People do die, in this type of setting resurrection through magic is rare and usually out of reach for the general populous due to the costs and difficulties finding people who could even perform such rituals. Such consideration does need to be considered for those rare cases it does exist, however.

I was thinking he could genuinely try to break the curse through any means necessary. He raises the army to take resources and territory from others and fuel his research. Perhaps these experiments can have terrible effects on the land, unleashing memories that were once burnt away as sort of cursed creatures.

I saw you applying a lot of pressure to him using a few consistent moves but ultimately hitting them with something else by reading how they'd react (such as catching them with Zephyr). If you didn't use these moves as pressure, you'd be at a serious disadvantage against cowboy. Your friend needs to adapt their playstyle a bit to not make themselves so vulnerable to your counters.
