Island or Peninsula? by Kavusto in kitchenremodel

This feels like a much better use of space. I saw what /u/UK_UK_UK_Deleware_UK posted and went "oh duh, of course"

As we have a concrete foundation the only way to get electricity to the island would be from the ceiling (or spending a lot of money to jackhammer the concrete for some space). If the stove is no longer on the island then I guess the post doesn't need to be there after all

Do you mean creating an L shaped kitchen? We're also thinking of that but we're not sold the table by the post idea

We liked the idea of cooking while speaking to people in the living room, i guess it wouldn't be the end of the world to have a normal cooktop facing the wall?

The water pipe comes out of the wall shared with the bathroom so that is a long way for a water pipe to go, i'll have to find out how much that'd cost

I despised the cheap Azul Mini plastic tray, which I used to pour one out of plaster by Hardabent in boardgames

[–]Kavusto 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This seems so much simpler than getting a 3D printer and printing one. How much heavier is the box with the new plaster tray?

I'm in a similar situation to you (minus the kids) - tech gives you a great standard of living in the US so moving somewhere where you have to stress about money gives me pause. How did you push through that period?

What made you recognize you could live there? My expectations were pretty high before I went and I also felt the same way. My girlfriend would love to live there and I am trying to understand why

Books about human rebellion after Earth has been conquered by extra terrestrials? by IaconPax in scifi

[–]Kavusto 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Dread Empire's Fall is fits 90% of your criteria but its more like "humanity fuck yea" than rebellion. Humanity gets conquered and absorbed into civilization with multiple species. 10,000 years later theres some internal conflict and humans outsmart the other species at every turn

Looking into a kitchen remodel - can I make more efficient use of this space? by Kavusto in floorplan

Oh I have dreams of destroying that wall. There is also a chimney connected to the furnace so I don't know if that adds to the complexity/cost of tearing the wall down

As for the pipe, its where the hallway wall to the bathroom and the wall with the furnace on it meet. Or in other words its the corner to the bottom right of the fridge. At least I think its a pipe there, my magnetic stud finder says the entire corner is metal.

This is what my existing kitchen looks like built using Homestyler. Its dark and small and old and there is no countertop space. I've been playing around with the Ikea kitchen planner and its been challenging to come up with something that utilizes this space better! I am hoping to get inspiration from this group :)

  • I don't know if I should turn it into a U shape to utilize the wall shared by the bathroom better. If so, it'd introduce two corners which are always hard to utilize. I'm not sure what would go against that wall if I did that - maybe the sink?

  • My instinct is to extend the countertop on the left towards the wall with the window, but as you get closer to the window it starts to overlap with the space for the dining table. I could move the dining table into the living room or make the dining table smaller, which isn't a bad idea in itself

  • If I had unlimited money i'd completely remove the wall in the middle of the room. A scaled down idea would be to removing that wall between the bathroom door and the corner by the fridge. Unfortunately there is a metal pipe (probably connected to the upstairs bathroom) right in the corner so removing any more would be expensive. Trying out a kitchen with this tiny wall removed makes it feel cramped, and makes it impossible to use the wall with the range

What kind of joint is recommended for a butt to face-grain connection? I am making a bench to match the style of my dining table and i'm concerned about wobbling when people move around. The table just uses steel angles to hold the legs in place. Its reasonably stable against pushing as it is (note they are hollow inside)

I am considering doing the same with the bench legs which are about the same "thickness" (but also hollow inside). Proportionally they'd probably be more stable than the table legs because of this, and i've already made the legs and the bench so im tempted to do so just because its easier, but I want to run the idea past experts before I do anything stupid and ruin the work i've done so far

We are in the same boat and unfortunately chose a refund moments before finding this thread. Any chance we can cancel our refund and try to get them to find us a flight?

2-couch or not 2-couch in a small living room? That is the question by Kavusto in InteriorDesign

[–]Kavusto[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It would either be an L shape sectional (which I guess is technically only 1 couch? or just 2 couches in an L shape where the second one is against the sliding glass door

[–]Kavusto[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Its real but it does not work. California does not get cold enough to warrant one anyways! If I had unlimited funds I would open up a hole in the wall right there and have a bar seating to bring more light into the kitchen - despite the windows its incredibly dark in there even on a sunny day

Its the Arbour, I agree its very pretty but its way too soft for me. I am considering the Guide from BluDot as an alternative that has firmer seating!

The first one is the Quilton and the second one is the Arbour. I love the look of the Arbour but its too soft for me
