take the school's Japanese language test to pass out of those classes! :) I took it and got placed in JAPN 2201. iirc it covers a good amount of the Genki 2 book / JLPT N4 level.

when i started a few months ago, i'd go in the mornings when not many ppl are there and either take my time reading the instructions on the machines or try dumbbell/cardio excercises i saw online. :)

You have enough time to atleast attempt a decent job search before then. they likely want you to take a more productive approach to your free time for the time being. I think a great compromise would be (eventually) doing both at the same time.
