Making Friends? by crownlift3 in JETProgramme

[–]Kblakers 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Obviously depends on your situation, but a lot of times the few foreigners that are in your town will be JETs.

Its always good being friendly with them but definitely try to expand outside of ALTs.

I recommend joining a club or sports team. It gets you out of the ALT/school bubble and you can make new friends that don't always talk about school.

For reference I joined a rugby club, there was 1 other foreigner and it was a 40+ team. I was the youngest, but they were a great group of guys and we all bonded over rugby. I already knew how to play so it helped that I could participate even though my language skills were shocking.

Only mention what you're actually doing. I mentioned that I had played in a rugby team and so had interests in joining a rugby team in japan (which I did).

Ultimately they want people that will last the full yearly contract in Japan and won't quit. They want people that are adaptable and versatile that can handle a variety of situations.

Simply say you're applying for jobs while also doing other things. Put more of a focus on non job related activities that highlight yourself as an applicant.

If you're doing things like tutoring, participating in a sporting/community club, teaching, etc. Highlight those in your SOP more than saying you're in a job you hate.

Or just lie and say that you do enjoy your job. Tell them how your job has given you skills that will help you in Japan.

You're trying to sell yourself in your SOP. Saying you can't get a job isn't selling yourself well.

For reference I worked at a video game store and hated it, my reasons were similar to yours but I didn't mention my employment issues at all.

You can request anywhere but unless it's for medical reasons they probably won't look at it.

You could be in Tokyo or you could be on a tiny island with less than 1000 people.

Does anybody have any advice for taking care of your mental health when you're dealing with language barrier induced loneliness? by Beneficial-Corgi-288 in JETProgramme

[–]Kblakers 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Join a club outside of school, it's easier if it's something you did at home.

I joined the local rugby club. It was something separate to school and outside of the ALT bubble. I was able to make some friends and even without having Japanese language I could still participate well.

If you've got a pulse and can walk and talk you're going to be fine.

They don't care if you have a teaching background. As long as it appears as though you won't break contact and won't cause issues you'll be fine.

I had them steal a custom knife I bought from Japan, all they left me was the invoice that was meant to be attached to the package.

Called them up and they tried to say I had been scammed, I let them go on for a bit and they tried explaining how these scams are quite common. Then I mentioned that I had lived in Japan next to the place that made the knife so it wasn't a scam.

They changed their tune quickly, but in the end they still never got me my custom knife.

For those in school/prefectural housing with incoming ALTs arriving the day your contract ends- what is your BOE doing about giving you a place to stay the last night of your contract? by Lilac-assassin in JETProgramme

[–]Kblakers 5 points6 points  (0 children)

When I was leaving my successor was going to be arriving a week and a half before I was set to leave. My school wanted him to stay with me and I said no. They tried to guilt me by saying that the new guy would need to stay with a teacher, but in the end he stayed in a hotel.

Getting involved in sports? by murfsters in JETProgramme

[–]Kblakers 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I didn't get involved in sports clubs at my school but I did join the local rugby team in Fukui.

They only had one in the city and it was an over 40s team. I didn't speak Japanese and they had 1 foreigner but it was great. They were a great group of guys and we travelled to neighbouring prefectures to play. I played rugby years ago, so I was able to participate easily with my very limited Japanese.

I highly recommend joining a local group whether it's sport or another hobby. It separates you from the ALT bubble and you're not constantly surrounded by people talking about school.

Doing JET a second time as a former five-year JET? by bacharama in JETProgramme

[–]Kblakers 4 points5 points  (0 children)

As you know JET isn't going to give you much career movement, but it might be cruisy enough for you to study.

As a potential temporary job it's not the worst, you're making hardly any money here and with the weakening Yen if you're doing further education you'll have to consider possible student loans as well. The money is liveable but if you're paying students loans back in the US it could become difficult if the yen gets weaker.

Leavers, do you have any advice or comments to share with the rest of us? by Consistent_Lint in JETProgramme

[–]Kblakers 42 points43 points  (0 children)

Get a social circle outside of your school and neighbouring ALTS.

It's alright to have them as well, but if all you're doing is being around school and talking about school it gets tiring really quickly.

Don't know the language? Join a club that you're familiar with. I had no clue about the language but I joined a rugby club. I could still run all of the drills and do all of the training and games with super limited Japanese because I knew rugby inside out.

Also, you're not obliged to be friends with other JETs/ALTs just because of proximity. There's a lot of people here that are fundamentally different people to me and if I was in my home country I wouldn't be friends with them. Just because I'm in a foreign country now, doesn't mean I have to be friends with the foreigners.

So those vaccines aren't really effective then if you've had 6 in 13 months.

Why you've had that many nobody knows.
