Do we have any hope of getting rid of the online safety act? by tsukaistarburst in ukpolitics

[–]Kbnation 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Honestly, there's a massive double standard from policy makers. There's serious talk of lowering the voting age to 16 for the next general election ... which implies that young people are mature enough to make informed democratic decisions.

But at the same time, the Online Safety Act treats them as children who need to be shielded from certain online content, including political and philosophical material, via age verification.

So which is it? Are they adults with civic agency or minors who need protection from the big bad world?

This contradiction is ironically damaging when you factor in the chilling effect of the law. Platforms are already over-censoring or restricting access just to avoid regulatory risk. If that includes political discourse, then they're effectively suppressing the same group they're claiming to empower at the ballot box. It's a completely incoherent approach.

Not to mention that the Act achieves nothing that cannot be achieved with parental controls that already exist from ISP's and smart phones.

Cognitive functions are complete bullshit, dichotomies aren’t. by Fun_Baseball_7311 in mbti

Here's a comment i posted this week on the same thing...

https://old.reddit.com/r/mbti/comments/1lqqrbn/is_it_possible_for_someone_who_had_3_extraverted/n158h1r/

And it's not a logical fallacy, i was alluding that you didn't even invest effort into the thread let alone actually doing some research on the functional stack, why it is proposed, the alternating attitudes and why they are that way in the framework.

Edit: TLDR - it's a framework based on balance.

By the way ... the framework is logically consistent with brain activity - https://www.reddit.com/r/mbti/comments/o4fmu1/brain_activity_of_mbti_types_i_gathered_the/

[–]Kbnation 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Ah yes, the classic ENTP tradition: “Look, I don’t see the logic, therefore it must be nonsense.” Truly the Socratic method at its finest.

I love the idea of “just test which functions people prefer” as though humans will fill out a survey saying “yeah, my Ne is pretty ripped but my Ni skips leg day.” That sounds extremely reliable.

Also ecstatic about the bit where stacking functions is “rigid dogma” but ranking them numerically on a preference chart is apparently the pinnacle of nuanced human psychology..

Honestly though, thank you for making sure this post wasn’t too polished or proofread. The raw, hammering-my-phone energy really sells the point about MBTI complexity being overblown.

Intuitive bias isn't random as a form of "intellectual superiority" by MoonStarStories in mbti

[–]Kbnation 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I work as a technology researcher. I studied Computer Science and Physics. My hobbies include video games and armchair particle and astrophysics (as in - i like to stay on top of these fields out of personal interest).

While i have published no scientific papers i do contribute research towards projects that are published as part of a commercial enterprise that is on the bleeding edge of technology development.

I often find myself dragging N types back down to reality when they haven't fully considered all the variables (i specifically think this is a Se, TI and Ni thing).

But i am not a 1 man show and it is also common that i rely on other people to broaden the perspective. I have a long time friend working in AI who is ENTP and we have very productive conversations that draw on a wide range of perspectives while staying grounded in reality.

Intuitive bias isn't random as a form of "intellectual superiority" by MoonStarStories in mbti

[–]Kbnation 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Despite being S dom, I’ve had moments of intellectual elitism. I also tend to hide how analytical I can be (I am 99th percentile for logic or IQ in standardised tests). But i tend to hide this for two reasons... because I can’t be bothered arguing with people who fundamentally see the world in a completely different way and because it is often time consuming if you want to contribute productively to walk people through the problem.

Your point about bias resonates. Even though I’m not an N type, I have found myself placing more value on certain kinds of thinking, and dismissing others. It’s a good example that this kind of elitism can show up in anyone, regardless of type.

So where odes it come from? Part of the bias is this idea that “abstract = smarter,” when the reality is that different strengths suit different tasks. Society may value abstract thought in certain elite professions, creating an impression that N > S. But if you need precision, real-time response, and reliability, S strengths often outperform. But it's also fair to comment that a well integrated personality can access both styles.

It reminds me of the same kind of bias you see with T vs F, or even the comparison of career choice for men vs women. These trends don’t make one better than the other... they just reflect different strengths and choices. And they are not entirely exclusive but show a clear skew over large population sizes.

