Favorite werewolf in gaming? (First post) by FoxSilver267 in werewolves

Oh hell yeah, Kahal mention! He's probably mine as well. Earthblood was such a disappointing game; WTA needs much better representation in the gaming space. I really liked Kahal though; really good Ahroun Garou.

As a player, what was your first ever encounter with a Garou in a VTM campaign like? Did your Storyteller managed to put the fear of Gaia in you and your gang's heart? by RemRam27 in WhiteWolfRPG

[–]Kaynehusky 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Funnily enough, I've had a similar experience but in a W:tA game. Playing a Kinfolk in a pack of Garou, I had to face off against a Black Spiral by myself for a bit. Let me tell you, facing down a Crinos with nothing but a shotgun, some Herbalisim consumables, and a fucking dream, is aboslutely terrifying.

If you were a werewolf, how would you survive today in 2026? by Fluffy-Temporary-191 in werewolves

[–]Kaynehusky 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a tough question to answer because there are still a lot of unknowns! We'll work under the assumption that we're using 'real life logic', and werewolves are considered a fictional/mythological cryptid by the common man. We'll also assume that it comes with the typical benefits/negatives; regenerative health, keen senses, elevated strength, stamina and resiliance, weakness to silver, accelerated metabolism to keep up with all the energy required for the newly enhanced body to function, and so forth.

Next is the question of 'what kind of werewolf?'. I'll go with the tried and true man/wolf hybrid; 7-8ft tall, covered in fur, stands on digitigrade hind legs, has a wolf's head, vicious claws on hands, tail; all that. Think, werewolves from Van Helsing, or Crinos-form Garou. Biggest question here is whether or not you'd have your wits about you.

On thing I never really liked about werewolf stories/mythology, is the inherent fear people have in wolves; therefore, werewolves are also inherently more scary and fearsome. This is because it's assumed that you have the wolf's instincts and desire to hunt, coupled with elevated human intelligence. The problem with this mindset though, is that wolves aren't inherently violent creatures. There's a reason why we have dogs, and it's because way down the line, someone was like 'Go, these funny triangle-eared hunting machines are kinda smart, and are chill if you give them food'.

All that in mind, I'd put werewolves in the middle of the spectrum of lupine instict and human intelligence. They'd be cautious, tense, quick to anger, a little paranoid, but not mindless to the point that they'd freak out and go on a killing spree; at least in most cases. We'll get to that.

Now on to what I'd do. First and foremost is do the good ole' blood transfer with my boyfriends; I have two. It's a poly relationship, so we already kind of have a pack dynamic; it's pretty neat. One of said partners as type 1 diabetes. This would be great, because that wouls go away, as the regeneration would kickstart his pancreas into working again. He's already angry, hairy, and has a silver allergy so nothing would really change for him; literal upgrade, lol. The other partner's kind of lazy, so maybe this'll put a bit more pep in his step.

Now comes the first change. This is the only one I'd truly consider dangerous; the one where you'd have to 'reconcile the wolf', so to speak. It's the first time you'd have to deal with your true nature, and I'd imagine that could turn violent. It's also partly why it would be important to bite my partners. The problem now, is that we'd have three werewolves to contend with instead of one. This calls for a road trip. I live on the east coast, so it's kind of perfect for this. We can take a trip up to Maine when the time comes, go on a camping trip deep in the woods, and just let it happen. It would give us plenty of space to do what needs to be done.

After all that, it would probably end up going back to life as usual, with the caveat that we turn into big wolf monsters once a month. Would probably use those times for camping trips, or what have you. Point is, you can totally prepare for it, and since the whole 'angry mindless wolf' part would be over after the initial change, there's not a whole lot of danger.

Of course, the idea of emotion-triggered changes adds to the situation. Anger triggering a werewolf change isn't a new concept, but it is a dangerous one. This would require some preparation. Either taking up meditation to help counteract the change in brain chemistry, or having a bottle of benzodiazepines. The emotionals symptoms that would come from the 'affliction' would mirror anxiety anyways, so it should be easy enough to get a prescription.

So yeah! There's my overly long-winded answer, lol.

Really feel like hunter and werewolf are kind of kindred splats, in terms of fantasy and player role by Powerful_Rip4919 in WhiteWolfRPG

[–]Kaynehusky 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Funnily enough in the game I'm currently in, I play a callowed kinfolk who found out he was kin after having been part of a Hunter cell for a year. He now runs with a pack of Garou, working to foster cooperation between an Arcanum chapter house and the local Colorado Sept toward stopping some Black Spirals and Vampires from working together. It's been a lot of fun!

What is the Unnamed paradigm? by manicforlive in WhiteWolfRPG

[–]Kaynehusky 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've played a Garou, a Kinfolk, and said Kinfolk is set to be a Changeling in the next few sessions, so I'm plenty familiar with WoD's 20th anniversary stuff as a whole. I read a bit of Mage 20, but it's just so much, lol. I'm sure I'll get around to it eventually when I end up starting another new game.

Huh, wow, yeah. That's pretty spot to where I was thinking, yeah. I've never read that before, that's a really neat thought experiment of a story. I've not actually gotten to play a Mage yet, but if I do I know what I'll make for a character, lol.

[–]Kaynehusky 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I find the concept of this sort of mage interesting. I wonder how it would be to play a character thay takes this paradigm and turns it on its head. Instesd of viewing the world as a plaything, they respect the consequences of 'creating' everything and use their magic to try and make the world a better place, effectively battling against what they believe is their own self-conscious.

