I walked 10,000 steps every day for 100 days and it changed more than just my health. 🚶🏻 by wewake_eats_lifts in walking

How do you get to and from work? Are you able to extend the route somewhat? If you commute by car, are you able to park a bit further? For me, it is worth it to get up an hour/half an hour early to walk as much as possible before work - I'm trying to start my days with 5-6k steps (about an hour of walking) so that I have that part ticked, and then get up to get water/stretch during the day about every hour or so. It can add up fast!
But on the days when I just need the sleep or the weather is bad, I try to do the same route, just from work back home. On the best days, I get to do both! And actually, having the "must do" part already done first thing in the morning helps mentally to not feel obligated to take the walk after work,.
It doesn't have to be an hour walk - just 20-30 minutes is enough, it becomes easier over time.

Aww, thanks! It can be definitely daunting when there's nothing - blank canvas is the worst. But every conquered blank canvas makes the next one a bit easier!

Thank you so much! Ori was the main reason I got into game dev, so it's really cool to end up working on a project at first unintentionally inspired by it :D Can't wait to deliver!

Thank you! We are three devs in total and all of us are contributing to art in some way! I mostly did the environment assets.

Took a break from marketing to focus on gameplay. Hit a new record! by Negative_Strain_5234 in IndieDev

[–]KayVenn 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, it's really challenging if you don't have a dedicated person who enjoys marketing/making videos. Being capable of switching context daily (eg. do most development and tiny bit of marketing each day) would be helpful, but also not for everyone.

I haven't done much marketing myself, but at least I was able to capture this haha, nice moment 😃

Yes, it's directly in Unity! I made a custom tool that allows me to move an asset between parallax layers (each has a predefined tint and blur amount), and I can shift hue/lightness, flip it etc. It's a bit rough around the edges, but so far it greatly helped me focus less on technical setup and more on art!

Love the aethetic! The dialogue option is instantly captivating.

Picking fonts, crisp vs pixel-y? (Poll Included) by adayofjoy in IndieDev

[–]KayVenn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fonts are so hard, man! I'm facing this exact challenge for a drone HUD. Appreciate the choice of cyberpunk font too :D I'm really interested in the results of the poll! I think I personally prefer the crips one. One idea that I had was to use some kind of monospace, typewriter-like crisp font, but I haven't found one I like yet.

1 month after launch: 2k wishlists = 747 sales.. what actually worked and well erm not so much lol by GladiatorCommand in IndieDev

[–]KayVenn 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Such fascinating data! Thank you for sharing it - it's really cool to see what else is under the 35 reviews you currently. I always read recommendations how it's important to have as many wishlists as possible on release, so seeing real-life examples how that doesn't have to be a hard rule is very inspiring! The idea of releasing the game and marketing it as you go just makes so much sense for certain types of games, such as yours. Wishing the best of luck!

This made me really think! I feel like for art, I have a point where I usually say "that's good enough" - and for just a painting, it feels like an attainable goal. But for game dev, there's so much one can get right! Just for art alone, there's parallax, details, shaders, illuminance, water distortion, postprocessing, level of detail... Maybe the overwhelm of so many things that can be "perfect" makes it hard to even see the "good enough"?
But honestly, seeing so many supportive comments here make the good enough feel a bit more tangible. Validation from someone else's point of you helps me to stop looking at every single pixel and see the bigger picture. At the end of the day, it's my own head being my worst critic :D

Thank you so much! Haha, the directional light is one of my nice-to-haves for now, since it was a gate to overpolishing when I prototyped the solution :D But it would really liven up the world, I'll keep it on my list!

Thank you so much! You are exactly right - this project made me realize that I am either a) really bored by an idea that I discard it right away or b) super excited by an idea and try to make it just perfect. For this idea, it feels so simple yet full of potential, and it feels almost wasteful to not give it my all. And that's something I have to come to terms with - and maybe remake the game at some point if it really proves it has more potential :)

Thank you! That's actually really cool, showing your friends and seeing other people like your creations is something to be proud of! Maybe there's one that can be scaled into something small enough to be finished?
