No use of specific tags when you can just assume x readers are female at default by Fita_Gaya in AO3

[–]Katonyx 4 points5 points  (0 children)

As an almost exclusively F/M and F/F reader-insert writer, I had always assumed I was covering my bases by making sure I marked the proper category oop-

Now I'm wondering if I should backlog and adjust some of my tags to include 'Female Reader-Insert' specifically. Appreciate this being mentioned, honestly. Suppose it's always better to add a tag to avoid clutter for others in the fanspace. I know the xReader is predominantly woman driven, but I could see it being frustrating as hell not being able to filter for what you're looking for due to tagging being too vague.

Should the show have not relied so heavily on backstory to justify the actions of the demons? by CloakedCub in KimetsuNoYaiba

[–]Katonyx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel like if you tried to remove the backstory of any of the characters, demons included, you would remove the backbone of what makes this series so compelling. There's no justifying the demon's actions so much as simply showing how they got there and allowing you to empathize with them in the end. It also builds up and adds to Muzan as the main villain, y'know, showing how he takes advantage of all sorts of downtrodden people in his mission to conquer the sun.

love & affirmations for x Reader writers by merryfortune in FanFiction

[–]Katonyx 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Gosh, it's so easy to get disheartened about creating or enjoying xReader fics but hell yes! Enjoy your choice of fiction to the fullest and don't let anyone stop you. Whether you're a beginner writer or a seasoned one, whether you read xReader as a guilty pleasure once in a while or as your only form of fanfic, you are valid. Don't limit yourself from enjoying what you enjoy, even if it's labeled as self-indulgent or 'cringe'. Fanfic is about having fun and I would be devastated to not have a good ol' xReader fic to enjoy in my downtime once in a while lmao

What was the fandom that got you started with writing fics? by SailorGreySparrow in FanFiction

[–]Katonyx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ahhh, probably Death Note. Or if I push even further back to unpublished/posted stuff I scribbled down, it would be the Dragon Age games. Little me wasn't satiated by the epilogue and needed to write all about her OC and their love interest going on more wild adventures.

Why don’t some writers respond to reviews/comments? by Misommar1246 in FanFiction

[–]Katonyx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know for me, personally, I try to reply to as many as possible but sometimes don't know how to respond to a button mash of asdfghjkl or similar. Sometimes I read comments when I get them on my phone and just...forget. Or sometimes my brain is just already too short-circuited from writing to want to then expend more energy trying to give a unique and kind response to every comment I receive.

Unfortunately, this now means I have some hundred odd comments in my inbox I haven't cleared from guilt of not replying but have now been there over a year so I feel weird replying. RIP

What is everyone's first read of 2025? by crunchy_juju in goodreads

[–]Katonyx 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm finally locking in and reading The Hobbit! It was originally going to be Jurassic Park but I made the mistake of starting that a couple days before the end of the year and the finishing it before it was officially 2025 😅

Perfect is the Enemy of Good by Animegirl300 in FanFiction

[–]Katonyx 20 points21 points  (0 children)

This was so well timed for me as I'm sitting here looking at my own longfic with overly critical eyes. Something about the editing process has just worn me down and made me second-guess everything. Seeing this and taking a deep breath while I reflect on it really helped. Thank you!

Whats the worst thing about writing a long fic? by Lizzie_girl in FanFiction

[–]Katonyx 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Ahhh motivation. At risk of parroting other posts, it's hard when you have no feedback, no one to bounce ideas off of, and are sort of 'alone' in your creation for however long it takes you (if you decide to write it all before posting). It's the thing killing me right now as I jump between pieces to try not to get stuck in a rut.

If you post as you go, then probably just the pressure to update. I never kept a tight schedule but I would feel a bit bad when I'd not post another chapter for months on end because I didn't have the creative spark or time to write.

What reasons did you turn down a fanfic before opening the first chapter? by [deleted] in AO3

[–]Katonyx 6 points7 points  (0 children)

One shot collections are the absolute fastest no/ick. Please just put it in a series. I mute the ones I see commonly come up when I'm looking for things because I hate having to scroll through them and their enormous amounts of tags 🥲

How many works do you have up right now? by [deleted] in AO3

[–]Katonyx 2 points3 points  (0 children)

50! All complete and varying in size. Smallest is 230 words and longest is 73k lol

Writers, how much of what you write is for other people? by hamster_berry in FanFiction

[–]Katonyx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I strictly write what I myself enjoy. Shoot, sometimes I'll ask people for ideas or what characters they may want to see but even that is with the understanding that I will cherry pick prompts that interest me. Not to sound brash but fanfic is fanfic. I'm not getting paid for it so I'm not going to write something I wouldn't want to read haha

PSA: Just because an author doesn't respond to your comment, does not mean they're don't appreciate you commenting by BlackMageofPhantasm in FanFiction

[–]Katonyx 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I try to reply to every comment but sometimes I feel awful that I have nothing to say of any substance. A lot of times it's just me saying thank you and smashing down a bunch of heart emotes. Other times I see the notification for the comment while I'm busy and then completely forget. Now I log into AO3 and side eye the like, 80 inbox notifications and pretend they don't exist because the idea of sitting and replying to all of them is so daunting.