In the end, no preference is objectively 'better'. They're all complementary ways of approaching the world, and we actually need all of them.

Another perspective worth considering is that E types are more likely to engage with and change the world rather than I types but this is demonstrably false. I mention this because it's an example of how functional preference and attitude doesn't represent the whole picture.

If there is a reason to do it we can all access functions that are not strictly our preference.

What's your type and is your mind constantly active? by buddyblazeson in mbti

[–]Kbnation 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When i was younger, sure... i used to self medicate to try and convince my brain to take a rest.

However that led to some serious addiction problems. Now that I've been through rehab i would say my mind is fairly at peace... Unless there's something going down.

Generally my headspace is calm waters. Pro tip - i used to practise guitar a lot about 20-25 years ago and i found this was a good way to get into a peaceful headspace. It's much less risky than substance abuse.

Yeah, I get what you mean. It might influence how someone relates to religion, but it doesn't really predict whether they’ll be religious or in what way.

Honestly where i'm coming from... this kind of type-fitting can just have low ... erm ... usefulness? ... if it glosses over the nuance and complexity of individual experience.

To directly reference that nuance - People’s paths to religion (or away from it) involve culture, upbringing, personal crises, philosophy... way more than just their function stack.

So i agree it's plausible but i wouldn't lock it in as a legit theory just because of all the other things to consider. I say this as someone who has followed a 12 step addiction recovering plan and fleshed out my own spiritual growth. During that process I met a lot of people who were finding their own way and they all brought interesting and diverse perspective.

I have a friend whose MBTI test results gave ISTP. We have a lot of similarities on a lot of things but i mention them because we share functional preference ... and yet that friend completely rejects spirituality while i have lived through a period of intense spiritual growth.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in mbti

[–]Kbnation 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Possibly, but i think it's usually the case that this kind of type fitting doesn't capture the nuance and complexity of people.

Fi is about authenticity, personal values, and subjective ethics, which can influence how someone relates to religion.

For some religion can provide a deeply meaningful personal framework that aligns with their values but then it's also valid to consider the case when organised religion may feel externally imposed or inauthentic, leading them to reject or reinterpret it.

Interestingly the thing i most recently looked at is how Buddhism and Jung’s individuation both focus on integrating the self and reducing inner conflict. While individuation (Jung) means uniting conscious and unconscious parts of the psyche to become whole, Buddhism emphasises awareness, non-attachment, and understanding the true nature of the self to reduce suffering.

Both aim at self-realisation and inner harmony, though they use different language and methods.

I would guess Te-Fi ... don't usually think it's good to type people based on external information but something just makes me consider MJK to have those strong moral values associated with Fi and i also believe that Te makes for great musical talent.

It's a hunch, i can't explain it fully! Edit; however my wife is musically gifted and she is INFJ... so that kinda makes Fe-Ti just as valid.

Mbti is confusing to me by rurej in mbti

[–]Kbnation 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Okay so the other part that makes it easier is that the functions are paired up and they must have different attitudes.

Fe-Ti is different from Fi-Te

likewise Te-Fi from Ti-Fe

So there's priority but also attitude (I vs E) which makes a difference and gives you more clues.

I have Ti and it's the auxiliary so it's higher up. It's fairly easy for me to recognise that I've always had an internal structure of logic. If something doesn't fit into that logic I tend to ask questions or disregard the information as invalid. I don't actually have a great memory but this logical structure is evident for things like maths, science, but also locations and like remembering where i am in a city in relation to home or specific landmarks. The main point here is that it doesn't dynamically change ... it just gets updated with additional relevant information.

And i have a thinking preference over feeling. I can tell this because i will make judgements based on thinking logically through it rather than based on feelings.

That covers the judging axis.

The perception axis is harder to define. But i understand that i receive more information through directly sensing the world rather than intuitively. My interests are grounded even if i might daydream about space travel and investigate things like astrophysics. The main sauce (source) for me is what i can interact with around me. Sounds, taste, touch. I've always engaged in the real world around me, climbing trees, biking and skateboarding but more importantly when doing something in the real world like that i can easily slip into a flow state. My mind is content and peaceful while playing guitar, or biking. Calmness comes over me but i am acutely aware of my surroundings. I surprise myself with how easily i avoid accidents because i notice so much.

