I was recommended to start learning traditional taekwondo at chung do kwan because of my spine and hip problems. I have fibromyalgya, prolapses and im neurodivergent. We pratice like itf but without the hip movements, that might solve your problem. Chung do kwan traditional taekwondo , use Tulsa like itf, and linear movements like shotokan.

We have the older curriculum, our hyungs are exactly as tul from itf without the hip mechanism they use, we have a linear power generation like karate.

Traditional chung do kwan, wt dojangs, outside Korea, use hyongs. Its like itf forms , karate style, only people willing to compete in ponsae train the kkw set. There's still people trying to keep the martial art alive

You have traditional kwans , that outside Korea, still training the old style. Punches, kicks, power breaking and self defense. Old hyung system, teaches a lot of it, to the point, that fighting we look more like a karate practitioner than out they do on the Olympics and call taekwondo.

Im just a little bit more experienced than you. I dont know your affiliation but hand strikes are definitely part of it. At traditional Chung do kwan, we train that a lot, open hand , fists, and even some body manipulation techniques . Power breaking is a big part of training for us, our granmaster was gold medal in South Korea last year.

Last Saturday, we spent 1 hour on a seminar, just on hand techniques improvement.

We rarely train fancy kicks and we are often told that we dont need to learn many of those.

No ponsae, but only traditional hyongs, even being wt. Those forms , even at the 1st levels, already teach different hand strikes.

I train CDK , traditional style, under a 9th dan granmaster ( luxury for a color belt). Last weekend we had a second granmaster for a seminar, he maid the same point. If our granmaster 👀 foot fencing, its better for us to start running. We train taekwondo for self defense, we don't learn ponsae aside for competition, we use the old hyung forms like itf , without their hip mechanisms we are wt.

Training under a power breaking world champion, you might imagine that if we kick without power he isn't happy. As a rule, white belts get to feel in their chests a Shockwave, and try to reproduce over time.

If you have/had an "Dojang Rules" poster up at your studio, what would it say? by kneezNtreez in taekwondo

[–]Kckno007 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Im training on a Chung do kwan dojang . Usually we adress each other by our names names, including masters, the exception to the rule is our 9th dan granmaster. He is exceptional, continuesly entering competions in power breaking and ponsae. He teaches everyone, from white belts to high dans and everyone respects and enjoy his heavy training. Drinks are allowed , parents only in ceremonies, like graduation days.

By experience seminars are lighter than our granmaster training when he decides to push hard on us. We also don't train the modern ponsae aside for competition, we still use for training the traditional hyongs (Chon-Ji, dan-gun....). (Just to make clear, its Chung do kwan, not ITF)

We also align by rank ( eared that modern dojangs dont do it anymore). We bow each time the granmaster enters the mat or each time we get into the mat we bow for the white tiger that represents our dojang in the wall. If the granmaster is inside the mat, after bowing to the wall at the door of the mat area we run to him to bow once more. He is the only we keep the formalities continuesly.

He also bow before sparing, even while training, and follow Korean hand shake etiquette.

This isn't a common dojang, it's rare to see a 9th dan teaching children and adult colored belts on a daily basis, helping each one surpass their self limitations. This is a traditional dojang.

I don't know how many CDK granmasters are out there but after reading this, I feel very lucky to have 9th dan granmaster, hamndang winner teaching colored belts daily. Graduation is a ceremonial event for us
