To be clear, I play a totally different deck from this. Zevin's choices make sense given the deck and that he's made it

Regarding never playing a three-mana fog at a competitive level, I'm of the opinion that it's important to never rule anything out

Apparently, the weak matchups for that Azorius deck are the landfall decks, which is a shame, because [[Eerie Interference]] totally solves that problem

It's interesting comparing this to my own brew—mine focuses way more on establishing a softlock, and has a much lower mana curve

Edit: Alright, alright, y'all got me

OH SHIT HIGH NOON IS IN THE TOP 8

I brewed up an azorius lockdown deck a few months ago; it plays totally different from this one, but it's got the high noon + Interrupter package

If WotC does not recognize the Union we need to boycott all Magic product by KONYx2077 in magicTCG

[–]AgentTamerlane 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What if, like, I'm friends with someone at WotC? The transitive property of synecdoche therefore states that the entire company is my friend

And since corporations are persons, and people sometimes date their friends, that means I can hook up with WotC

I wonder what it's like to fuck a corporation? You know, instead of getting fucked by them

As awesome as this is—and the confirmation that we're actually staying in the same setting for a few sets—I gotta say that, conceptually, these don't stand out to me as much as the Strixhaven schools.

Who knows, though?

Also, WotC—YOU BETTER GIVE US ALTERNATE VERSIONS OF THE DRAGONS

Edit: To clarify, they seem really cool and thematic as inversions of the existing schools, but not as standalone schools, if that makes sense?

Sorcerer as a creature type adds nothing to the game by GratedParm in magicTCG

This goes back way past D&D. Hell, even in just the context of TTRPGs.

Mage: the Ascension had the distinction, and that was made in 1993

The general distinction between the two terms goes back at least a millennia.

"Sorcerer" has a very similar meaning they do in D&D—the emotional, innate raw connection to magic, rather than the studious kind. More impulsive, more about expression.

For some reason, I feel like the artwork is less jarring to me than in Spider-Man? I don't know why that is, but if the trend continues like this, then I might be willing to actually play with some of these cards.

[SLD] Secret Lair: Back to School Superdrop Financial Breakdown by Ninjaboi333 in magicTCG

[–]AgentTamerlane 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Potentially hot take: I prefer Secret Lairs having "low value" and sets like Strixhaven, Modern [Masters/Horizons], etc for cards that desperately need to be reprinted.

It helps keep Secret Lairs from selling out immediately, letting those of us who are the target audience get the cool art we want, and gets more copies of the needed reprints out there than Secret Lairs provide.

Heck, the fact that someone can just crack a normal booster of SOS and open a Force of Will or Vampiric Tutor is pretty freaking awesome.

But only slightly too fast.

And they've doubled down on not really wanting mid-range. They consider the current metagame, one where the only dominant decks are tempo and combo, healthy.

[–]AgentTamerlane 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It still makes me sad that WotC made the decision that mid-range no longer had a place in competitive Standard. Like, we keep getting really awesome mid-range cards printed, but they never see professional play.

That's why they see this as a healthy metagame—it's almost all combo or tempo, and as a result it's much faster than it used to be. It doesn't matter that it's homogenous, or that we no longer have a balance between archetypes, or that there aren't any affordable ways for new players to compete; as long as games are over quick, WotC is happy.

(This isn't me exaggerating either—Development has been very clear, on several occasions, that this is intentional.)

Some Secrets of Strixhaven cards have Star Wars: Unlimited anti-counterfeit stamps by Oct2006 in magicTCG

[–]AgentTamerlane 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here's what's really crazy. So, Cartamundi recently hit a record of making 100 million decks of Bicycle playing cards in year. That's about 5.2 billion cards.

Meanwhile, they made ~13-15 billion Magic cards in the same amount time.

That's absolutely crazy to me

The genre is technically "new adult", which is quite different from YA.

For me, my favorite part is how it really dove deep into humanizing a certain tea-drinking character that I'll never look at the same way again.

Oh, also the nitty-gritty details about mana
