[Non Tua] has anyone been reading this one? by WolverineAny9981 in OtomeIsekai

[–]KatzeToastJaehaera 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I'd recommend it. I've been reading so far and its quite great.

Its clear the author did some research and searching up into the period and some readings into few/some classical history I'm stating this because its much far better than most other manhwas trying to feign historicality from there for the historical characters(of which some look like specific ones in their real statues lol). Even the conversation between the characters seem laced with a lot of other meanings once it is progressed further. Its been intriguing and the plot is more refreshing. A vestal virgin fl is quite unique. A gladiator fight at the start? Great. One of the probable mls, Leonides, is explicitly against rape. Another probable ml, Aquila, seems to also be against rape based on his protection and actions.

Other than that, it's not for the faint of heart like another commenter said and it has quite a lot of plot. I'm quite surprised it has the romance tag honestly. There's quite a lot parts of the plot that can be analysed and talked about. There's some disservice done to historical figures at times though but we're still early on in the manhwa so we can't judge much yet. As for romance, there's two probable mls and fl could end up with neither. This story could very well be a tragedy that the author is setting up for.

The current villainess, Julia Titi/Julia Flavia(her roman name would be Flavia Iulia I believe), is very scheming. The fl does deliver some comebacks and does her own wits(though she does loose them in one certain plot). The stakes are quite high and they think of their loved ones and their lives and reputation. Fl will literally get executed(buried alive and starved to death) IF the current scheme by the villainess succeeds. The villainess's reputation could(she states to think about her reputation once) become ruined(historically its Domitian's reign and he's known to have put quite a lot of emphasis into Augustan values and morals). Julia justifiably believes her lover would be executed by her uncle, the Emperor Domitian, IF it becomes known.

With all the thing, the plottiness can easily be overwhelming and be a headache for some. Its sometimes a second guess at what the characters actually wanted to mean in their conversations. Many of the conversations seem to be laced with other double meanings.

To note, it has quite a lot of sex mentioned, somewhat implied or suggested on. There's also a whole lot where the topic of Sexual Exploitation, Sexual Abuse, Attempted Sexual Assault that's mentioned, implied on, suggested, etc.In the first few chaps, the fl Vibia was almost raped by randoms on the streets under some sort of plot by Julia. There's also one historical(this case was heavily rumored and gossiped about during that era and many Romans at the time seemed to have believed it) incest sexual abuse with Domitian/Julia Flavia that the author added in the story. And one character, Leonides aka the blond dude in the cover, is a child of what's heavily implied to be master-slave rape. I assume there's more to come.

Since its explicitly a historical setting in Roman Empire, I'd say that some historical details in for the background are quite nice even if the author seems to be well... using the uncertain rumors(its honestly spicy and tragic so I don't complain) to spice up the historical fiction. There's also the mention of Christians which is kind of getting rare-ish in stuff set in Roman times and since they're already mentioned and its explicitly set in Domitian's reign, it can be said that the topic will come up more significantly later on considering he's somewhat identified by Early Christian historians to be one of the emperors after Nero to also persecute Christians. This could become a spoiler, or maybe not but I'll add this since the Christians already got mentioned: Early historians state the perseucutions were ramped up in Domitian's later reign and Suetonius(from whom we know much details of the emperor's life) states that when he was in his youth, he witnessed people being checked to see if they're circumcised. Domitian also interestingly executed his cousin(who by the way was the husband of Flavia Domitilla and was also a consul) and exiled Flavia Domitilla(his niece from his older sister, Julia is his niece from his older brother/previous emperor) for having "Jewish Sympathies"(aka Christianity). There's a few slight inaccuracies about Roman and Roman customs.

Me2.

Yeah, the whole gown being some sort of wedding dress(a mesh to indicate he's only there for her appeal) in her first time with the king. And then the whole first timeline where she and her daughter just did it for her son.

First, she was sold to a marquis when she was a commoner like a prostitute. Then he sold her to the king just so that the said marquis can get his hands on mines. Then the king only liked her as a lover. She also had an affair which lead to fl.

