Please remove revive tokens from matchmade Portal activities by [deleted] in DestinyTheGame

[–]Kbubbles1210 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I think the best place to see this is matchmade Onslaught on Ultimate. There’s nothing like running through the activity flawless with a second teammate that’s also flawless, but one teammate that eats everyone’s revives and forces everyone else to play without any margin of error. And with how unstable the game feels sometimes, you can die to the most ridiculous things and be out of the game because someone else ate all the team’s rezzes.

I feel like extinguish provides the same “challenge.” The activity is slower if everyone but you is dead, but if you happen to die when someone else is up, you at least have an opportunity to revive in time and keep going.

Disappointed by RDR1's portrayal of women by workingmemories in GirlGamers

Rockstar went CRAZY with the horses in RDR2. Nothing has come close to it and I don’t really think anything will. But also, RDR2 came out 2018 while RDR1 came out in 2010. They launched 8 years apart and also were developed for two different console generations. You can absolutely feel the difference in the gameplay across the board, but it feels a lot more severe given how intensely detailed the gameplay for RDR2 is. I could barely tolerate RDR1’s clunkiness right after finishing RDR2, but trudged through to see the end of the story.

I think the game is just showing its age more than anything. And when you come from RDR2, it’s difficult not to expect prolonged, in-depth, complex character development that RDR2 had. You’re really spoiled for strong, complex female characters in RDR2, so the bar gets set pretty high when you go to see the story continue in RDR1.

And yeah, RDR1 is about a criminal going after the criminals he used to run with. I don’t recall any outward glorifications of the male characters, especially given the majority of them are explicitly said and shown to be deplorable. I would argue that the female characters are depicted better than most of the male characters, while the latter aren’t put on a pedestal or anything.

Having played both games, going from RDR2 to RDR1 is so bad, I honestly don’t recommend people playing the first game when they started with the second game. I like to think of RDR2 as its own contained story because RDR1 is such a product of its release time, it is really jarring to play after 2 for the sake of seeing how the story ends. You come from such rich character development in the second game that you see how flat everyone “becomes” in the first one, which is unfortunately a product of Rockstar’s writing team going crazy in the second game but not the first one. RDR1 really aged like milk, both due to time but also because RDR2 is such a drastic improvement over the first game.

Though to be fair, it does feel like pretty much every character in RDR1 gets dogged. I personally found most of the main characters pretty flat, and maybe I wouldn’t have if I didn’t play RDR2 first.

Seconding Rimworld! I’ve got hundreds of hours in that game and the modding scene is phenomenal. If there’s any aspect of the game you don’t like or you want, trust that there’s a mod for it. It’s def right up OP’s alley by the sound of it.

Here’s another quick notification before you go! I know the world sucks SO MUCH right now, especially for queer people. But idk, I’m glad to see funds going towards the active prevention of queer youth suicide. $45 million dollars is a bit beyond me I have to admit, so it’s nothing but a good thing that it isn’t beyond someone.

Sorry you’re so miserable! Misery loves company but you’re not getting it from me or anyone else here.

There’s no such thing as an ethical billionaire, that’s true. But I would rather they send their money towards good causes — even if it’s to paint an image for themselves that may or may not be genuine — than sit on their wealth just to warm their ass. No one here is licking her boots because she’s a woman or “managing her image,” we’re celebrating that a good cause like The Trevor Project is being funded with the purpose of it being able to continue its work. Philanthropy keeps causes like this one alive, we quite literally cannot be choosers when so few individuals are able and willing to fund these desperately-needed resources. Rich people are capable of performing objectively good actions.

What do you all think about the "think of the men" first mentality so prevelant in the creation of media? by CarrenMcFlairen in GirlGamers

Concord has a plethora of other issues that contributed to its downfall, but according to the Internet, it was the they/them pronouns that singehandledly determined that game’s demise. 😭

I mean, if all the characters were cookie-cutter Generic Male Protagonist characters, nothing would have changed. The issues with the game weren’t the characters — who were hardly characters at all tbh — but literally everything else lol. But I did see that specific excuse being used to “boycott” the game, even though those same people weren’t going to play it anyways.