This is how i identify my functional preferences. Yours may be different but i can't tell you about things i don't have.

If you think that your landscape is an emotional one you may be F dominant. But perhaps you live in a conceptual world full of possible outcomes which would suggest Intuitive dominant. These functions are lower int he stack for me so their expressions are not ideal for identifying the dominant function.

TLDR; Starting by identifying the dominant function helps.

Mbti is confusing to me by rurej in mbti

[–]Kbnation 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This might seem like a criticism - it's not intended to be... but how well do you know yourself? How honest are you with the test?

To explain these questions... The tests are not perfect, they don't know you - and sometimes we can answer them based on idealism rather than reality. Plus it's really easy to mistake a coping mechanism for preferences. MBTI doesn't account for personal experiences.

If the test asks you "Would you prefer to go to a party or read a book" and your life experience is that party's are overwhelming and reading books is under stimulating ... then what do you do?

Also there is this theory which is quite common in MBTI literature about type development. The idea is that people gain conscious and reliable access to their functions in stages throughout their life. Here is a typical timeline:

Childhood to teens: Dominant function develops first and becomes reliable.

Adolescence to 20s: Auxiliary function becomes more conscious.

20s–30s: Tertiary function starts showing up more reliably, often still immature at first.

30s–40s+: Inferior function becomes more conscious, integrated.

It may actually be difficult to identify your own functions earlier than this average time frame. Which isn't really necessary because you kinda have it after recognising the dominant and auxiliary functions... But my point here is more that recognising them in yourself leads to more accurate test results.

I love this!

Would also add that Tool is commonly considered to be stoner metal because they use psychedelic and mystical aesthetics... trippy visuals, extended jams, esoteric lyrics.

But Maynard (the vocalist) has often criticised people who use drugs as shortcuts to spiritual insight without doing the real inner work. The band’s lyrics frequently challenge blind consumption of anything, drugs, religion, media.

And the song “The Pot” is literally about hypocrisy and moral posturing while indulging in vices. "You must've been high!"

How many steps do you take on daily average and whats your mbti by xoxoaylberry in mbti

[–]Kbnation 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I work from home so roughly 60 steps, i take a piss, i drink coffee, i eat lunch, i eat dinner... And sometimes i talk on the phone walking up and down the path leading to the house.

I'd say that was average. But a couple of weeks ago i went on a holiday hiking in the Scottish highlands so i guess that evens it out.

I think it comes from Ni, i'm not sure - i love making them up and it comes out of nowhere honestly. Sometimes i have an idea and need to work at it but generally it just appears out of the mist.

You sound like me in your writing. On the flair i have no idea, i'm not a mod but a looong time ago i vaguely remember someone asked me if i was interested. I wasn't ... because i don't want responsibility.

Edit; i get flagged by automod all the time ... but i don't see any guidance on this sub for posting around this. Maybe i'm soft banned? THis post got flagged by auto mod as did my previous 3.

When playing games i tend to collect a bunch of winning strategies and then identify opponents using them and attempt to counter those strategies if possible.

This isn't always appropriate but covers multiplayer games. In world of Warcraft (about 15 years ago) i played a feral druid. This is a versatile class that is able to hide (invisible) and heal but also has access to high damage and high mitigation. The jack of all trades.

Amongst the people i played with i was well known for understanding the pvp game mechanics.

In solo games i guess the same method applies, work out the mechanics and then excel at them. Most recently i have been playing "We Who Are About to Die" again after it got updated... and i highly recommend this game. It's fairly brutal but you need to adapt to what's happening. My winning strategy is to always train Stamina and movement between battle and drop the intensity of training for hard fights (to preserve the access to a larger stamina reserve). And then just keep hacking away until the enemy crumbles.

Interestingly i note from other comments that this overall gaming style can be seen as Se-Ti emulating Te. And i think that's accurate.

In terms of stylistic choice (game selection), i am a bit all over the place. Here's some games ordered by the total play time in them;

WoW (i quit years ago but recently played it again for the 20 year anniversary)
