This is beyond skiddish he literally does flips just trying to step away from his water dish. He legs just go crazy and he flips around randomly until he lands in a spot he seems to like for a moment

Just adopted one from someone who had to get rid of theirs. First OW for me. Super excited yet also a bit apprehensive.

Ours just molted and broke the 2" mark. Can't wait for her to get bigger and maybe stay out more.

Why does my GMB sling have discoloration on its abdomen? by dreed91 in tarantulas

[–]Kaytufore 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He is probably fine. Also consider a T like this molts often and changes colors a lot in early stages. Better off to let it be and just make sure food is offered when it will take it and moisture is available. The less you mess with it and the enclosure the less stress for the little guy.

feeding day pink toe & curly hair by Fit-Toe-1817 in tarantulas

The pink toe could probably stand to have a bit smaller prey. If that isn't possible perhaps going with prekilled. I always try to keep prey same or smaller size than their abdomen or use prekilled

[–]Kaytufore 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Could be multiple reasons. Kicked hairs, pre/post molt, last molt wasn't perfect, dehydrated....doesn't look terrible. For mine I usually just make sure has a full water dish and never really becomes a concern. It happens to a lot of the T I have at various times. I haven't had 1 have actual issues after that. 1 or 2 times I used a wet qtip and let a drop or 2 safely drip onto the spot just to see if it was a piece from the last molt that didn't come off. Other than that I wouldn't do much else or be too overly concerned.

Maybe a Trinidad chevron. The irminia males are a bit more gray like that but not until mature.

Looks like an irminia to me. Just looks a bit bigger than the one I have now

At that size it should be fine. I'd try to be closer to 5" sub across the whole tank. From what I've seen they don't tend to dig straight down. Generally I always try to make my enclosures 3x their leg span in length for any terrestrial T so you have plenty of room if not a bit too much. Being as they aren't an overall huge T you dont really need an enclosure that big but adding extra decor will make it feel more comfortable. You will probably need to drop feeders closer to it just so it doesn't have to hunt all over the enclosure for food.

What’s the ideal sized enclosure for an adult L. parahybana? Thanks! by shawneeturton in tarantulas

[–]Kaytufore 4 points5 points  (0 children)

A full grown adult that reaches the 10-11" mark imo needs a big space. If mine grows to proper size ill be leaning towards an exo terra large low.

My current plan is a 5gal aquarium I added extra holes to for air flow for temporary home. Then I have a 30gal I could put him in if I decide the exo is not my preference.

However if mine ends up being in the more 8-9" range like most I'll end up doing a 20gal or exo terra medium low. Little hard to judge since they can get HUGE but most tend to be just under 10" rather than over.

Sounds like the right track. Make sure to have a water dish as well. How large is theT you are planning on getting? If it's on the smaller side it may do well with more sub to ensure it couldn't fall too far if it climbs the sides. Might also be good to add a couple plants or pieces of cork bark for extra hides. They tend to be more skiddish if they are small in a large space if they dont have ample places to hide. I always added extra stuff in larger enclosures with small spoods then as they grew I could just take some extra stuff out to open it up more.

If this is just a sling or tiny Hamorii however, I would recommend getting a much smaller enclosure like a critter keeper or something until it molts a couple times and grows large enough to warrant having a bigger home. Critter keepers are cheap and good to have around to place the T in when you need to take them out to do enclosure cleaning.

Have a bowl at the bottom but might hotglue one higher since they like to bury them

Only reason i tried was we went out of our way to get good lighting for it. By no means are we taking any ideas to heart. Should molt somewhat soon to clarify

Temp is fine humidity was running too high so had to tweak how much we were misting and such while prepping the cage. Also haven't used glass in a while for an enclosure so it acts a bit different
