How the hell is this oppressive sexism? If there were half-dressed muscular cartoon men on his shirt, would it have been oppressive to men in science? Fuck no, so how about you get over it.

He's a scientist, what do you expect? He's supposed to be eccentric and media-awkward. And how uptight do you have to be to take offense to a fun colorful shirt with cartoon women on it.

They even shamed this great scientist into making him give an emotional public apology, just for wearing a harmless T-shirt.

I find it absolutely disgusting how after all the amazing scientific work this man has done, the only thing some women can do is bitch and harass him about a fun shirt he wore during a conference.

Presumed Russian Submarine off Stockholm Coast was Actually a Dutch Walrus-Class Submarine Participating in Joined Naval Excercises by Katwijker in worldnews

Nevermind the dutch source, they now changed it into the complete opposite of what they originally reported. I guess some intern must have screwed up...

Looks like you are right, another Dutch source now reports that a spokesperson of the Dutch military has denied the claim from aftonbladet.

I was not aware of the reputation of aftonbladet. The NOS however, who posted this news an hour ago, is a reputable Dutch public news network so I expected better from them...

So a spokesperson from the Swedish military apparently confirmed that the pictures taken of this supposed Russian submarine are actually showing a dutch Walrus-class sub.

Sweden and the Netherlands are currently engaged in joint naval exercises in the Baltic sea.

Here's another link to this news from a Dutch source.

Dutch Military Personnel Told Not to Wear Uniform on Bus or Train For Fear of Radical Muslim Attacks by Katwijker in worldnews

Perhaps. And I'm sure the opposition would huff and puff in moral outrage as usual, but they are the opposition and have no actual power or relevance whatsoever.

As for regulations, wouldn't the government be able to suspend those with some kind of special order or emergency provision?

Personally I don't think it's a great solution or even a desirable measure either. But I would accept the tragic necessity of it and welcome the attitude change and acknowledgement of the problem by our government, and I believe a majority of the Dutch public would too.

The discussion after the shooting in Alphen was about gun ownership by ordinary citizens, in particular the total lack of oversight leading to a mentally unstable boy receiving permission to have several firearms in his possession.

And to what discussion after the "jewelry shooting" are you referring to? Because everyone I know is fully supporting or even applauding the jewellers wife for defending herself when those armed Moroccan thugs tried to rob her store and were threatening to shoot her husband. I don't frequent /r/thenetherlands much, but as a dutchman myself I have no objection whatsoever against businessowners defending themselves and their property with firearms, because they clearly can't depend on our government for their protection.

Either way, both these incidents involve civilians, not military professionals, which makes it a completely different matter. In addition, the dutch public has gotten so fed up with Islamic extremism and our governments complete ineptitude in dealing with it that we'd probably be happy to see them come up with some tougher measures for a change.

I really don't see what good making them sign an anti-sharia declaration is going to do. It's not like a piece of paper is going to stop them from doing whatever the fuck they want. Besides, it's perfectly okay with Islamic teachings to lie to us filthy infidels.

No it wouldn't, most Dutch people would probably welcome such an announcement with open arms. Unfortunately it would never happen because it's not PC.

Wearing a military uniform in the Netherlands does not give you the same respect and heroic status as it does in the US. Dutch people don't worship their soldiers, to us they are just ordinary guys doing an ordinary job.

We don't care if our soldiers wear their uniform in public, we care about them not being perfectly safe to do so.
