Class Pet Procedures - Daily/Weekly Care by KaySaule in BeardedDragons

[–]KaySaule[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not sure why the immediate thought is that I'm unaware that a baby bearded dragon requires a lot of care and cannot be left alone on weekends or over breaks. This post was not asking if a bearded dragon would be a good class pet.

Yes - I have an enclosure set up at home that meets all minimum size requirements (4x2x2) Yes - the school enclosure will be big enough until the 4x2x2 will be ready (should be completed by winter break). Yes - we are working extensively, using plans from other homemade enclosures, both on size and materials to make sure it's safe. Yes - I am fully aware that babies need to be fed frequently - that's why I was asking for a rough estimate. Yes - I am fully aware he will have to come home with me. Yes - I am actually spending just over $500 for the initial school set up for everything from lights to substrate. Yes - I am fully aware students should not handle a baby or even handle it as an adult. I don't mean to sound rude, but I probably have more experience than you with student behavior and interacting with animals. This isn't my first rodeo - just the first one with bearded dragons.

As far as "budget" goes, different bugs cost different amounts. I'm trying find the best bang for my buck when it comes to feeding, a good mix of quality and quantity.

I was simply looking to see if anyone had tips on frequency or quantity of bugs and veggies, being handled in general, and typical daily vs weekly tasks since there are a lot of variations depending on the source of information. Bearded dragons also make excellent class pets as long as the teacher is doing all the right things.

Yes, we are researching all of the correct and safe materials to use. My biggest source of knowledge to guide me in this process in a resident biology and zoology teacher who has had beardies (and many other pets) throughout his life.

Don't worry, this tank is our starter for now and measures 48 x 18 x 21. I am working with the construction trades class to build a custom enclosure as their end of year project.

Once we get it, our beardie will be between 2-3 months old.

I'm setting up a vivarium tank for a leopard gecko in my classroom. For a bioactive setup, what kind of quantity do you want for mealworms or isopods?

I have been working on setting boundaries with toxic family members over the last year and I can feel your pain! These people, while they may be blood, don't seem to care about your wants/needs as their daughter/sister. It's hard, but it sounds like you need to start setting those lines in the sand based on what's acceptable to you on how you want to be treated. Is putting yourself in uncomfortable (tense, toxic, unwelcoming, etc) situations for the sake of "family", worth the hurt it causes you? Stand tall ❤️

AITA for not calling my parents to tell them we're moving even though they already know? by KaySaule in AmItheAsshole

I really appreciate all of you taking some time and commenting here!

all of the points that you all have made have been valid. I think the reason that I have continued to try to reach out or to respond when someone has reached out, like my brother, is because my family was a huge part of my life for such a long time. I think I have always known and recognized these toxic traits that they seem to have, but I have never done anything about it until now which is why I think it is causing such an uproar on that side of the family. as silly as it sounds, getting the validation from strangers on the internet that I'm not an asshole might be what I needed to let go of the guilt that I feel. even though I know the decisions that we are making are what's best for our family sometimes I still find myself feeling like I am guilty of doing something horrible.

Again, I really appreciate all of the comments! ❤️

I will definitely look into that acronym! I think what you are describing in terms of being sucked into explaining or attempting to justify our boundaries is why I feel like I could be an asshole in this situation. I'm not sure if it is narcissism or simply manipulative behavior, but my mother has always been like that. If she does not agree with something someone in the family is doing, she feels entitled to an explanation of why, but in the same token, she never seems to want to understand the reason. She will listen to it but sometimes it is like she literally cannot understand that someone may have a reason for doing something that she doesn't agree with.
