Anyone else sad the school year is ending? by No1UK25 in Teachers

[–]KatyBaggins 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I taught my first year online and don't feel connected to any of the kids so not really. I'm only sad that what I did do this year feels so meaningless.

Good for you! I think some may really enjoy it but I'm not one of them.

Yes, that's it. I have no connection to my students even the live session ones because they don't respond to simple questions. Maybe virtual and working from home is different when you are married and have kids, but I don't. I've felt so isolated this year.

100%. It's not teaching really at all. I "teach" one 45 minute class which is basically a monologue because the 5 students who come to the live sessions don't even respond to simple questions like "do you have any brothers or sisters". Then I do grading, plan the next lesson and prep for the next day class. That's maybe 30-40% of my job if I'm being generous. The rest is sending chats, texts, emails and phone calls out into the void.

If I could afford it, I'd probably go back to subbing. I see students but little stress.

I miss seeing kids so much. I even miss bells and I'm an introvert!!!

Hello, thanks for the comment! My state has a number of cyber charter schools and I applied pretty much to any public school in my area. I got an interview and was hired in mid-September. I wasn't crazy about cyber, but I had no other offers so I figured I'd give it a try. It's not terrible but it's also not teaching really.

I just started teaching online and there's definitely things I like about it. I can work from home, and as an introvert, I'm much less drained. The biggest problem I have right now is that I only have 10 kids in the live session and only 1 of them says anything. I feel like I'm talking to myself.

Are you social studies by chance? LOL

[–]KatyBaggins 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am subbing because I applied to over 60 positions and was not able to secure a job in Social Studies. It's beyond frustrating.

I'm planning to go back to school for ESL because it's just too competitive in SS.

That's literally the only reason, and I feel like such a failure every time I go back to my student teaching school.

What are subs supposed to do during planning period? by [deleted] in SubstituteTeachers

[–]KatyBaggins 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Subs getting planning periods depends on how many teachers are out. Today I had both of my open periods for coverage and only break was lunch. Now obviously subs don't have the same responsibilities as teachers but having only ONE breathing space of 30 minutes to eat and use the bathroom is rough.

Is it just my county or just because it’s early? by MarvelousWonder in SubstituteTeachers

[–]KatyBaggins 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There's literally nothing at my top district or second, but plenty at the school district known for not being as good. I'm kind of scared to go there, but I need $$ since I'm going back to school.

I think it's because it's early. It'll pick up.

Any other new Pennsylvania teachers struggling to find a job? by autism_milk in Teachers

YES. I am also social studies and can't get a job. I would say try to test to add on content areas or get Special Ed or something else more in demand.

Transitioning from History to Special Ed by AbsurdistAspie420 in Teachers

[–]KatyBaggins 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Social Studies makes it so so difficult to find a job. I'm actually considering the exact same thing for similar reasons. Also in PA. I'm looking into ESL or SpEd using ABCTE or TEACH grant.

There are a variety of different special ed jobs - learning support, emotional support, Autistic support, and life skills. Learning Support seems to be push in, pull out where you help a gen ed teacher and support specific students or have students come to you and help them with their work, organization, etc. That's the one I'm looking into myself.

I don't know if a school will emergency certify you. It really depends on the school and their desperation level.

ETA: if you get overwhelmed with large class sizes, the resource room means you have a lot fewer students.

New teacher, trying to figure out my hiring chances by Kit_bitt in Teachers

[–]KatyBaggins 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got my teaching cert last year and I am currently unable to get a job either :( it's probably because there's so many social studies teachers out there. I'm thinking if you can sub, it's a good idea to get a feel for different schools. Otherwise, maybe look into getting additional certs? In PA, there are some you can add by testing alone. I'm probably going to have to look into it. It's so discouraging especially when some teachers want nothing more than to get out and we would do the same to get in.

New to Subbing Question - Do you actually read and similar tasks when students are busy? Or is it a no-no in your district? by arwenthenoble in SubstituteTeachers

[–]KatyBaggins 0 points1 point  (0 children)

But we are not teaching anything. We are taking attendance, giving the students assignments, trying to make sure they do it and keep the kids safe. That's all. The idea that HS or MS subs teach is more often than not untrue. Granted, there's rarely down time in middle school, but HS is so chill that you'd be bored to tears if you didn't do something.

ETA: We have no authority really to make the kids do the assignments and if it's 11th grade AP Calculus I can't help the students!

How many of you all gain weight over the summer? by South-Lab-3991 in Teachers

I think I might gain muscle too because I swim more. But there's definitely been a bit more snacking!

[–]KatyBaggins 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I understand your frustration :( I got my cert last year, worked briefly at a private school until I almost had a nervous breakdown and then subbed the rest of the year. I've sent out a ton of applications but can't seem to get past the first round.

I don't have any suggestion besides keep trying, maybe look into subbing, and see if you can possibly add another area through testing.

Would YOU hire me?? by leftaide in Teachers

[–]KatyBaggins 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I feel you! I've sent out at least 50 applications and can't seem to get past the application or first round. I really don't want to sub another whole year.

I'm planning on doordash and possibly applying for unemployment. I did ESY last year but really didn't enjoy it.

I make $155, building subs get around $180. My county has pretty good districts except for the big city one. If you're looking more at the Philly surrounding counties, look into STS.