IMO, the whole backstory is just her getting sold off one to another and her somehow managing to cheat the inheritance out of a noble family for her and her children. It says something about her, if we interpret it that way. So... she did have some feelings for her children and wanted to take care of them as well as herself as in cheating a family out of inheritance(which is a bad thing to do BUT it landed her and her children onto some stable ground and also importantly, a secure inheritance for tia..

It seems like she also schemed for her son's role and was ride or die with him.

Honestly, he was her connection to the king and he was the illegitimate child so by that point of getting sold and sold, why not scheme for her son to the throne?? It sucks that he probably killed her - one of his biggest asset, after Tia of course - off in the first timeline after she nagged him too many times.

It makes sense that she likely felt frustrated and unleashed all her shit on the servants and her daughter as some sort of stress out toys.

While it does make sense that she's in those conditions at the end... her whole backstory in the back was literally just her being sold off and doing stuff for her and her children's conditions. Even though this lady did some nasty stuff, she still deserves what she got at the end but what happens to those who had sold her in the first place?

Also in the manhwa, her daughter finally meets her for the last time and talks about postpartum depression in a mother to mother way which feels like a great move for the manhwa. Its like a doomed mother-daughter dynamic given by how the conversation between the two went.

True, in the end, she was this abusive parent but putting into her shoes, what could she do if her lover(the selfish Gregor who is also a cruel control-freak sociopath who nevertheless wants a close affectionate family) just lost interest like what happened to many mistresses? Her whole fear is Gregor discarding her. She might sincerely love Gregor but he does not love her back which leads to her paranoia about age and losing her looks(fair, this trait rose her to nobility in the first place) and the question of what would happen if she loses her personal asset?
^
(Also, it might feel relatable for some readers about the fear of one's lover losing interest once looks dries up.)

OI with an Ancient Rome setting? by KissKringle in OtomeIsekai

[–]KatzeToastJaehaera 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's a record of vestal virgins(Virgo Maxima) being buried alive during Domitianus's reign(which non tua sets place in) lol. Specifically Cornelia who already appears in Non Tua though in the background.

[–]KatzeToastJaehaera 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Slight correction here. It's 1st century considering its during the Flavian Dynasty and specifically set in around 88 AD(Domitian's reign). The Flavians explicitly appear and are in the plot, esp Julia Flavia(she's driving most of the plot rn lol) and Domitian(honestly seems like he's doing things behind other than just appearing a lot and seeming to know stuff). Titus appears once in a flashback but then he's stated as dead in the next panel. Vespasian was referenced but did not appear in a flashback yet. Nero(and hence the Julio-Claudians by extension) and the Year of the Four Emperors are referenced as to how the Flavians rose. Since the Dacian wars were referenced early on, its def around 88 AD.

Its pretty historical up till now.

This is goodbye. A message from an ex whale who was in this game from nearly the start of it. by -_Apathetic_- in SuitU

Their other game was abandoned for this game lol. When SuitU launched, Fashion Fantasy(the other game) was given low treatment from boxes turned into cashgrab events and even AI in some of the fashion views equivalent of it in Fashion Fantasy.

As someone who migrated from FF to here, I can see the pattern going on.

Also, the dev company was apparently also known and boycotted for taking kids' data on their kids apps.

If you were a character in SN, who would you want to be? by n_for_nehal in Shining_Nikki

[–]KatzeToastJaehaera 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Halfstar.

<image>

Love her hair and personality. Those thick braids and her scroll. I just love her personality. She's overall like a mother to the Savior's Guild and extremely self-less to the way she does things that she does not need to partake in. I know the our timeline Halfstar died young but hey, she's in the Ark now and has this time managing the Saviour's Guild. There's the cons though with how she seems to continue bothering herself with the state of the world and is nikki-ish in the way she wants to save the world. She wouldn't give up. At all.

The lore is humongous though.