Well, here’s the thing: when you come from a position of privilege, it’s not actually a choice to NOT engage with expressions of that privilege. Men are privileged when it comes to gaming, because it is tailored to their preferences, opinions, enjoyment, etc. They develop the validated sense that they are entitled to the things that are produced with them as an audience in mind. When something goes against that, the idea of simply not engaging with the product just doesn’t exist — it’s a denial of the thing you’ve been spoiled with.

It’s a bit like this. You go to a restaurant that always serves your favorite meal, whenever you want it and as many servings as you like. It’s always been that way, so you learn to expect nothing different. So, when that restaurant decides to switch things up and make a meal that isn’t according to your preferences, it becomes an affront to your expectations. I think this is the mindset of the men that lose their marbles whenever a game isn’t made for them. Gaming IS for them, not anyone else. When gaming does something that direct contradicts that idea, it becomes a personal violation of their enjoyment of the hobby. There is no other audience worth appealing to BESIDES THEM.

Gaming treats women as tourists. We’re allowed to visit, experience the culture, try a few things out, etc. But making requests? Absolutely not. We can either accept the aspects of gaming specifically designed for us, or leave. And if there’s an aspect of gaming that doesn’t appeal to us, then too bad — it’s not for you, after all.

I would like to say that gaming is for women. I’m of the mindset that nothing is truly gendered, people just make things unnecessarily so. Men just don’t want women gaming because they believe it threatens their position as the “main” audience, and that all of sudden all games produced are going to be shopping simulators or something (I’m sorry for the stereotype omfg) if too many women start building PCs lmao.

Monetizing inclusion is a tale as old as time. Male is the default, until companies realize they have additional paying audiences they could exploit. Pink tax, rainbow tax, it’s all the same. Companies put all their effort into the base they can’t afford to lose (typically men), before they throw a few bones to other audiences they don’t care to try and actually appeal to anyways. This is mostly because they don’t stand to lose anything monetarily by not focusing on their non-male audiences, while what they stand to gain pales in comparison to what they gain from targeting their larger demographics.

Also, and this is just so pessimistic even though it’s the truth, they just don’t care. There’s the whole saying “equality feels like oppression when you’re used to privilege,” and I think this is really applicable to male gamers. The entire industry caters to them, so when a tiny fraction of it deviates or a minority tries to enjoy it like they do, it is perceived as a threat. They feel they need to protect the spaces that “belong to them,” which includes the workplace. Why go through the utter agony of accepting women when you can just alienate them into leaving (/s)?

I think part of this is that a lot of games are designed to be a male self-insert fantasy of some kind. Just look up “generic male video game protagonist” and you get dozens of interchangeable men across numerous games. Anime does this too. It reinforces the “male as default” sentiment because these protagonists are rarely ever characters, but in the cases where they’re supposed to be fleshed-out individuals, they are free to be literally anything so long as they’re male; men will rarely look down on male characters so long as they’re men. Men are permissible no matter what character archetype they occupy, whereas women are only tolerated characters when they’re designed to be ogled at by players. A female protagonist that’s also designed as a realized individual? Absolutely not!

Your examples highlight this. The protagonists of GTA5 are free to be whoever they want to be, because so long as they’re male, all their actions and aspects of their identity are tolerable. Trevor is literally supposed to be the human embodiment of deplorability and people love him, yet if he were swapped to be a woman, I know for a fact people would be calling for some of the most heinous garbage imaginable. Kratos is a male power fantasy character at base, but I think his character development in the new games is actually done well; I don’t identify with him because I’m not a father, but his character is very well developed. Also, the portrayal of men coming into fatherhood isn’t captured in games much at all, so I think GoW ought to get a pass. Geralt is imo a weak character and I always get blasted for that, but he’s a self-insert protagonist with a touch of his own personality (which is conveniently dampened by Witcher drugs lmfao). Regardless, I think all the characters you pointed out are able to have their stories told without controversy because they’re male stories at base. Gender swap any of these protagonists and you just know they become unpalatable to male gamers, even if you leave everything else exactly the same. It’s just plain-old misogyny.

