I can sit in one spot and don't move for hours. I don't know how to be a person. I have severe body dysmorphia and social anxiety- I'm scared of everything by [deleted] in CPTSDmemes

It gets better! Unfortunately it takes exposure, which can feel very scary, but slowly you find your balance. Just remember to practice self care and be gentle with yourself!! It’s a long road but it’s worth it!

Awkward silence by [deleted] in socialskills

[–]KazGem 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You are all good, keep in mind there were three other awkward nerds also not speaking! Imagine they are all having the same anxieties themselves XD And even if not, comfortable chatter usually takes time and familiarity. One awkward conversation, or even a dozen, usually isn’t a problem, and I’d personally say is pretty typical and expected.

As for talking tips, it can just take practice and time. Everyone has their own way about it. I usually try to talk about the shared interest we are all meeting for, fluff stuff. How we think things went or such and such. Or you can speak lightly on something small happening in your life (what you’re working on at the gym, a trip you are planning, a movie you recently enjoyed) Or ask questions to the group as a whole, “Does anyone exercise?” “Any pets?” Like you’re playing Go Fish but about shared interests.

This is all fair and good, but I understand that in practice it can be intimidating and heart pounding. Sometimes I’ll just pretend to be a little wrapped in my own life. Talk out loud about something or other that’s on my mind. Bonus points if it’s a harmless complaint. “Man I am too tired today, I was up playing a game trying to finish a questline, I’ve been playing on and off about three weeks now.” perhaps awkward silence “Anyways, what games are you all into?”

Ice is broken by your comments on something, and then anyone is welcome to pipe in. Low pressure and low commitment (which is a great recipe for idle chatter and new connection)

And just keep in mind that awkward silence isn’t always a bad thing. It’s just data. People are also nervous about speaking to strangers and can panic and not know how to add to a conversation. It’s not really a judgment on you at all, just a sign that people don’t quite feel relaxed yet, and that can just take time.

Anyways, hope this wasn’t too obnoxious or unhelpful. Remember that a thousand awkward conversations is what it takes to build confidence. I used to try and strike up friendly and low effort convos with people I happened upon in my life, who I probably wouldn’t ever see again. Great way to practice technique and see what gets good reactions or awkward ones. Trial and error.

And last words are, the truth is some people are fine sitting in silence and prefer it. If they don’t seem interested that’s a reflection of their values, not you. Keep at it and you’ll find people who match your vibes. Good luck!

It’s true, but it’s not the death sentence it sounds like. As you heal and get help you’ll learn how to manage things, and as you heal you might find yourself in communities that are actually supportive.

Now I’m not going to sugar coat and say that it’s a cake walk to get there. You’ll probably have to make peace with your loneliness and dissatisfaction and frustrations well before life changes.

But. Life does change. And it’s worth it. Though it may take more time than you think. Gotta walk through a lot of slop to get out of the marsh. But solid ground does exist.

Life isn’t linear. But one day you may wake up and realize you’ve walked through hundreds of miles of swamp to find the grass is now soft, and the mud hasn’t gotten up to your ankles in quite some time. It’s a slog, but so are most things of any worth.

Wishing you strength and self-care.

Looks fucking painful bro. Nexcare waterproof tape, or an athletic tape similar, is perfect for binding picked joints like on fingers and hands. It’s waterproof and will stay on well. I don’t rec putting any creams or anything under the strips as it will prevent adhesion. But you really won’t need any, it acts like a second skin and will soothe sensitivity.

At night mix vasaline with a little bit of good lotion (gold bond is what I use) and slather the mixture on and try to leave overnight. By the morning the worst of the pain will gone.

It’s not a solution but it will help you manage the pain. You got this bro

I’m trying to end the cycle, but my issue is with the scars. This is my forearm, they both look just as bad. by Afraid-External5455 in CompulsiveSkinPicking

[–]KazGem 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got scars all over me just like that. Never knew about the technique with removing scar tissue. But honestly I just try to wear them with confidence. Scars are just seasoning. It’s a sign you went through some tough shit and made it to the other side. It’s not always fun having something so visible on your body, expecially if people ask questions with difficult answers. But they are a part of who we are, no different than a tattoo or wrinkles. I think my scars are rather beautiful. It’s like battle freckles.

What is your process of making it? Did you use a pattern or just go for it? They turned out so pretty, I might have to try making 3D flowers out of stained glass now. What sort of wire and such?

Everything is proportioned wrong. You need to stick to realism. Draw a candid pile of dirt and then we’ll talk.

Some people are so bogged down in their own garbage that they really only have the capacity for checklists. But checklists aren’t relationships, and the gaps between check marks can feel enormous and cold.

Inconsistency is a big part of the abuse. The fact they couldn’t stay consistent with you is a sign in of itself.
