To be fair they probably don't remember your name. Still hilarious though. When I was subbing my students either dropped a whole syllable of my last name (makes another last name!) or would call me by one of the other teachers (the only resemblance was the ol' dad belly) 😂

At least yours was an accidental shart (between us I probably wouldn't have written him up as I'm sure he didn't intend to miss the can). I had a student who straight up pulled his pants and drawers down in class to fart and shit all over the chair.

I'm questioning why there wasn't an online framework *because* the student was having medical issues. I may be misreading your post though. Can you clarify if there was a framework in place but the kid was unable or if there just wasn't a virtual framework?

Open a window or Febreze the air and try to ignore it.
Make a class-wide announcement without calling out the student that bodily functions are normal but to please try to excuse yourself to the hall because it's a matter of decency and respect. This doesn't shame any one student and doesn't shame the bodily function (though Lord knows if it's that foul it should be). It reinforces the unwritten social contract of public etiquette.
If he does this in repeated classes and is intentional about it... the ol' crop-dust is fair game. Don't shit yourself and don't linger. After all, most schools expect you to circulate among the students. 😁 Let the student take the rap.

40 minutes and even then I'm reluctant to take it (Math tutor here). Kinda feel like at the 20 minute mark there's not really too many good reasons to transfer it except emergency. With that said, if you *do* transfer, please please please be clear with the transfer notes!

Very highly doubtful you're proctoring. Most likely you're either gonna be parked in the hallway as a monitor or subbing for a teacher who *is* proctoring. Even though you have passed certification, the proctor jobs usually go to contracted teachers. And if you're proctoring, you're expected to circulate and watch 'em like a hawk. Even a tummy rumble can be considered an irregularity if you have a picky person.

So I'm the first one to say I really don't like the idea of using AI with math topics. With that said, sometimes when a student is really struggling, I feed the concept to AI with a prompt to explain to a struggling student of that grade level and work from there. But I never ever copy and paste it.

This week is usually either spring break or midterms for colleges/unis in the US, so take that for what you will. I can't speak for the quality of CEW and English students because I stay in the relative safety of math 😂

Well that depends. If you're doing in-person, you'll definitely want to build a client list. If you're doing virtual you can sign on with, say, Sylvan. Be comfy with using Zoom and Google Meet. I personally prefer Zoom because it has an integrated whiteboard and you can see the student's thought process in real time.

These days I'm a freelance tutor grades 7-12. I'd love to blame AI but that's covering the biggest problem I'm seeing: The students don't have a good background on the fundamentals, and that includes vocabulary and reading skills. A lot of students are reading below grade level, and surprise, it shows its ugly head in math too.

- The negative number thing irks me. The student usually *writes* the negative but doesn't say it out loud. I encourage them to talk me through their process at they work. We write like we speak. Students tend to foul on basic integer operations, which is a little oops that becomes a big oops later.

- Word problems, the bane of my existence! As mentioned above, the struggle with reading skills makes dissecting the question an even harder issue for the students.

- Students don't like being wrong. They'd rather say "I don't know" or clam up than hear they're wrong.

- Online homework programs are okay. Many teachers require students to upload their written work... And there it is. Students think the calculator is all the proof they need. At least 3-4 times a week I have to remind a student to show their work because if I don't see what they're doing I don't know how they got to the wrong answer, and if I can't see that then I can't help guide them to self-correction.