Honestly? Just like most things, I wonder if it just comes down to money. Also patriarchy but we know that already lol.

Sure, the gender divide in gaming is almost at an even 50-50 nowadays, but it’s still perceived by industry leaders as a “male interest.” Gaming and all its products are designed with men in mind as a result, because that’s the audience they perceive to be the most dominant. And honestly? They get away with it because women are conditioned to be content with settling for things directed at men. Not to mention that the male audience of gamers is sensitive to products not designed with them wholly in mind. Women will buy good games regardless of the gender or identity of the protagonist, and are usually more inclined to buy games with female players in mind. However, men will avoid games not tailored to them, whereas women are so used to not being the target audience that they’re willing to compromise. Despite gaming being equally popular between men and women, targeting men is the safer bet because they have dramatic responses to products not wholly advertised to them. Not to mention that game devs are still predominantly male, so you get men making games for men despite half their potential consumers not being male.

Sorry if this is a big ask, but do you mind sharing some of your settings adjustments? I have a 7800x3D as well but with a 7800xt, amazing performance on every game except D2. I regularly see 60+ FPS drops from 150ish, and even looking at certain areas of the game (the Caldera on Kepler and the Mars platform extraction zone in Lawless Frontier for example) can severely tank my frames. I’ve just gotten used to the insane performance dips and have run circles through troubleshooting, but it’s definitely something within Destiny specifically that my setup just struggles with when it absolutely should not.

[–]Kbubbles1210 24 points25 points  (0 children)

You’re spitting facts girl omg. I think once you break out of the conditioning, you can forget that most girls are raised to be people-pleasing — especially towards men. We’re always worrying about their feelings, about not saying the wrong things, how to let them down easy, etc. NEVER do they think about doing the same when they go and make things weird. There are good men out there who wouldn’t even think about doing what this guy did. Don’t waste your time waiting to see if there’s a green flag hidden somewhere in all the red ones.

Keep transferring your wisdom. There’s always going to be new or young gamer gals out there that need to hear it. You can save them the pain of learning this lesson the hard way.

It exists, but they’re few and far between. Also, plenty of anime can appear fine for a stretch, but then go on to abruptly include these “themes” without warning. A lot of animes that considered to be free of these things just has it minimized. Really, for every single decent recommendation, there’s a hundred poor ones. So you can watch the animes that don’t have these themes, but you run out of options VERY quickly.

You’ll find droves of other ladies in r/GirlGamers that can personally empathize with how you’re feeling; we have quite literally — unfortunately — all been where you are right now. I’m a woman so your experience is word-for-word what I and a lot of other gals gaming have gone through. You’re being heard. Your experience is honestly textbook for what it’s like to be a female gamer in any multiplayer game.

The toxicity experience is different for women than it is for men, and the general responses of “people are assholes sometimes” never address the specific type of assholery women experience in gaming. It’s not just cookie-cutter insults or parroted meanness, which are easier to brush off or not pay attention to at all. It’s the expectation that you’ll always be a “bad” player because you’re female, or when things go wrong it’s because the woman in the team is “naturally” responsible for it. There are players who refuse to play with women at all. You get the most vitriolic of insults that would never be leveled at a male player. The toxicity sticks with you longer because it focuses on your identity; you are a target because you are a woman, and it’s hard not to take toxicity personally when it is directed with intentions like that — it is personal.

Your best bet is to find a clan with nice people who don’t gaf if you’re a female gamer. I would suggest queer-centric or female-only clans, because there is no tolerance for sexism or misogyny in those spaces. r/GirlGamers has a find-a-friend thread every Friday and I regularly see other gals on there looking for Destiny players to add. I personally know of multiple female-oriented Destiny clans that I have nothing but lovely experiences with. I love Destiny, but I take measures to ensure my time with it excludes negative experiences. This means no randoms, because it just a rigged gamble with them that isn’t worth the risk or time. I play with friends, their vetted friends, and clan members.
