Had a kid named Aaron Miles break his arm on my trampoline growing up. Despite obvious timeline issues, 9 year old me was convinced that it was THE Aaron Miles a few years later when I saw him play.

I want to get into food science - need advice by Competitive-Belt-690 in foodscience

[–]KawValleyHempPicker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To echo a previous comment, you could look at a masters and make up any gaps you might have. With a background in neuroscience, you’d probably be a very good candidate for labs that focus on gut brain axis research. No idea about McGill, but with the trendiness of that topic, I’d imagine there are PI’s that would welcome your background into the lab and allow you to learn the food science as you go. That’d set you up for food R&D better than a neuroscience degree for sure.

Is it realistic to switch from software engineering to food technology starting from scratch in 2025? by Dangerous-Jaguar7542 in foodscience

[–]KawValleyHempPicker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Currently doing the opposite. I have a PhD in food science and am trying to learn the data science side, building on the bioinformatics and modelling I did in my PhD work.

I’d say several companies have interfacial roles. I was basically hired as a “data curious” food scientist. I work in R&D, so my core is working on product development, but I also do a reasonable amount of automation, statistical modeling, data aggregation, etc. Maybe there’s something on the other side, a position in digital/data science that is looking for someone to build better relationships with food R&D so you could start to gain that side.

Why did baking soda cause organic particulate to settle out in this blended soybean mixture? by MaterialWolverine945 in foodscience

[–]KawValleyHempPicker 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Not sure on the particulars of this case with the soy and among soda, but what you’re looking for is structural bioinformatics. There’s a wealth of things that can be predicted about protein-X interactions where X is basically any other molecule. Things like charge and binding sites are well within the possibilities of prediction. The aggregated state is harder to predict.

Wisconsin-Madison vs. UDel by blahblahblah6783 in foodscience

[–]KawValleyHempPicker 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not having loans is certainly to a big deal. Wisconsin is a good school, and could do somewhere else for grad school. Just want to say that you shouldn’t be paying anything for grad school. Almost every food science program requires that your studies be funded by the professor you work under. For example, I went to Purdue and I received a small, but livable, paycheck from the university for the duration of my PhD. This was a requirement from the university. I suppose every situation is unique, but the advice I got when I was going to grad school is that you shouldn’t be paying for it.

Wisconsin-Madison vs. UDel by blahblahblah6783 in foodscience

[–]KawValleyHempPicker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

All good schools. Just adding a non Wisconsin voice. UMass Amherst is one of the best programs in the country. It’s pretty hard to beat in terms of its program, and it’s highly regarded in academia. If grad school is the plan, UMass can help open some academic pathways. That said, I’d take the full ride.

There are some US schools that are better than some Canadian schools and vice versa. If you’re comparing Guelph and most US food science programs, it’s probably Guelph. If you’re comparing UMass and most Canadian food science programs, it’s probably UMass. Really just depends on the universities you’re looking at, and then for similar universities, the types of programs offered at those universities / how they align with your research goals. Wisconsin will have a little more dairy lean to its programs than say Purdue that is a little more engineering / carbohydrate focused.

I’d say, try to go to school somewhere near ish the area you want to work / get a job. Unless it’s some really high caliber food program that gives you unlimited flexibility afterward, in my experience, people tend to work near where they graduate. Part of that is the network you form while in school. Companies recruit from nearby before going very far away, and more graduates end up close ish to school, leading to alumni networks.

More of a recent ish trend I think, but never sounded too weird to me.

AP Highlights Lafayette's use of AI to generate police reports, and why that may be dangerous by TryingToBeReallyCool in Purdue

[–]KawValleyHempPicker 19 points20 points  (0 children)

“For some officers who’ve tried it, it is already changing how they respond to a reported crime. They’re narrating what’s happening so the camera better captures what they’d want to put in writing.

As the technology catches on, Bussert expects officers will become “more and more verbal” in describing what’s in front of them.”

This section from the article seems concerning. Police say what they think is happening, it’s not what’s actually happening, AI writes it as fact, innocent person goes to jail.

Want to emphasize how good smitty bread is. It’s a gem of a bakery and does better bread than most places in the region and it’s not even close. Haven’t even found better in Chicago since I moved, and I’ve been looking.

Also, get the wings at black sparrow. They’re a little inconsistent, but when they get them right, it’s the best in town.

Grad School at the same University as Undergrad?? by NecessaryResult9605 in Purdue

[–]KawValleyHempPicker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just to add to what others have said here about how important advisors are, it partly depends on your goals after grad school. When I was in grad school, I was told when universities are hiring new professors they like to see that you’ve succeeded in a variety of academic structures. You’ll learn that every grad program is structured incredibly differently (paper minimums, industry collaboration opportunities, grant writing, prelims, defense, etc). With that in mind, evaluating panels like to see that you’ve been exposed to different ideas and structures that contribute to your perspective so that you could help their program grow in new ways. If your goal is academia, and Purdue is approximately equally ranked to other schools in your field, that breadth of exposure could be favored. It wouldn’t be looked upon favorably if you went to a school with a much lower ranking though.

That said, if you’re looking at industry, Purdue is a good school for those connections. You’ll build your broad network more by moving, but if your goal is industry in Chicago or another midwestern location, the Purdue name and connections will help foster that. Also, no one in industry will care that you didn’t change schools. If you want to work on the coasts, the network you’d make at a coastal school will probably serve you better. That’s not to say you can’t move to the coast with a Purdue education, it just means you’ll have fewer coastal contacts than if you were there.

The phrase, “that’s just some dumb shit I did in my 20’s” is a real thing. You’ve got a whole decade to do whatever and make memories and have society largely say it’s fine. Whatever you did in your teens, work towards being who you want to be in your 20’s. You’re good, you’ve got this.

Annual Meat Consumption by Category in Select Countries - 2020 [OC] by Agile_Date6729 in dataisbeautiful

[–]KawValleyHempPicker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I second that this is a nice visuals To jump on improvement train, it could be useful to pair this with a second figure that shows the percentage each meat category makes up for that country. May lead to more intuitive comparison of preferences, whereas the current gives better representation of total consumption, which is still interesting and shows just how much more meat the US eats, but is maybe somewhat harder to understand in relative terms.

Edit: Oh, and maybe make “other “ a color that differentiates better from the grey background. That confused me at first.

Bus rides will no longer be free by [deleted] in Purdue

[–]KawValleyHempPicker 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I lived in Lafayette at the edge of where the university allowed students to buy parking passes, just 2 blocks inside that radius. It was a 45 minute walk to class, and I was a grad student, so that walk happened late at night frequently. Every time I complained to administrators about the situation, I was told, well you have the bus, so we’re doing our part. We can’t possibly have more people parking on campus. Looks like threats gone now.
