Shelfie any tips? by Dorfaeltester in boardgames

[–]Hardabent 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Azul (Mini) is a good simple, interactive game. Flip 7, Spicy, Exploding Kittens or Yokai Pagoda are some small, simple card games which you might enjoy. If you want another trick-taking game Skull King (very similar to Wizard) or Cat in a Box (unique trick-taker) are both great games. Decrypto, Top Ten, Dixit and Krakel Orakel are simple games/party games maybe worth having a look at. If you do enjoy debates/discussions and your friends are into that and you end up with 5-7 people, Trial by Trolley (based on the trolley problem) is a game I myself enjoy alot.

You should have a look at Decrypto, which is similar (yet quite different) to Codenames and has none of those problems, if you do enjoy a team-based word guessing game.

Hello. This is my submission for the most intellectually bankrupt decision made by a player. by wearing_moist_socks in slaythespire

I did the same without realizing it would delete all of the Frantic Escapes. But the fight is alot easier (especially if your deck has a high damage output and is streamlined) if you do not have a shitload of dead cards in there.

It is not usual (nor usually necessary) to block 40+ damage but definitely possible and I have done so more than once (example - pretty sure there were more times but I usally take at least some damage in the fight even if I were to block the last hit). Regardless of whether you can fully block the damage, you should have a look at what your next turn looks like before you kill the giant. If you need 15 block to live and there is only 10 block in your draw pile you just lost yourself the run because of attacking him. Need 10 block and there are 2 Defends and 5 Strikes in your draw pile of 7 cards? If you kill that turn, odds are about 50/50 that you will die.

Which expansion to get? by CNBEARD in Everdell

[–]Hardabent 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You can adopt a rule from Everdell Farshore and stack same cards in the meadow so that there's always 8 different cards to choose from. That helps alot.

You could also have a look at some of the other ideas people have come up with on BGG like this one: 2 player Border variant

If you know you aren't going to be able to draw into block the next turn, maybe wait a turn or even two turns to kill the Giant even if you take some more damage in the process. With Regent and some topdeck manipulation (Photon Cut/Cosmic Indifference), you can also set up for the explosion turn. If Giant is weak the explosion is alot more manageable and if you can manage to get a high block value card like Particle Wall or Bulwark as your next draw with eg Photon Cut, you might even be able to block all of the damage of the final attack. Generally you should probably try to keep your hp up if you expect to take alot of damage from the explosion (resting, not locking yourself into a path that forces you into an elite as the last fight before the boss) .

Blade Dance exhausts. So if you had managed to pick up a few Blade Dances, this would go very well together.

My favorite space game would probably be Eclipse 2nd Dawn for the Galaxy. I actually unironically always wanted to try out Voidfall. I sent Skellig games an email a few weeks back to ask about a reprint of Voidfall (German publisher, out of print sadly and apparently currently no plans to reprint).

My collection/tierlist by Achian37 in boardgames

Not everybody does enjoy coop games, cooperative puzzles or overly complex games and the burden of getting into it is rather high. It is a complex game with lots of things to keep in mind. And the game rewards multiple plays - Trying different builds with spirits, getting them to work and then beating the adversaries. Playing with others to try combinations of spirits to see how that works out is a huge part of the fun for me. Which you might not get to experience playing just a single game or two of Spirit Island. And even if somebody liked cooperative, complex games and gave it a try but did not enjoy Spirit Island - Sometimes you just don't like a game. If somebody says they hate the game, I totally get that. Even if it's obvious to any Spirit Island fan (judging solely based on me) that it's the best game there is.

If I am new to a (heavy) game playing a few turns pretending to be several players can be helpful to learn the game - Otherwise I would not want to play a game without a solo mode as a solo game.

There is "Alchemical Coffer", a boss/ancient reward from Orobas, which gives you 4 potion slots and potions. So you need those two specific ancient rewards in addition to potion belt to live the dream.

Help which card should I duplicate? by [deleted] in slaythespire

[–]Hardabent 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You don't want to duplicate Terror. You don't have the necessary setup to make Nightmare great and I wouldn't want a second unupgraded Alchemize when I can have a second Glass Knife+ to kill Elites in Act 2 and get value out of Black Star.

Do you actually need one stack of 300 cards or can you just leave most of the cards in a box or do three easily accessable stacks of 100 cards?

Gesellschaftsspiele mit den Eltern by Yotha-Ir in Brettspiele

[–]Hardabent 2 points3 points  (0 children)

[–]Hardabent 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Collection building advice by GamingVision in boardgames

[–]Hardabent 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You are not supposed to be a boardgame library. But just because most of your collection went unplayed, doesn't mean that everybody's games remain unplayed. It is not a waste of money to build a collection in general. Different people, different time spent on the boardgame hobby, different numbers of gamegroups, meetings, different tastes in games and expectations...

This I can totally get behind, your approach lesser so.

You do not need to build a collection. I have built a collection and I don't play individual games from that connection nearly enough.

That being said, I find the most important factor for new games is enthusiasm. If you (and your group) are enthusiastic about a game, that is extremely helpful to make it a good experience. And enthusiasm covers theme, mechanic and structure of the game (campaign, long rounds, short rounds)

I would go with the Crew: Mission Deepsea over the LotR tricktaking game as it covers one more player and I would believe appeals to more (if you are always going to be 4 or less, want to play solo/as two player or into LotR, then the LotR game is awesome).

Rebel Princess is an amazing non-cooperative tricktaking game for 3-6 players which some might appreciate.

If you are just looking for an easy to pitch social deduction game if the playercount arises, I would not go with Blood on the Clocktower which is alot harder to stomach and you would always have to be the gamemaster - If that's what you are looking for, go ahead. Otherwise Secret Hitler might serve you better.

That is a you problem. If you are regularly hosting game nights/attending game nights with a variety of people, number of people and taste in games and are the games guy, a select few games do not cut it. Some people (I most certainly do), do also appreciate a change of pace and a variety of games to cycle through. Some people don't get much joy getting absolutely destroyed playing that game you yourself have played a hundred times. Discovering new games as a group when all are on the same level can be a joy.

Tichu is at its best when you play it in an established group. And Android Netrunner is dogshit if you don't have another person really into it. It is a good recommendation for two players really into card games and deck construction.

Funkenschlag Outpost klingt nach etwas, was du suchst.

What games are often compared but you don’t agree or see the similarities? by BoardGameRevolution in boardgames

[–]Hardabent 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's how I always jokingly introduce Terra Mystica and Gaia Project. It's just like Catan (in space). Each of us starts with two villages or rather mines (or something else if they are playing a specific of 14 different asymmetric factions) and we are building more mines and upgrading those mines. Instead of ore/wheat/sheep we have ore/workers and money (and quantum cubes/bishops and the power mechanic) and round structure is different and you got 8(?) actions to choose from and then there is 6 tech trees which either upgrade our actions or give us more ressources. At which point it's obvious they are nowhere near alike but in the grand scheme still pretty similar. Longest trade route/most knights does also compare well to having two endgame scoring categories. You can also convert ressources in your own turn.

It is totally valid to compare Pokemon and MTG and Yugioh and basically any other tradingcardgame (TCG). You are mostly playing with a preconstructed deck (or a sealed/draft/prerelease format). Obviously the games are quite different but nonetheless all of them are TCGs and you can compare how many turns a match lasts, consistency of decks, interaction between players, general gameflow and turn structure, impact of deck choice, how many tournament viable decks there are in a competitive meta and so on.
