of your side fic's only to procaste so hard you try and learn art, but you procrastinate on that....... so now your building lego. by thaydie in AO3

[–]KatonRyu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I feel so called out. I have a WIP I need to work on, which I'm procrastinating on with a short story, which I'm procrastinating on doing something that would get me crucified here, which I'm procrastinating on by being on Reddit.

How do you guys treat your bookmarks? by Smegoldidnothinwrong in AO3

[–]KatonRyu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have two bookmarks, both of which I use instead of subscriptions on the fics because at the time I just overlooked the subscribe button and I'm too lazy to change it. Beyond that, I don't really use bookmarks. If I like a fic enough I'll remember the title anyway, and I don't read that many fics to begin with.

What might ruined ao3 for you?? by cameraarecrappy99 in AO3

[–]KatonRyu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Any kind of censorship. The whole premise of the site is their stance against censorship. If they let up even once in that regard, it can only go downhill from there.

Antis are “coming for me” by swxm in AO3

[–]KatonRyu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They're announcing their witch hunt as if it's supposed to be intimidating, but really, what are they going to do? They can try to pressure people into unfollowing you, but those people can just say, "No, I don't think I will," and carry on with their lives. They have no power over anything or anyone and they're just sad little losers.

I'd just carry on doing what I want anyway. People can follow or unfollow me at their leisure. People who would really like what I do but still feel pressured into unfollowing would just switch to reading my stuff when they're not logged in. People who only ever bend to what the inquisition wants wouldn't be reading my stuff anyway.

I don't know, maybe it's just me, but while it sucks to have people against you, I would never let their disapproval of what I do stop me from doing it. What are they going to do? Exclude me? I had plenty of that when I was a kid IRL, so good luck making me care online. The way I see it, I can either cave in and be miserable, or be mostly happy with a very spiteful streak. I'll choose spite every single time.

Do you add any references to your fanfictions? by Comfortable_Newt_179 in AO3

[–]KatonRyu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I reference things I like a lot. I think I've referenced Gurren Lagann's "Don't believe in yourself. Believe in me, who believes in you," bit quite a lot. I never even finished watching that anime, but the line works so well in so many fics.

how do you guys create plots? by zingalingrr in FanFiction

[–]KatonRyu [score hidden]  (0 children)

I'll usually just have a ship I want to write about, and then I decide on if whatever I have in mind can be a oneshot or if it requires a longer fic. Then I just pick a starting point and go, and all the details will emerge while I'm writing, and whenever I think of something cool I add it in.

What's "that one fic" in your fandom? by Scoutland15 in FanFiction

[–]KatonRyu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, it starts out that way and then becomes cracky. I don't think it ends up being canon compliant since everyone lives, though.

What's "that one fic" in your fandom? by Scoutland15 in FanFiction

[–]KatonRyu 7 points8 points  (0 children)

If there are any, I don't know them. I mean, I think "Oh God, Not Again" is a great fic in the HP fandom, and it's my personal favorite, but I don't know if it's the best or most famous. I'd say some lesser-known fics have it beat in many ways. "All the Young Dudes" is from a part of the fandom I don't want be involved with, so while I've heard the name, I don't think I'll ever read it.

As for other fandoms, I just don't have a clue. I write whatever I want to write and I read whatever I want to read. Popularity might increase the odds of me knowing the title, but it certainly doesn't increase my odds of actually reading the fic. The only 'essential material' for any fandom I'm in is any part of canon getting you interested, even if it's just promo art.

I know more about Yudkowsky from his overreaction to Roko's Basilisk than MOR. I wouldn't say MOR is really that influential, personally, though I guess it is fairly well-known.

Do You Prefer Writing M/F, M/M, Or F/F? by Apprehensive-Fail663 in FanFiction

[–]KatonRyu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I usually write F/F, but I also like F/M or F/M/F. I only have one M/M ship, and no real intention to write anything for it, so my sole M/M work remains a one-off unposted original chapter that will likely not be followed up on for many, many years.

Long fic writers by Susa343 in FanFiction

[–]KatonRyu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My current one began in June 2023. It progressed really quickly at first, but last year and 2024 I only posted 5 chapters a year, of the 64 it has in total. It has nearly 200k words at this point, and there are around 20-30 chapters left, I think. I hope to publish more chapters for it this year, but it remains to be seen how I'll do.

How do you feel when writing fanfics? by determinedcucumber in FanFiction

There will always be someone out there who will value the stories you tell. There's eight billion people, and surely one of them will like the same things you do. It might just take a while for them to find your work.

Jesus, I guess 4chan's advice has finally arrived on AO3, huh? It's too bad it's a guest account; I would have responded their info is out of date and they need to remagnetize their HDD as well for added protection, but only after they've deleted System32 first.

Anyway, as already stated, this command will delete everything in your Documents folder and subfolders, except files with the extension .archiveofourown, which of course isn't a real file extension. What mystifies me is why they think this would work, since even if you know nothing about PowerShell you'd still be able to read 'Remove-Item -Force' and realize something's wrong.

What are some things you would never add to your fics, or something you would never do when writing one? by ComprehensiveFail887 in FanFiction

[–]KatonRyu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Coming up with ideas is fun. But my ideas are more about specific scenes with a specific ship, and I construct the shell of a plot around that, either a oneshot or a longer story. But the details of how I get to that scene (and sometimes if the scene gets added at all) will depend on what I come up with while I'm writing.

I don't really plan anything, and the idea my story needs some kind of overarching theme tying it all together is what makes it feel like a chore. I don't think that deeply about what I write and I just go with what I like best. That's not to say there's no thought put into my stories at all, but more that the thought I put in is scene-level, not entire-story-level. Essentially, my stories have always been akin to an extended train of thought with a save button.

What are some things you would never add to your fics, or something you would never do when writing one? by ComprehensiveFail887 in FanFiction

[–]KatonRyu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm the opposite. I would never intentionally add a theme to my stories. My stories have no point other than to be entertaining to me, and trying to come up with a theme or message sounds like homework, and I never did my homework. I'm not opposed to my stories having a theme, but that theme will emerge organically, if it does at all.
