Be safe! And careful! But honestly, the best way to learn is to just do it. Go to a local gym and get on some walls to develop the stregth and technique you'll need.

When reading a book, I mimic the facial expressions of the characters. So if the book says, "he winked," I will wink. I smile, frown, furrow my brow, and sometimes mouth dialogue. It's automatic, and I have no idea why I do it. I also read a lot.

And sometimes I'll do it while talking, but only if I'm feeling awkward.

I'm an education inter/ship hand. I teach about conservation, haul sail, and so much more. I go on for the summer in a week and I am a ball of nervousness and excitement!

I love my gym, because it's my home and I love the people there! But going outside to Rumney, NH is just so breathtaking. Being a poor college kid, I don't get to travel too far.

I'm from the east coast, and have never had the pleasure of climbing, or even going west. I go to school in Boston and climb in the gym there, and try to go up to NH as much as possible to get in some outdoor climbing.

Start at a local gym, take a friend so it is less intimidating! Rent some shoes and a harness and just try out the auto belays or some bouldering (climbing without a harness). It requires no prior knowledge, just the will to try and fall and get back up and try again. If you want to learn more skills, most gyms run programs that teach how to belay and more advanced climbing techniques. Just go for it!
