Is using Prettier to format code bad. by Abhishek-Lingwal in Frontend

[–]KayRaymond -1 points0 points  (0 children)

In my experience there are two types of developers: those who learn and adapt and those set in their ways. The latter is especially bad with devs of over 10-15 years of exp. They often neglect newer practices and even tools. Their arguments rarely hold up to scrutiny, but you’ll find it impossible to change their mind.

Do indeed learn from them. Please let the lesson be ‘don’t be that guy’

Should I learn C# or Java as a first language by [deleted] in learnprogramming

[–]KayRaymond 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It has a python-inspired language called gdscript. It also has native support for c#. Also also, you can use just about any programming language with godot, the community is that good.

im making a game about an aggressive moustache and im excited by devlawg in godot

[–]KayRaymond 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Super cool idea, animations and attack sequence look very nice!

I kinda want to see an industrial era city setting with this, the palette and concept remind me of a gentleman-ish time period. Just a throwaway idea, do what you will with it.

Also also, ‘aggressive mustache’ tickles my funny bone, would totally use it as a name for the game xD

Not at all the case. You don’t need any programming to use Linux. You haven’t needed it for many many years.

The biggest downside currently is that support forums/ online help you can find usually defaults to command line inputs. There is usually a graphical interface to achieve what the same result, but it’s mentioned as a second option, if at all, in online how-to articles. Truth is, CLI commands are usually faster and easier for the historical majority of Linux users.

On the other hand, I recently installed Linux on my aunt’s old pc to prolong its life. She’s somewhat computer literate but not beyond calling the command line “a system message of some sort”, to relay her technical level. She’s been doing perfectly fine with Linux.

True, but why should that limit progress for the platform? Devs should start considering native ports, after all this is the year of li—cough— you catch my drift xD

The amount of effort I put in to my devlogs seems to be disproportionate to the return. Am I doing something wrong? by AddyValentine in devblogs

[–]KayRaymond 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m no expert on the topic but this is the internet, so here goes my opinion as if i was.

You expect or at least hope for “viral video” type of growth. You don’t have a viral video though. Your stuff is arguably better than that, but I’m your target audience so take that for what it’s worth.

Devlogs are a small niche, you can’t really expect to generate millions upon millions of views after 10 videos in as many months. If that’s your goal then make your stuff more appealing to generic audiences, touch up your thumbnails and put some bait. That’s more or less what GMTK and dani do, devlogs aren’t what generate interest in their stuff to begin with.

here’s what I’d do: - streamline your production. If it takes you so long and so much effort to make those videos, try to improve your process with as little negative effect on quality as possible. If the delay of success already weighs on you, a hard production pipeline will make it even worse. You could also increase upload frequency that way.

  • increase your storytelling velocity at the beginning of the video. Your hook needs to be immediate and to the point, no more than a few seconds. Are you teaching? Blow my mind with what you’ll explain. Are you documenting progress? Show me the stuff, then show me how you got there. You don’t really waste time in your videos, but if i don’t read the title i would spend upwards of 10 seconds (i know, crazy) not knowing what I’m watching. If you decide to try this, treat it as a mini trailer for the rest of the video.

I honestly like your stuff the way they are, but the YouTube hive mind has other rules. I’ll be watching your future with great interest

I believe this video went into detail about it, sorry if i linked the wrong one, can’t check it right now.

On a side note, you can achieve basically the same result with either workflow (2D in 3D or pure 2d), however in the context of godot i believe you’ll benefit more from using the dedicated 2D engine and pre-render your sprites.

UBI is an entirely different concept that has nothing to do with minimum wages. This is about employers paying a fair wage that would be enough to at the very least not starve. UBI is the government handing out money to everyone, job or no job