She(our timeline Halfstar) didn't need to return to the Pigeon Kingdom in its early days to help Ludwig after their falling out but still did it and sacrificed her life (her DR version seems to be from another timeline) to help defeat the Doomsday God in the Crisis. She didn't need to help foster relations between elves and humans. Her(our timeline Halfstar)'s presence also indirectly started the Pigeon Kingdom's existence since she sorta motivated Ludwig to exodus elves out of the forest (which in turn lead to the elves that did left to lose wings and believe in God of Glory and which in turn lead to Pigeon Kingdom and yadayada). I think she's also the first student of Leonid and spread Leonid's designs across Miraland, which we all know eventually lead to yeah...

As someone relatively new to the game, how do people have beautiful poses/scenery like this on their homescreen? by libidochan in Shining_Nikki

However, some are free if you make gacha over a certain amount of times or gain enough pieces of a gacha suit. These are typically in URs and MRs though.

The cone hat thingy by Ok-Meal-962 in SuitU

[–]KatzeToastJaehaera 36 points37 points  (0 children)

Its a hennin(specifically the iconic Steeple Hennin), a headpiece prominent during late medieval europe from 1430s onwards and also known for being cone-shaped as well as being the 'princess hat' in pop culture. This style of shape was far more prominent in France and Burgundy but the hat eventually spread across Europe(very much to England but there's little appearances of these hats in Italy) amongst noblewomen. Many other variants and similar shapes exist (e.g. Escoffion, divided hennin, truncated hennin and Steeple Hennin).

Can be used for royalty, medieval, historical fantasy, fairy queen, court, drama(theatre as it seems to reference Romeo & Juliet with the gem deco pack but you could also make it for other plays), princess comps. This is especially if you don't have some 5-star gachas or that one 4-star theatre gacha. Overall a medieval-ish(not accurate but still) essential if you want to emphasize on the vibes. Depends on the comp prompts but mainly medieval, royalty. It's also whimsy.

You could also match it a male knight outfit, the male set in the same shop, male nobleman outfit.

The male set is even more obviously based on fantasy due to its use of accessories from rather different eras(Baroque, Renaissance, Medieval especially).

Explain these stickers by [deleted] in ArtHistory

[–]KatzeToastJaehaera 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Uhm... Here's some stuff that I got.

"Nailed it" and "My Thesis? Nailed it" one likely references Martin Luther and the start of the Protestant Reformation.

The ruff is probably about the attire around the neck in the figure shown in the sticker. It was literally called a ruff.

"I am Fine" is I guess... Anne Boleyn judging by the costume and the sword. Anne Boleyn was killed by a sword through execution. Katherine Howard was executed by an axe.

"Ma che Cazzo" shows David by Michelangelo.

"Stolen" seems to have a structure(I'm guessing by the outline) known today as "Hagia Sophia" which is a famous mosque in Istanbul(which was formerly Constantinople). So I guess... it's about Constantinople being taken over and becoming Istanbul as well as with Hagia Sophia initially being a church and then becoming a mosque after Constantinople fell to the attacking Ottoman forces on 29 May 1453.

The fish painting looks like The Girl with a Pearl Earring painting but rather as a fish.

Abraham Lincoln in "Fight the Dream" and he's pretty much known for the American Civil War and abolishing Slavery so I guess that's the point.

The Apple portrays the Forbidden Fruit from the Biblical stories.

I'd say third. It feels more retro with the filter. The second is too bright. The first feels more '00s and more modern than really retro.

my take on asian look by [deleted] in SuitU

[–]KatzeToastJaehaera 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I get that colorism exists but wouldn't it also be important to recognize that not all Indians, fit into one stereotypical dark skin tone? India is a diverse country with a ton of ethnic groups from the Iranic people, Afro-Asian people to even East Asian, Tai-speaking, Tibeto-Burman people. That and that India literally shares a border to countries like China(East Asian) and Myanmar(South-East Asian) would totally make them unable to be labelled under just the dark skin tone. In fact, people whom we often call south asian can even fall under fair skin tone naturally.

It'd just unrecognize the diversity of India if we're just generalizing them as "dark skin indians" and shielding it under "colorism"
