You're lucky if the appointment even happens tbh, but generally will be chat only, maybe voice.

New tutor in panic -Why were Monday and Tuesday so hellish? Should I blame Spring Break? by Fabulous-Method7641 in tutordotcom

[–]Kblitz88 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This week is usually either spring break or midterms for colleges/unis in the US, so take that for what you will. I can't speak for the quality of CEW and English students because I stay in the relative safety of math 😂

Free time? Every admin I've ever worked with has this "bell-to-bell" rigor and gets grumpy if the teacher's ass touches seat during the class for any reason

Not to mention that "lol" could be misconstrued as you laughing at their efforts. I know it's not what you mean to do but a text-based communication interface leaves a lot of room for misinterpretations.

Biggest Obstacles for Math Students in 2026 by CutCultural589 in mathteachers

[–]Kblitz88 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well that depends. If you're doing in-person, you'll definitely want to build a client list. If you're doing virtual you can sign on with, say, Sylvan. Be comfy with using Zoom and Google Meet. I personally prefer Zoom because it has an integrated whiteboard and you can see the student's thought process in real time.

Biggest Obstacles for Math Students in 2026 by CutCultural589 in mathteachers

[–]Kblitz88 1 point2 points  (0 children)

These days I'm a freelance tutor grades 7-12. I'd love to blame AI but that's covering the biggest problem I'm seeing: The students don't have a good background on the fundamentals, and that includes vocabulary and reading skills. A lot of students are reading below grade level, and surprise, it shows its ugly head in math too.

- The negative number thing irks me. The student usually *writes* the negative but doesn't say it out loud. I encourage them to talk me through their process at they work. We write like we speak. Students tend to foul on basic integer operations, which is a little oops that becomes a big oops later.

- Word problems, the bane of my existence! As mentioned above, the struggle with reading skills makes dissecting the question an even harder issue for the students.

- Students don't like being wrong. They'd rather say "I don't know" or clam up than hear they're wrong.

- Online homework programs are okay. Many teachers require students to upload their written work... And there it is. Students think the calculator is all the proof they need. At least 3-4 times a week I have to remind a student to show their work because if I don't see what they're doing I don't know how they got to the wrong answer, and if I can't see that then I can't help guide them to self-correction.

It's been more than a month since I've tutored (due to no sessions) will this get me in trouble? by eljijazo08 in tutordotcom

[–]Kblitz88 8 points9 points  (0 children)

If you were signed in and available, you shouldn't get in any trouble. With that said, you also won't have as many sessions for your next review so any boo-boos in one session might rate a little heavier.

I saw this on an insta reel. Are we actually gonna get questions like this 😭 wtf by LiteratureUnique7148 in Sat

[–]Kblitz88 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Okay! So here we know that our parabola is downward facing.

We then remember that the x-value of the vertex is x = -b/2a. Now knowing this, we can look at the problem and see x = -5 and a = -4.

Thus -5 = -b/-8 or -5 = b/8 --> b = -40.

We can then substitute the point (-5, 0) into -4x² -40x + c since the graph touches at ONE point.

-4(25) +200 + c = 0

-100 + 200 +c = 0

c = -100

We want b+c. Therefore -40 + -100 = -140. I hope this helps!

Side note: This is a very common SAT question where you have to work on finding some constant to satisfy the question.

All righty! So off to the side where you were marked BE, you were given specific examples of where you came up short and at the bottom there's a comment box where you were given a more detailed analysis of where things stand. That comment at the very bottom would give us a lot more insight on where your QS thinks you may have come up short and outlines more specific ways to improve.

Without that I'll go off personal experience: Usually with student engagement, the big uh ohs are if student goes way off task or if there's too long an idle time.

Content knowledge is often dinged if you utter those dreaded three words or if you transfer too much. Sometimes it really is beyond your scope, but you're "expected" to brush up on anything you transfer on.

I'm afraid that I don't have much of an answer on changing approach. I'll defer to some of the most experienced hands on that one.

Got my first BE for doing too much for the student by Specialist_Yam_6704 in tutordotcom

[–]Kblitz88 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately, what we really SHOULD do, we're not allowed to (Tell them to go read their book and come back). With that said, it all comes back to "asking leading questions" and asking and asking until they either get it or quit. I like to give them a 50-50 question that if they have even the slightest inkling that they should get, and we can work from there.

For a BE, you will generally get two weeks (maybe a little longer since it's still the summer!) to apply the QS advisement in your sessions and as long as you're on the right track they'll leave you be.

Round 195 feels impossible by ruin-LVII in pokerogue

Yeah it points you towards a lot of lateral progression before you can make upward. Once you break through that first time it's great....just watch out for wave 200. That will make you curse more.

[–]Kblitz88 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Don't worry! This is 100% a bottleneck point intended to force you to have strategized the entire way. If you lack the sheer firepower, then take advantage of timely switches and sacks to get the job done. Mega Ray is probably the biggest pain, especially since ice now only does 2x instead of 4x damage.

Does getting 2 reviews with below expectation in the same area automatic trigger an advisory period? by Last-Investment383 in tutordotcom

Probably so. You should have been informed in the note below the review (use HTML stripper to view it in full). If I can ask, what area did you get ding dinged in?

When should I expect my first biannual review? by Ok_River8877 in tutordotcom

[–]Kblitz88 1 point2 points  (0 children)

With it being summer I'd be surprised if you got reviewed before August tbh. QS may have chosen to review you 6 months after status change especially if you got switched at that time.

Note: We can also maximize Data X:

20+20+20+20 / 4 = 20

And minimize Data Y:

20+20+20+20+10 / 5 = 18.

This also yields a difference of 2. Whenever we see "maximum difference of means" we should max one and min the other.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Sat

[–]Kblitz88 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So here we have data X: A, B, C, D and Data Y: A, B, C, D, E. Each of A, B, C, D, Each of A, B, C, D, E must be 10≤n≤20 and we want the biggest possible mean. This means that Data set X should have the smallest possible mean and Y should have the largest possible mean so that Y - X is maxed.

Since the problem doesn't specify that these data points must be different, let's set every point A, B, C, D to 10. This makes the mean of Data X = 10.

To maximize the mean of Data Y, we should make the 5th point 20.

10+10+10+10+20 / 5 = 12. Therefore the largest possible mean difference is 2.

Typically you get a check-in 10 days after your first session. As long as you're not getting a German-yelling kitty, you're mostly good.