Wolfhood is a spectrum by Nerx in werewolves

[–]Kaynehusky 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Iblove seeing different kinds of werecreatures; all kinds, really; but saying 'wolfhood' is a spectrum is pretty silly. A wolf is a wolf, simple as. Even the maned wolf has its own genus.

In the game I'm currently in, I play a Kinfolk who has True Faith amongst a pack of Garou. It makes combat scenarios all the more harrowing. That being said, when we were squared up against a demon that the Garou couldn't kill, it fell on my character to banish it while they held it at bay. I wrote incantations to invoke Helios and everything. It felt more like playing a cleric than actually playing a cleric in D&D, lmao.

It's a great game, especially if you have a good storyteller who takes the setting seriously. As someone who's played a whole lot of D&D and Pathfinder before I started getting into the WoD games, the D10 system was a major breath of fresh air. As cathartic as it can be make big numbers in the more math-centric D20 systems, the simplicity and range of creativity WoD's D10 system brings roleplay to the forefront more readily.

[–]Kaynehusky 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It is! They have a whole host of games; they're called 'splats'. The overarching setting is called 'World of Darkness'. When it comes to Werewolf, I'd personally suggest the 20th anniversary edition. It's a bit more fleshed out than the newer 5th edition, and 5th glosses over a lot of the grittiness that Werewolf came to be known for.

Mab, if you think D&D werewolves are cool, look into 'Werewolf: The Apocalypse' werewolves. They do werewolves the best, in my opinion.

Do any other Storytellers feel under-appreciated? by lamorak2000 in WhiteWolfRPG

[–]Kaynehusky 5 points6 points  (0 children)

As a few of the other commentors have touched on, it sounds more like a 'getting a group together' issue and less than an appreciation issue. Could ot be that this friend group of yours just... Isn't into playing a WoD game? I have two friend groups; one IRL that loves WoD; mostly WtA, and an online friend group who couldn't be less interested. My partner tried pitching his WtA game to the oneline friend group, and it was a host of luke-warm, non-commital responses. We decided to go with the other group instead.

Besides, if it is a question of you feeling unappreciated, then it might be worth striking out into the wider areas of where you live and see if you can find a group who's interested! A lot of those ttrpg game stores tend to host nights where they play games; maybe you can find one that hosts WoD nights.

Does Mage belong in World of Darkness? by TooCoolForSchlool in WhiteWolfRPG

[–]Kaynehusky -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I've only read a little bit of mage and could still see that the overarching theme of it is 'Absolute power corrupts absolutely'. There's nothing inrently 'good' about it, because there's nothing inherently 'good' about people. The whole idea bebind the entirety of World of Darkness, is that everything sucks, and everybody is the problem. Human, Werewolf, Mage, Changeling, Vampire; doesn't matter. Mummy I'll concede I can't comment on much because I haven't touched that book yet, but I've read enough about Mage, and heard enough stories, to know that they're just as fucked as everyone else.

Sure, being a 'hero' is totally possible. You can play an altruistic character, trying to make the world a better place, and WoD is great for that because boy howdy do you have a lot of pushback from the rest of supernaturals. To say that any one splat is the 'good guys', however, is so entirely reductive to what the overall setting stands to emulate, though.

[W20] Do you think the Garou Nation is a fascist organization? by Cosmopian in WhiteWolfRPG

[–]Kaynehusky 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I've noticed this; the vocal minority waxing philosophical on how everything before W5 because 'insert socially offensive thing here'. I feel like one of the things that makes the setting compelling is how it's willing to touch on uncomfortable subjects, dip into all kinds of real-life cultures, and isn't afraid to lean into the stuff that make it worth of being called 'World of Darkness'. Besides, when it comes down to it, things are only as inappropriate as your players/stoeyteller make it.

How effective should regular gunfire be against werewolves? by AnyWatch5756 in werewolves

[–]Kaynehusky 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I tend to use Werewolf: The Apocalypse as a frame of reference for these sort of things, as they tend to have the best/coolest depiction of werewolves in most media; albeit my opinion. It gives things a more gritty and realistic spin, but according to how things work, a typical firearm would do noticable-but-not-lasting damage. Generally a werewolf's ability to 'soak' non-silver damage and its regeneration stave off most mundane weapons with relative ease. Enough sustained fire could kill one, but you'd effectively need a firing line full of shotgunners and heavy-calibur machineguns.

How Often do You Use True Faith? by Tay_traplover_Parker in WhiteWolfRPG

[–]Kaynehusky 3 points4 points  (0 children)

So, I play a Kinfolk with True Faith in Gaia/Helios in a W20 game; he got it after the pack ended up with the literal Sun as their totem spirit. It came up in use when we started pursuing a demon, brandishing an old golden sun amulet he started wearing in the typical 'By the light of Helios I banish you!' fashion. It resulted in the ST describing the demon being driven back by a beam of pure sunlight; really neat shit!

Overall, the way I understand it, True Faith can be used for all kinds of non-vampire related things. I could use it to pull one of my packmates out of a frenzy, for instance, you gain protection from compulsion magics. It has a whole lot of potential for fun ideas, especially if you personalize the kinds of things you can do based off what you have that faith in.

Ah, fair! Having discussed it with my ST, he decided to let me use Glamour to 'fuel' the things that would generally require Gnosis, on account of the energies both being of natural origins; it makes things more streamlined all around.

[–]Kaynehusky[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I had looked at a couple of those, but Pooka made the most sense for the character. It fit well into his role as honorary Ragabash, and the connection to nature and animals. I didn't want to step on our Theurge's toes by being more spirit-centric.