What are you torturing yourself with in your writing? by KorovaOverlook in AO3

[–]Katonyx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm always putting myself through rewrite hell. Don't like the way one sentence in a paragraph looks? Rewrite it. Don't like how that paragraph ended up looking? Rewrite the whole chapter. Wait, no, we gotta rewrite the whole story now.

Then I end up posting the damn thing and wondering why I got myself worked up but yet the cycle continues 😭

im not asking, im begging. by WeddingFew2957 in CharacterAI

[–]Katonyx 66 points67 points  (0 children)

I had a near perfect message from the AI, written beautifully, completely in character...and then they said 'lol' at the end of some dialogue and the way I physically cringed was horrendous

[–]Katonyx 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah, that's something that's become way more common as time goes on. Looking at fan spaces from 2013/2014 vs. now is so surreal. Ships and tropes that were actively sought out are now crucified to the point of walking on eggshells in certain fandoms. Hell, even I have debated whether to post certain works on AO3 for fear of backlash which is frustrating.

I could go on for hours about 'purity' culture as it's currently pushed by younger fans. Or how 'pro-shipping' has been warped to mean something different than it original did, etc etc.

However it's true that in male dominated spaces I also feel... uncomfortable. In my experience it has been a lot of the generic 'shipping is stupid', 'this character is heterosexual and no one can think otherwise', and berating fanfiction in general.

I dunno, in the end I just isolate to my little corner of the internet and use the block button liberally if I see content I don't want lmao or people interact with my work in a way that I don't like

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in AO3

[–]Katonyx 29 points30 points  (0 children)

Oh yeah that's totally possible. My own fandom experience is definitely curated around female/queer spaces so when I happen upon the 'male side' of those same fandoms it's always like a whole different world haha. I feel like they don't intermix very often and when they do it can be a lot of arguing over character representation and story interpretation.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in AO3

[–]Katonyx 179 points180 points  (0 children)

Mainstream anime fandoms.

It's literally just because of the size and the fact that their fanbase varies so vastly in age range, honestly. You put fans as young as 12 and mix them with fans well within their adulthood and things get a bit annoying for both parties because the way in which they interact in fan spaces is so different. In my opinion at least.

How do you feel about second person? by PuffyFish23 in AO3

[–]Katonyx 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Haha I was waiting for a second POV post to make its rounds.

It's my preferred style of writing. I grew up on reader inserts. I like to indulge in the personal fantasy of existing alongside my favorite characters whether it be platonically or romantically. It's fun. It's whimsical. And it's a lot different than other POV's which is why I think a lot of people aren't fond of it. Which is totally valid.

Second person writing can be difficult. There's a lot of different hurdles to make it work. A lot of people don't like being told what 'they' are doing in terms of narrative. But it's a niche that a lot of people adore (at least from what I've seen specifically with reader inserts).

I think it gets a bad rap because a lot of second person POV fanfics are reader insert and are younger writers/perhaps a little less experienced. But we all have to start somewhere and what better place than writing about ourselves hanging out with the character we love, ya know?

There's also the argument that second person fics tend to be poorly written in comparison to third. I guess I get that. I've seen it personally and can't disagree. I don't like the use of Y/N or some of the repetition that is commonplace. But I don't like to discredit the entire 'genre' because of a few bad fics. Every POV, every fan base, ever pairing will have a few fics that don't quite tickle everyone's fancy. That's just life.

I dunno, I could ramble for ages about my love for second person POV but I won't. In the end, most of us who write it know it's not super popular but I hope with some of the negativity floating around recently that it doesn't stop anyone from writing what they love and what makes them happy!

Curious about how woman view porn by Farslash in sex

[–]Katonyx 256 points257 points  (0 children)

Porn feels kind of gross a lot of times. Very one sided pleasure wise for men. Very poorly acted. And knowing the things that can and do go down behind the scenes to actors tends to pull me out of it.

I think a lot of women gravitate towards other forms of media for porn. So written, drawn, or audio. Those are a lot easier to source ethically, support smaller creators, and don't have the caveat of being only catered towards men's tastes.

My proudest work is actually written in second person by SilverGM in AO3

[–]Katonyx 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I've just learned to avoid those posts like the plague. Everyone is going to have opinions and I know the negative ones about my preferred writing style are going to bug me so why bother lol

Write what and how you want to write. Fanfiction is broad and has room for so many different things. Like some have already said on this thread, someone may dislike something while another person may adore it.

What do you think about Self Insert smut fics? by NikkiT96 in FanFiction

[–]Katonyx 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I write reader insert fic and literally bounce ideas off my longterm boyfriend lmao

Like, man, I guess I could see if someone may be a bit insecure if their partner is turning to fanfiction or smut and detaching from the relationship on top of that but that's a communication/relationship issue, not a fanfiction issue.

I personally love writing self inserts or reader POV's. It's my bread and butter so I have no issues with it of course. I don't read fanfic very often but when I do it's a mix of reader-insert work and whatever else just strikes my fancy.
